@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for that, I thought I was going mad. I personally think this will be a Killer Feature for the GH6 as it will become more economical to use when compared to recording to CF Express and SD cards which cost stupid prices. While waiting, I've just bought a Samsung T7 2TB drive.

Richard, good review. You can also consider using nvme drives with are substantially faster and smaller. There's always the option to use a compact flash to usb adapter as well. Maybe this will prevent the limitation posed by the new FW.

Hi Richard, do you think it is better to use Sandisk Extreme Pro instead Sandisk Extreme NON Pro? If both are connected to the USB port, the read/write speed is greatly reduced because they find the bottleneck on the USB port. So it makes no sense to use the Pro version which is more expensive. Maybe am I wrong? Thank you for your thought.

I invested in the SSD recording option for my GH6 and it works perfectly; however, I have abandoned this approach because it doesn’t allow me to power the camera via USB-C. Recently the price of CF Express Type B cards has dropped so now I have a 2 TB card.

There is another SSD Con. I tried to set up Custom Menus. C1 being 5.7K 60p, SSD on, C2 4K 120p SSD Off, C3 FHD. 240p.SSD Off. If you switch between custom menus it carries over the SSD setting and therefore in my case going from C1 to C2 it drops the frame rate to 60p and leaves SSD on even though the set up had it off. You therefore cannot quickly switch during a shoot to High Frame Rate unless you remember to switch off SSD Recording. Very annoying and just another chance of error.

I really don't see the point of recording externally... The pros you listed aren't so valid... 1/ Cost : Cfast isn't so expensive 2/ you always have to backup data anyway before working on a drive (or on a card)... and the Cfast have faster read speeds than a T5 or T7 ssd 3/ temperature has never been an issue for me, the fan will speed up if there is a risk. The only real world usage is if you want to record in high resolution for a very long time : ex leave the camera somewhere in case something happens.... But then it doesn't work because you can't use USB power, and in 80 minutes your battery dies. Unless you can use a hub or something.... I'd love to hear about someone who actually needs this. Panasonic please : we need full sensor readout (4:3) at 50P or even faster (even if it's a lower resolution, just no crop) : so we can crop later in post for releasing instagram videos with the same footage. Also, more compatibility with DJI stuff (menus via hdmi like sony viera)

SSD??? Which protokoll are we talking? SSD just = NAND Memory. BUT: -It can be SATA 3 / 6 Protokoll -It can be PCI Protokoll as well = NVMe -or M2 SATA all different protokols but all connect via USB Type C! All different speeds as well. I assume it is just SATA protokoll - which would be very said and very slow!
