Panda School: (EXCLUSIVE) How the National Zoo Trains Its Panda Cub | National Geographic

Ойын-сауық

What motivates a young giant panda? Food, of course! And that's what the zookeepers at the Smithsonian's National Zoo use to reward Bei Bei the panda cub as he completes training tasks. Bei Bei, born on August 22, 2015, isn't quite old enough to eat bamboo like his older sister, Bao Bao, and parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, but he sure loves sweet potatoes (and has recently acquired a taste for apples). In this exclusive behind-the-scenes look, see how and why zookeepers are training Bei Bei.

Early childhood education helps the brain development of all mammals - Bei Bei has heartily proven that!! e.g. His mommy Mei Xiang took him up & down the mountain structure at an age way before she did with his earlier siblings, & he learned to climb & take difficult leaps on that mountain much sooner than they did !! Thank you very much for sharing this video!

If they do not train them, every procedure and exam no matter how minor will require a sedation and sedations come with risks. They are training the pandas to do things like sticking their arm out so they can collect blood sample and run tests without having to resort to sedation. They are not doing this just to make them "more human".

So many animal experts in the comments here, Jesus... The zoo isn't doing anything wrong. The pandas here are never going to be released into the wild, which is why they're socialized with humans- Why would a zoo want wild, unfriendly pandas which are more likely to get stressed when they can let the pandas learn their zookeeper's are friends? These pandas also aren't being trained to do "tricks" like people are whining about. These are actually vitally important to their health, as stated in the video. Training a panda to give his paw through the fence allows for blood to be drawn. Standing, putting paws on the fence, etc. is for physical exams. When you train a zoo animal to do these things, it allows the veterinarian to give a physical exam without tranquilizing or putting the animal under anesthesia, which are dangerous. The China program is great, but it isn't better. They're both great. The National Zoo pandas will never be released into the wild therefore the methods of husbandry are different! The National Zoo produces panda cubs with selective breeding for the best, strongest genetics. These cubs will he sent to China for THEIR breeding program, and then their cubs will he released. :)
