Actually original name of this penalty in my country (Czech Republic) is "vršovický dloubák". Because Panenka was playing for Bohemians in "Vršovice area of Prague" .... "dloubák" is basically that soft picking up of the ball during the technical kick. So here we are..... "vršovický dloubák" in the Czech Republic. For the rest of the world just "Panenka". And it is maybe better, because everybody knows Panenka and it is easier to call it like that. :))
Panenka was not only famous for his penalties, he was also the best free kicker in history. He even scored a direct Corner during his time in Austria.

I just learnt that more players on that team were from Slovakia and less from Czechia. But the records are given to Czechia after the breakup of Czechoslovakia
@Stepanvanek966

The credits should be and actually are same for both. One country one trophy. For example in other tournaments where Czechoslovakia was succesful (1934, 1962 WC final or others) mostly there were more players originated from Czech part. The reason why someone might feel like credits from Czechoslovakia (in overall, we still have the flag for ex.) was shifted on Czech republic is that Czechs were leading the Independence movement and were most industrialized and developed from the new country. Slovaks were too small and political weak to have their own independence already in 1918. But it is complicated history and I think the realtionship is very good now between us.

It was interesting to hear in the video, that in this 1976 team the relationship between the Czech and Slovakian players was very good, what was unusual. He said it, because - not only in football - the Czechs usually considered Slovakian as inferior to them. That's why Czechoslovakia divided at the end to Czech and Slovakia. But this 1976 win should go equally to both nations.

Keep in mind that the key players on that Euro-winning team, Zdenek Nehoda, Panenka himself and Ivo Viktor are Czechs, for what it's worth. Viktor ended up as #3 in that year's Ballon d'Or.

Sometimes teams that win a trophy get overconfident in the qualifying campaign for the next major tournament. Maybe that's what happened
Antonín Panenka- Immortal
The crazy thing is that actually not Panenka but the Slovak players won the tournament. They were the majority of the team and scored almost all of the goals. Panenka scored this genius penalty and deserves credit for this, but not more. Now, this championship title counts for the checks, not for Slovaks. The Czechs have always managed to take credit for successful things that happened in Czechoslovakia, the Slovak were responsible for the failures. There are several other examples in sports for this, like the three world championships in ice hockey in the 70s thanks to the Stastny brothers, who were Slovak. The Czechs also managed to steal the common Czechoslovak flag and use it today as their own. But the original check flag looks like the Polish one, with the Czech lion on it. This shows that the Czechs are very inventive and courageous and cross sometimes the borders. In sports it’s genius, in real life it is sometimes annoying. Panenka himself, however, remained always a fair man.
,,taking place behind the iron curtain, in Yugoslavia'' - wow, how wrong is this statement, Yugoslavia was definitely not behind the iron curtain
Panenka effectively ended the German dominence of the early-mid 70s, at club and international level. Bayern didn't win another European Cup until the 90s, and Germany had to wait until 1990 to win the World Cup at the third time of asking.

Working 30 years in a mine? Story does not have to be real, but has to be entertaining, yes? The only punishment Paneka would get have he misses, is by himself as he would look like a fool. And his fellow players would comfort him as they knew how he would be feeling.
The worst and the most dangerous technique ever, especially in very important games. I still remember that World Cup final in 2006 between France and Italy when Zidane - my favourite footballer - barely could make it when he decided to use Panenka and almost missed.
Yeah, but did he head-butt someone in the sternum afterward? I don't think so! :D

Can we stop calling any football move after someone who did it. This guy taking a penalty kick in an unusual way is kind of acceptable, but my young son called a pass with the outside of the foot as a “ trevella” (I think). I don’t know who that is, but I bet he wasn’t the first person to use the outside of the foot.
@arthur8042
11 күн бұрын
trivela isnt a name, it is just the name of the kick in portuguese that got famous worldwide.
People should stop calling this thing Panenka it's called an umbrella shot, it has always been called this in Southern Europe decades before Antonin Panenka showed up, it's been done in rural football teams for decades including including attempt it on penalties. He was just the first to do it on a European Level match.
After all that build up, they barely show anything of the actual kick ? What a stupid documentary
Poorly made documentary.
That last part about Panenka working in the mines sounds like a stereotypical image of an Eastern Bloc country from James Bond. Indeed, there was no political freedom but if you weren't into politics the life in Czechoslovakia was actually quite enjoyable and socially secure. There was no cut-throat capitalist mentality. Athletes were treated like celebrities just like today, except they were paid less. Also, Yugoslavia was never behind the Iron Curtain, they even went to war with Stalin. It's also not correct to describe this European title as a Czech win because most players on that team were Slovaks. Either give credit to both nations or simply use the adjective "Czechoslovakian" instead of "Czech".
Harry Kane, are you listening ?😆
