I hope Panasonic release a 40mm f2 or f2.8 pancake, similar to their very popular 20mm f1.7 pancake on MFT. If this camera released with a 28mm f2.8 and a 40mm f2 pancake, it would have been a lot more compelling for photography.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make such a detailed comparison, highly appreciated. Despite of the overwhelming amount of negative comments that I read about the S9, Panasonic is aiming for a very defined market and combine as much as they can include in such a small volume. I agree with you; both cameras are good and it's all about defining everyone needs.

Assuming this Camera delivers on what it is intended to for it's Target Market, it might be the most Underrated Camera of the year. Far too many folks are looking at it in the context of what they want in a Camera as opposed to what the Target Market might want or need. That is the Huge issue with most of those complaining. Hi. Love your reviews and insights. Subscribed to your channel. I have a question for you. I’m intrigued by the S9 and have placed a preorder. My use case is as a second camera for times when I want to go light but still have the full frame benefits. I’m a Zf user with only two lenses. I like the Zf but don’t want to fund 2 different brands. So I’m thinking about the S5ii to replace my Zf and pair with the S9. What do you feel I would lose moving from the Zf to the S5ii? Thank you in advance. And thanks for the great videos.

I was thinking a lot about buying x-h2s or panasonic s5iix. first one just because a love fuji sims and already have a set of lenses, other one is because of ibis + af + video. but now it's complicated, s9 ticks almost all boxes for me except mechanical shutter. how is rolling shutter in s9? is it noticeable when panning and trying to capture some running dogs around, or kids, or wife sometimes? because 15 minutes of recording limit is not that bad to be honest, and maybe they will push that limit forward, like half an hour, will be perfect for me. From the beginning I through that this was a logical comparison to make because of their price and style, I am shocked that your video is the first I am seeing comparing the two. For me, being a photography enthusiast is also being a lens enthusiast, making the Panasonic the logical choice. I own and use the 50mm f1.8 you were using, and like it, but for this camera I think it would be fun to get some compact fast Chinese lenses or vintage lenses. Pergear 35mm 1.4 is very affordable and compact for its specs. TTartisans 50mm f2 is also very compact and very affordable. I own a very similar in size camera the Sigma FPL, it has a superior 60mp full frame sensor, but I am very jealous of the incredible internal stability of the S9. I can definitely see myself getting one in the future to have a second body for hand held video. Much easier to bring that than my gimbal or tripod.

Part of it is that people aren't comparing these two because it's really more of an apples to oranges comparison in reality. Since Fuji doesn't have a FF line, comparing anything to it (that isn't APSC) does make for some variables (and since Panasonic doesn't have APSC, well, that makes things a bit harder). Really, a comparison to say a Ricoh Gr vs X100VI would have made a bit more sense I guess.

For instance, I think it can become a good scout camera. Light and compact, plus you can quickly test and iterate different looks for the finished work. Interesting! Thank you for another great video, love it. Shooting MFT and S5ii in artificial lights, I go always in mechanical shutter mode as I had pretty often bending issues with the electronically one. But having this option I did not try to figure out in detail when exactly bending comes up. Make sense that with longer exposures above 1/100 it will be reduced. But for a camera like this I’d prefer to have an easy to use tool and that would be a mechanical shutter by default. I would not use such a small camera for high burst rate shots anyway. So S9 to me is much more a video cam with good photo options, able to deliver high FF quality but in limited scenarios. Not to mention that this all depends on suitable lens options which are missing. To me the 1.8 Panas look to big on this cam. I’ll keep waiting for a GX8/GX9 successor even though a “poor man’s” Q3 alternative would also be pretty compelling.

The way I see it, I think Panasonic and Olympus's biggest problem is that mft cameras have gotten so large (such as the OM5) that it's about the same size as an APSC camera, and the cost is getting to be about the same, so many people are getting the APSC cameras instead because there is no real "loss" in doing so but they can benefit from the larger sensor and higher resolutions. That's where I think panasonic and Olympus are missing out and losing (20MP is fine on m4/3 but they're running up against a wall, just like how APSC and FF are with resolutions around 40 MP and 60MP respectively, but most people consider 20MP to be low resolution as well, which that can be debated depending on the us). But at the same time the 20MP limitation will limit what Panasonic can do with the m4/3 in terms of video, which was one of their big strengths with the GH series.

I totally agree the S9 has some impressive abilities for such a small full frame package, but they did opt for a bigger battery over a mechanical shutter specifically, and I can imagine, most would have been fine with carrying several smaller batteries around with them and still been able to use a mechanical shutter. Especially considering you can't record for more than 10 mins at a time anyways. So what use is having a bigger battery right?

Uncropped 60fps and barely cropped 120fps is the reason why and low light capability combined with best autofocus on any camera. The photos are pretty decent too. This comparison video is really well made and detailed UNTIL you start really paying attention: 1. At 7:49 you talk about the S9 not having a mechanical shutter, which is HUGE for things like Action shots, Night life shooting and the biggest one FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY, but you spent a total of 30 seconds stating that making excuse for the S9 saying the the "average S9 user" won't need to shoot at over 1/100 with artificial light. Ignoring that there are TONS of situations where you need to use those settings, you state that this is an IN DEPTH COMPARISON! You can't just gloss over certain features because you think its not necessary. And you forgoing the Fuji X100VIs greatest feature which is its Leaf Shutter makes this comparison a bit biased IMO. 2. At 13:47 You're making another excuse for the S9 when it comes to record limits vs X100VI's UNLIMITED VIDEO RECORDING stating "Most people probably don't shoot longer clips than that" AGAIN ignoring the fact that if you want to do Livestreaming, podcasts, sit down interviews, talking heads (Which lots of social mediaites use) or the plethora of things you need long unrestricted recording, so for you to spend only 16seconds talking aboug this HUGE Panasonic Downside is a little suspicious. You also never stated it's only 10minutes in 6k and 20minutes in 1080p! When it comes to Panasonic Cons you gloss over them, only talking about then for mere seconds making excuses for them but when it comes to a Clear Fujifilm Strength it is downplayed or never brought up. 3. At 14:29 you make another excuse for the S9 stating that it doesn't have a joystick but the S9 makes up for it by having a REALLY GOOD touchscreen, the X100VI also has a REALLY GOOD touchscreen which makes it weird that you mention this about the S9 in an IN DEPTH COMPARISON. Like why is it everytime Panasonic doesn't have something you make an excuse for it? 4. At 16:00 you talk about about one of the X100VI's BEST FEATURE its Hybrid OVF/EVF honestly TOP 5 best implementations on any camera on the market, you praise it and rightfully so. But UGH, you then went ahead and starting making excuses for the S9 which has no EVF to speak of. You state that you are personally fine with the space saving with no EVF (Which again it's an In DEPTH COMPARISON so it's weird to state that) and that it is a GOOD DECISION that Panasonic left out the EVF?!?!?! Like come on dude, having any EVF (Even the .5 magnification of the one you say isn't worth it) is better than having NONE. What about Shooting outdoors, shooting discrete and making sure your composition is spot on! An EVF is great for all that but here you go again making excused for the S9. Its like you can't help it. In conclusion, for an IN DEPTH COMPARISON this failed on SOOOOO MANY LEVELS. -You never mentioned the lack of a hotshoe, -You did zero Flash Photography (Something that is AMAZING with the X100VI and its blazing fast Leaf shutter) - You went out of your way to not show the banding that occurs with the S9 - You avoided showing the S9's rolling shutter performance - You speak about the Panasonic's interchangeable lenses while completely leaving out that the X100Vi also has interchangable lenses in the form of lens adapters plus it works well with Anamorphic adapters, the guys over at CineD did an entire video on that. - You gloss over the BEST features of the X100VI while simultaneously making excuses for the S9 at every turn This is why people are starting to not trust camera reviewers, you claim to be making a proper camere comparison but all I saw was a quick video that promotes the S9 by praising its strengths and glossing over its many weaknesses. And when the next camera comes out it will be rinse and repeat. I honestly thought you were above that but clearly I was mistaken. Edited: Spelling

Criticizing the amount of time that I spend on negative points?! Seriously? 1. You don't need shutter speeds above 1/100s for the “nightlife”. The rest of your described situations is exactly what the S9 is NOT designed to do. That is why I will spend even less time talking about it the next time. 2. Yes, that is exactly what most people don't do. As I have said, if you need longer recording times, you need something else, I'm not sure what is so difficult to understand there. 3.
