Panasonic LUMIX G9II vs. LUMIX S5IIX: The Best E-Stabilization Tested!?

Ғылым және технология

Welcome to my in-camera stabilization comparison between the Panasonic LUMIX S5IIX and the LUMIX G9II. Panasonic recently released a new firmware for the S5II and S5IIX, that upgraded the IBIS, autofocus, and a bunch of other stuff. This video will compare how the new e-stabilisation compares between the G9II and S5II or S5IIX on all settings with fairly comparable lenses. The Panasonic LUMIX G9II is a Micro Four Thirds camera and the Lumix S5II and S5IIX are Full Frame cameras.

One thing I can say, is that Panasonic has come a long way with the S5ii/x and the G9ii. These two cameras are game changers for Panasonic. I wish I could own them all.

Hi, everyone! This video test was requested in the comment section, so thanks for the idea! This test could go either way, depending on which mode you're in - let me know what you think of the results. I just wanted to let you know this was all shot in the Natural Picture Profile in Aperture Priority mode.

To me the most useful thing is seeing that the basic E stabilization is great - high E stabilization might be needed for even rougher situations, but for the walk and vlog that you tested, basic seemed more than good enough.

Great comparison. I’ve noticed on S5ii IBiS-only now has warpy effect. Your tests confirmed it. It seems now you definitely need to use e-stabilization (at least on low/standard) whenever handheld, to avoid warp effect.

I've got the vanilla S5 and S5iiX. I love/hate gimbals. Love what they do, but despise constant balancing and storage. Even if this update decreases gimbal use by even 1/3, it's a game changer. That means many, many more situations where I can use IBIS in place of lugging around a gimbal. The improved IBIS and autofocus (not to mention open gate, internal ProRes, internal 10-bit 422 6K, etc) has made the S5 series spectacular. S5iiX could be $3,500 and still be a steal (it's sub $2k).

Nice! I've been playing around with this and on my S5ii I think the "std" E-stab is the sweet spot. " High" has a crop size that is just shy of switching to ASPC. If you get bored, it would be interesting to see what effect "std" and "high" have on rolling shutter....I don't know what a fair and real life test for that would be as most examples are extreme whip pans which I don't think are a realistic representation of typical everyday shooting.

I saw somewhere else that the s5iix + estab on high makes it almost a perfect apsc crop, turning the s5 series in the ultimate s35 video beast with perfect stabe and 4 60p without crop (already in apsc). Ideal for the sigma apsc series in L mount! Another thing: what causes the vignetting in the estab modes on the g9ii?

Really good comparison! Both camera's are showing excellent results! The bigger crop on the S5XII could be related to the lens distortion (fish eye effect). Prime lenses are much better in flat field view than zoom lenses. Almost nobody detects a distortion of 1% in a photo from a zoom lens but the effect is ugly visible in a not cropped stabilized video. I do not believe the crop with stabilization is depended on both of the used camera's I think it is the lens.

Hi Geeky Nerdy Techy, the corners seem to flicker between slight changes of brightness with the estabilisation. Do you know if it’s due to some vignetting issues and the software trying to manipulate the image constantly and therefore introducing a vignetting-flickering issue?

@@0xdc179 in the case they gonna bring any of this features to S5 or older bodies, like the GH6 or GH5M2, I think it will be in the future, to keep it exclusive for the newer bodies, and have them more "interesting" for the people. If it's the case, they're doing "dirty" for the customers of older bodies, but still, they're a company, and compared to other brands, they care for the customer with fairly long term updates like this. In my case, with the S5II, feels like a new camera, with the E-Stab High, which makes it feel like a don't even need a gimbal, unless I have to run.

4K60p crops to a 1.5x from the FF, and the E-Stab High crops an additional of 1.4x. So, let's say you wanna record on 4K60p with E-Stab High, just do the math. 24 x 1.5 = 36mm (FOVequiv) for APS-C mode which is 4K60p 36 x 1.4 = 50.4mm (FOV equiv) for the E-Stab High If you need more flexibility, you can use 4K30p, so you can switch between FF and APS-C mode unlike in 4K60p. I noticed also that with the crop of E-Stab High, you can notice a sub 4K resolution if you pixel peep, but still quite good if you ask me.
