Looks like the GH6 firmware update will not be available till 27-9-22. At least it will give me time to buy an SSD.

@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for that, I thought I was going mad. I personally think this will be a Killer Feature for the GH6 as it will become more economical to use when compared to recording to CF Express and SD cards which cost stupid prices. While waiting, I've just bought a Samsung T7 2TB drive.

Can you get a t5 instead? While I managed to use a t7 without much issues, it is not on the officially supported SSD list

@@TheRealRichardWong Got it yesterday, the T7 works without problems, made long sessions in ProRes 5.7k and 4k 60fps 1.9 GB HQ. Perfect, ordered another 2 ones - and it only gets warm not hot. Used the KONDOR Blue USB C auf USB C Kabel 3.1 Gen 2 10 Gbit/s 100 W, saw in a Video, seems to be a perfect combination
Thank you for the video, Richard. Bummer that the GH6 can record up to 4K 120p internally but recording to SSD is capped at 4K 30p :( By the way, I see that the first comment to your video left by nancy Hernandez is a spam bot. I guess you know you have made it big on youtube when spam bots immediately leave comments on your videos ;)

Definitely the most complete announcement of the new firmware. I think I would probably put an NVME drive in a USB housing if the speed actually mattered.
@TheRealRichardWong

I think it depends on what format you are recording, if prores/HQ. definitely need a very fast drive

Great announcement for the GH6. I wonder if you need a modern USB cable to support the high data rate.
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure you need a good cable. If you get a SSD drive usually it would comes with a cable that should be good enough (my T7 does, even though it's not officially supported by the GH6)
Panasonic needs to enable external raw recording over SSD

@@TheRealRichardWong This is all I was hoping for :(((((
Richard, good review. You can also consider using nvme drives with are substantially faster and smaller. There's always the option to use a compact flash to usb adapter as well. Maybe this will prevent the limitation posed by the new FW.

You are right, I'm thinking about it, but it is impossible to find good brands for nvme drives. You will find poor nvme drives. They are fast but unreliable.
Hi Richard, do you think it is better to use Sandisk Extreme Pro instead Sandisk Extreme NON Pro? If both are connected to the USB port, the read/write speed is greatly reduced because they find the bottleneck on the USB port. So it makes no sense to use the Pro version which is more expensive. Maybe am I wrong? Thank you for your thought.
I'm really hoping for Braw. For Davini Resolve users like myself this would be huge.

yes I'm a Davinci Resolve user too.
Hi Richard, great video, covers the pros and cons really well. I already have a Samsung T7 which hopefully I will be able to use - fingers crossed that it will work. Will you be able to record in All-I as well as ProRes with the SSD recording? Are you able to please tell me the name of the SSD drive holder and cage that you use or link them in the description?
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
Hi David, sorry I only just read your comment. The SSD drive holder is from Nitze: nitze.hk/index.php?route=product/product&path=64_98&product_id=477 I'll add it to description now as well thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately you can only record in one video format at a time.
I invested in the SSD recording option for my GH6 and it works perfectly; however, I have abandoned this approach because it doesn’t allow me to power the camera via USB-C. Recently the price of CF Express Type B cards has dropped so now I have a 2 TB card.

Yes I wish the USB port on our cameras can be more advanced so it can handle a USB hub and multiple accessories. Or do what Nikon has done and have more than one USB port
Samsung T3 also works with ProRes 5.7k jsut did a 35 min recording on it. what matters in the cable. Works with the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 cable. My T7 Shield keeps cutting out with the included cable.

How do you think....will there be another mega update for lumix s5? For reduceing crop, time limits and internal 6k
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
I would LOVE to see some big update for the S5, but i feel crop/time limit are restricted by the hardware limitations like sensor speed readout and thermal management so it's very unlikely we will see anything like that.
Thanks, great video. What would be the best way to do a PRORES RAW and a proxy file at the same time? Also, since the proxy file will have to be rendered (?), how then are you able to edit the proxy file and be able to represent all the information in the RAW file?
Richard is there a combined SSD with built-in ~10000 mAh battery? This sounds like the ideal solution for me: one cable - one port with both storage and charging. 😊 Thanks for great video.
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
Haha no, not that i have heard of. I think it would be great if Panasonic managed to make the camera supports USB hub or splitter or something so we can use both a battery and a SSD drive at the same time
The older ZCAM E2 can record 4K 120 16x9, 4K WIDE 150fps, 2.7K 16x9 170fps and 1080p 240fps to SSD via USB-C in Prores, so why can't the GH6 record above 60fps to SSD?
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
Good question, I would like to know the answer too!
You can not even buy brand new T5 now. If somewhere does, it is priced way way higher than T7.
There is another SSD Con. I tried to set up Custom Menus. C1 being 5.7K 60p, SSD on, C2 4K 120p SSD Off, C3 FHD. 240p.SSD Off. If you switch between custom menus it carries over the SSD setting and therefore in my case going from C1 to C2 it drops the frame rate to 60p and leaves SSD on even though the set up had it off. You therefore cannot quickly switch during a shoot to High Frame Rate unless you remember to switch off SSD Recording. Very annoying and just another chance of error.
I don't know if its just me, but when I go to the Panasonic Website I can only download firmware version 2.0. I can not find the 2.2 update. Am I doing something wrong?

Panasonic’s website states 512GB max on CFexpress card. I’m wondering if the camera was able to format your 1TB correctly?

Hey Alex, where do you see that list? My understanding is that there are 1TB and even 2TB CFE cards on the official approved CFExpress card list My Pergear 1TB card appears to work well with the GH6
Does the SanDisk Extreme Pro 2TB Portable NVMe SSD, USB-C, up to 2000MB/s work with GH6?

You would need to check the Panasonic website and see if it's officially supported. But if not, it may still works if it's sustain write speed is fast enough
I have installed the firmware update all went well but after recording some test footage and plugging in my SSD to my Mac to use with final cut I have discovered that the drive is seen as a memory card not as a disk and therefore final cut pro cannot edit the files leaving them in place. So at the end I need to copy the files somwhere else this is actually increasing my storage requirements!!!!

Hello. I downloaded the V2.2 update and am about to purchase the Samsung T7 SSD (NOT APPROVED BY PANASONIC) I'll see if it works has it appears to have the same specs as the Sandisk SSD. My dumb ? to you is this, I am using a Anker battery pack (USB-C) to extend the life to the terrible GH-6 battery. To your knowledge, is there a connector (like a USB-C hub) that will allow me to connect the SSD and the Battery pack to the Camera? Please excuse me if it's a dumb ?

Will the S5Xii record to SSD?
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
Yes. but exact details not announced yet
I really don't see the point of recording externally... The pros you listed aren't so valid... 1/ Cost : Cfast isn't so expensive 2/ you always have to backup data anyway before working on a drive (or on a card)... and the Cfast have faster read speeds than a T5 or T7 ssd 3/ temperature has never been an issue for me, the fan will speed up if there is a risk. The only real world usage is if you want to record in high resolution for a very long time : ex leave the camera somewhere in case something happens.... But then it doesn't work because you can't use USB power, and in 80 minutes your battery dies. Unless you can use a hub or something.... I'd love to hear about someone who actually needs this. Panasonic please : we need full sensor readout (4:3) at 50P or even faster (even if it's a lower resolution, just no crop) : so we can crop later in post for releasing instagram videos with the same footage. Also, more compatibility with DJI stuff (menus via hdmi like sony viera)
SSD??? Which protokoll are we talking? SSD just = NAND Memory. BUT: -It can be SATA 3 / 6 Protokoll -It can be PCI Protokoll as well = NVMe -or M2 SATA all different protokols but all connect via USB Type C! All different speeds as well. I assume it is just SATA protokoll - which would be very said and very slow!
