Actually by 2014, there were 1,864 wild giant pandas(excluding young cub), but this number did not include the number of captive giant pandas. Captive giant panda population was 442 by 2015. Therefore by 2015, the total number of panda was around 1,864 + 442= 2,306 pandas at least. Note: "World Wildlife Fund" is only concern with the number of wild animal population, it will not consider the number of captive population of the animal concern in their reports. Here WWF's Extinction Risk Category (from lowest to highest): LEAST CONCERN - Does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, or Near Threatened. NEAR THREATENED - Likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future. VULNERABLE - Facing a high risk of extinction in the Wild. ENDANGERED - Facing a even higher risk of extinction in the Wild. CRITICALLY ENDANGERED - Facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the Wild. EXTINCT IN THE WILD - Known only to survive in cultivation, in captivity or as a naturalised population. EXTINCT - No reasonable doubt that the last individual has died. At this moment, panda is under "VULNERABLE" category i.e. facing a high risk of extinction in the Wild, and therefore there is still a lot of work to be done for Giant Panda.
