Panasonic RF-2200 : Part 2 - Repair tips and lessons learned

Ойын-сауық

What started out as a bit of a dumpster fire turned out to be a pretty good performing radio.
I think it's a keeper ☺

The way you interpret systems and subsystems, circuits and components (with or without documentation) and then modify manufacturers testing procedures etc. to maximize functionality is so amazing to me. Thanks for the fun Tony 🎉😃

Hey 👋 Tony , my father got that radio brand new in the box when I was a teenager, and 61 one year old, my father just celebrate his 87 birthday on February 11 , he gave me the radio 📻, still kicking better than a brand new radio . Thanks 🙏 for the videos and for reviving in me such a bunch of wonderful memories from my youth. He used to own a Zenith Transoceanic , that one I don’t know the were about, but he got it when I was around 8 years old , also brand new , he was a fanatic of short wave radio listening, Grunding was one of his favorite brands back then. Miss those days so much .

I’ve owned my RF-2200 since 1977, and had it recapped and aligned a couple of years ago. Keeping a dust cover on it is highly recommended. Also, tuning in SSB with the BFO is made much easier by gearing the main tuning down to “Slow”. As you discovered, this is one radio that one can safely say it makes sense to do a complete recap on. When I saw your first video, the telltale sign for me was how high you had the volume knob up. With new caps, this radio should have booming audio.

Great series, Tony! I just dug my 2200 out of my basement which I purchased over twenty years ago for around 50 dollars..... AM and FM work great, but sadly no Shortwave bands are functioning. I'm sure it needs a switch overhaul as shown in your presentation, more than I can handle in my "senior years" I'll probably use it for Am D'xing . Luckily it was stored with no batteries installed. I've been listening to an oldies station in Nashua N. H. AM 900. It's a 900 watt transmitter with some pretty aggressive audio processing and sounds great. Power for the station is 100 watts at dusk...

Back in the day, when I worked for a local NPR station affiliated with the public library, we had to align FM SCA "talking library" radios in a EFI and RF shielded room because the sets were cheap, extremely sensitive, and had little shielding.

22:43 That bandswitch, if you noticed, the black oxide is only on the outer edges, there where the contacts are in closer contact with the atmosphere because there are some holes in the metal casing of the switch. I noticed that always with the large R/PB switches from tape recorders too. It is therefore a good idea to stick some good sticky tape over these holes to close it off.

Those purple caps make a mess. I repaired a Roland drum machine that had many traces eaten away due to leakage. I replaced all of them on my Technics table and they all had fuzzy, green legs.

I’m sure the wax is there for a reason. For the factory to take the time to put it there, indicates there is a reason for it. You mentioned your hand was affecting the performance. So obviously this radio is extremely sensitive. The wax is likely there to keep atmospheric humidity (and it’s conductivity) off the sensitive board to help stabilize tuning.

Hi Tony, I have one of those. My parents bought it in the 80's when they worked in China, so they could listen to Voice of America. (That was before China began their Balloon messenger service.) It's not working, I suspect it is the "horrid switches" needing Deoxit. (I had to wonder if that was the issue with the xtal marker on yours not working, then working.) It really is a great radio, even with it's quirks. Hopefully, I can bring it back to life. The videos are of immense help.

Good job, Tony, on a service-unfriendly radio! They have used cost-cutting procedures with no shielding on critical circuits, and flimsy mechanical construction. End result is great, but with many work hours, I guess

I'm doing one of these now. MW/SW was stone dead. Then I found the battery corrosion in almost the exact same place you did. A quick jumper between TR10 and L28 solved the problem. Still deciding on whether or not I will recap, as there are no obvious issues, hum or distortion that I can discern. I am seeing a bit of flickering in the dial lamps, all in time to the music that happens to be playing. Perhaps a power supply issue to unearth?

I am going to order new capacitors for my RF-2200 but I am wondering if it would be better to replace the smaller electrolytic caps (like the .22uf, 1uf, 4.7uf ) with ceramic caps? Any reason I shouldn’t substitute ceramics for those smaller values? Thank you.

Yes. That was my first attempt. It didn't work, which is unusual. The only way was to disassemble it as you saw. Spraying it with deoxit would fix it for a while, only to have the issue return.

I have just purchased a RF-2200 it came with the usual issues, MW and SW did not work at all but it can be easily solved spraying contact cleaner in the switches. I have another issue that I do not how to solve it, the dial log shows another frequency that the one I am listening. Ex. Listening 1548 Khz shows in the red line almost 1600 Khz, How to read the dial on Fm? Do I have to dismantle the radio in ordenr to reach the tuning shaft and align the frequency? Thanks in advance.

What may have happened is the coupling between the knob and the switch may have skipped a gear. This can happen especially when you have the back cover off. I think I showed this in the video. You should be able to remove the rear cover and pop it back into place. I hope I didn't misunderstand the question, but that's what I thin k is going on.

I pretty much covered everything in the video. The other SW bands are exactly the same as the first one, when it comes to the alignment procedure. I know there is probably some things I missed in the video, but feel free to comment, if you have any questions. I'll try to answer you to the best of my knowledge.

@@xraytonyb I have already replaced all rlrctrolytic cpas with fresh Panasonic and Rubycom ones but the sound is now too bassy and 'boring' gor my taste. I see in your videos that the main capacitors are Nichicon , brown is PS series but the golden I do not the series. I cannot identify the blue ones 100uf which brand are. Is the sound in your radio clearer or in the bassy side? Please . I fyou could tell me the series of the golden and the blue ones I would be very grateful. I have not started the alignment yet.
