Panasonic FZ1000 Hands-On Field Test

4K recording, a 1" type sensor camera with a 25-400mm equivalent F2.8-4 lens for under a grand? Panasonic is on a roll. In this episode TCSTV's Chris Niccolls takes a look at the incredibly powerful Panasonic FZ1000 to see if it can really be as impressive as the specs look on paper.

I'm still using my FZ1000, and it's still performing impeccably. As I exclusively use it for photography (I don't take advantage of the video features), there's no doubt that the versatility it provides is key. Also, it has both RAW format, and a 1 inch sensor, neither of which were common in bridge cameras at the time it was made (those, plus the 25-400 mm lens, with a max aperture of f4.0 at full zoom, are the primary reasons I purchased this, and they're what keep me going back to it whenever I'm doing serious photography, i.e. when a cellphone camera just won't do). Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the autofocus; like, I do use manual focus a lot of the time, as it gives me a lot of control given the type of photos I'm taking, but when I'm in a rush, and a subject just isn't going to sit still for me, the autofocus is like a little laser-beam, perfectly snapping exactly what I want to see into focus. Seriously - these things were $900 USD at launch. For the price, they give you serious quality. Maybe not quite what a DSLR will give you (especially in the low-light, high ISO ranges), but to get the versatility that the FZ1000 offers would require spending upwards of $3,000 USD for a decent entry-level DSLR and zoom lens (Canon sells a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens for $2,200 USD - I'm sure the image quality it produces is excellent, but is it excellent ENOUGH to spend that money when you can spend $900 on something that'll get you 90% of the way there...with a slightly-larger max-zoom aperture, PLUS being able to shoot at 25 mm, instead of 100 mm, when fully zoomed-out?).

I just read your comment and I have the same camera that I bought from a guy in January of 2022 that he got for a present several years ago. He only took about 12 shots with it so it was like brand new to me. I paid 290 euros for it and I have taken many thousands of shots with it since then. It still for sale in a big mall here in Barcelona for 799 euros but last fall it was on sale for a few months for 500 euros. So I got quite a bargain when I bought this camera. There are so many different settings on this camera that it will take me another few years just to learn what it's capable of doing because of my poor memory. I used the camera of my android phone for 4 years but this camera is superior to that old phone that doesn't work anymore. I have used the 4k video recorder in his camera and it produces very high quality videos on my laptop. I would love to see them on a big screen to see how good a quality my videos are but so far, I haven't checked that out. As far as the photos, I share them in several groups that I'm involved with on three different social media platforms and now I have many followers who love them. I know that it's the kind of shots I take that makes a good photo but this camera has motivated me to take at least 2000 shots per week because it's so much easier to operate than my old android phone camera which always took a bit of time to get ready for a shot so it was useless in street photography when I needed to get a quick shot of certain people, dogs, etc. This camera works very fast and if I see an subject way in the distance, the zoom works fast to bring it into full view for me to take the shot. I would never go back to a phone camera that I would have to pay more than 1,000 euros for to get similar quality of photos and videos.

@@wildlifelvr7929 Unfortunately, I haven't really done much of that kind of photography. I mean, I've given it a shot a few times, but the reality is that when you're zoomed in to the max, it's hard to capture the exact moment when the bird is in frame. That said, if you set the camera to a burst setting, and used a low f-stop and high shutter speed (plus manually setting focus to infinity), I think you'd have a decent chance of getting some good shots. I just don't have the patience (and birds generally don't stick around waiting for me to get the right settings selected!). Also, 400 mm zoom (35 mm equivalent) is awesome (especially given the size of the sensor), but I don't know that it would meet all of your needs (depends on how close the birds are willing to come, I suppose). The FZ1000 is obviously a very good camera, offering a lot of versatility for a not-so-expensive price (also, when you're on a trip somewhere, it's a huge pain to carry around a bag with multiple lenses in addition to the camera body, so being able to do 80-90% of what the DSLR + 3 lenses can do, without having that drawback, is a big advantage). Personally, I think it would perform better than other cameras of similar type (as they generally have smaller sensors, which makes their frequently-superior zoom magnitude a lot less useful), but it wouldn't come close to the result you could get with a DSLR and a decent zoom lens. I have taken plenty of photos of birds NOT flying with it though, and it has never let me down for that application.

I have this camera for 3 months now and WOW. Great for video! Yes it does not have the headphones but you can get general idea of the volume by the level meter. It has 4K but most people are not ready to view 4K, however the 1080p 50p is buttery smooth. No stepless aperture but the auto ISO gets this covered in most situations. I was very tempted to buy an RX10 but in my country it is $120-$130 more.

Love this camera as an all-in-one, run-and-gun camera, to shoot macro to normal and zoom. And to obtain f4.0 at 400mm is something most cameras and lenses won't give you. It is the ONLY camera in my history of camera I purchased twice. Bought it when it first released in mid-2014. Used it through February of this year, then sold it. After a lapse of time I regretted that move and repurchased again on auction. Loving the welcome home of round two of this camera. Am now considering the Canon G5x which just released today here in Japan. That will fill the gap for me when I want compactness in low light conditions (pub, party, etc.) providing a brighter lens (f1.8 - f2.8, RX100 competitor) and then the FZ1000 can fill in with f2.8 - f4.0 for all other normal shooting environments... macro, normal or zoom.

I love the really long zoom and never having to carry and change lenses. I haven't done much with video using this camera. I think that was because I prefer the convenience of getting video with my Samsung Galaxy S9 plus. I might check out the 4K setting. I don't like when cameras crop the video on 4k. That might be why I never used it.

The FZ 1000 seems to be a fantastic choice, though, like TCS said I wish there were better codecs and bit rates for the 1080p mode. Also, I love were these bridge camera's are going.. In the future, these could come up with even bigger sensors, which means, even better IQ and much better high ISO performance.

I have ordered my Panasonic FZ1000 yesterday on amazon.de for only 710,- euros included shipping, tax and handling (I get it delivered saturday 23rd of januari together with 2 U3 64Gb SD cards and screenprotector for 789,43 euro included shipping, tax and handling!). I really think this camera will be hard to beat right now in price and quality. I watched a lot of UHD video's shot with the FZ1000 and I am really impressed with the quality (just make sure you shoot in 4k/UHD always and downgrade to 1080p eventually). Like stated in the description: the 20,1 Megapixel 1" sensor, 4K recording, f2.8-4 zoomlens, fast autofocus, microphone in (more important for me then headphone out really, i just put in my Roland binaural microphones in and i have the best 3d sound experience together with sharp 4k video) and the fact it has a built in flash and flash hotshoe for triggering big flash units really made me order this camera. Also the very good viewfinder and articulating screen, Clean HDMI output plus it can be operated on your smartphone by WiFi makes it really one of the best camera's out there at this moment. I just need to order some extra batterys, UV filter, variable ND filter and (if it's compatible) an Atomos Ninja2 HDMI recorder.

Planning on getting one of these in January on my trip to the US. But I have a problem: I just gave up on using my Nikon D7000: I guess we are not all going to be artistic photographers who can learn to use manual settings very well, and I really got tired of having to handle and take care of many changeable lenses [I got me a 50mm Prime, and a 24-85mm Prime] and lugging. I just got tired and realised I simply should go back to [more or less] a simple Point and Shoot. So I have put my D7000 out on sale. [Went back to my old, simple Olympus SP 800UZ point and shoot for now.] But since I can afford it, I want to get something that is bigger and better [BUT still can be used as a basic Point and Shoot, more or less.]. The FZ1000 seems to fit! I take family pictures and pictures on the range, with some close-ups of firearms I'm working on. Yes, I print a few, but most go online. Now, my question is - can I use the FZ1000 as a "higher-level" point-and-shoot type camera? Now, I know it is why its called a "Bridge" camera, but I would really like to know. Can I just put this in "Auto" setting and use this for reasonably good holiday snaps, family stuff, zoomed pics etc? Without seeming like a twerp? [Apologies to all twerps out there!] I have been DROOLING over this FZ1000!

Excellent review. I would choose RX10 because weather sealing, better Full HD video features, headphone jack, and constant aperture mean more to me, albeit more expensive yet affordable if you just save up for it. Give it some time, as 4K is still rather new and very limited in most households right now, although the technology itself is already quite old in movie theaters. There is already 8K but will be years before that exists in consumer cameras.

TheCameraStoreTV thx for the review! Chris for my taste delivers just the adequate information density. Regarding the FZ1000 I wonder if you could get better results experimenting with the white balance, since it obviously has a slight green cast. Maybe low light colors would get better with an adjusted white balance(with whitegreen paper in front?). Also good to know was, if low light grain of the GH4 is so much superior justifying an extra 1000 bugs. Especially because you won't get a comparable Leica lens(or is there?) for flexability.

June 2017, just bought the FZ1000. Now for 620$, can't say no to that. I looked and looked and the only alternative to the FZ1000 is the Sony which cost around 1000$ more. For 620$ it's a no brainer.

In the description you mention it has a 25-400mm f/2.8-4 lens, which I hate to say is incorrect. In 35mm terms, the lens is equivalent to a 25-400mm f/7.6-10.8, since you also have to multiply the aperture by the crop factor :) Great video nonetheless, I always enjoy watching TCSTV so keep up the great work.

well actually it is still f/2.8-4 in terms of light hitting the sensor. its the depth of field (bokeh) equivalent to a f/7.6-10.8 on a 35mm camera.

Spot on Lewis! It's pointless to convert one figure to a 35mm equivalent but not the other.

PeeHooo I didn't say that the light intensity changed. My point was that converting the focal length to 35mm equivalent but not the aperture is wrong.

Lewis Gething I simply don't understand why people don't get it Lewis. Why quote an uncorrected figure next to a corrected 35mm figure? Just say 25-400mm fov(35mm equiv) and nobody would complain.

What about AE-LOCK in video mode? Can we lock exposure or not? Older cameras like FZ28 can not lock exposure!

Can you explain the punch in issue in 4K again? I thought cropping 4K in post makes for a tighter shot anyways?

The sensor crops significantly when switching to 4K recording. This is before you do a digital crop in post. If you want 4K, but like to shoot wider angles, the GH4 is a better bet. Jordan @ TCSTV

I prefer deep/long depth of field for videos when [almost] everything is in focus. Will this camera be able to achieve this with its minimum aperture of f8? Would FZ200 be a better choice for this? Thank you

If you were in a situation where video just edged out photography...say 60/40...would you choose the FZ1000 of the Pentax K-3? Or something else in that same price point? At this point 4K is not a necessity. Thanks! PS...What do you use to film your KZread videos? The quality is exceptional.

Great review ! Shooting video, is there any *slow* zooming capability? - maybe using the zoom ring not the zoom button? That's the main minor complaint I have for my FZ-200 - 2 speeds zoom button but not smart enough - low speed still much too quick during a video shoot...

Is this a good camera for real estate photography?...A wide angle is a must but the poor low light functionality worries me for indoor pics. I'm a total newbie who has been using a cheap Canon powershot sd880 for several years. I've read that the lower model Panasonic Fz70 Lumix is good for low light.

400mm doesn't seem zoomed in much. When you zoomed into that purple flower that was about 6 feet away from you the flower didn't even fill the frame. I guess I'd like to see more zoom!

I'm looking for a huge quality upgrade from my Canon SX-40HS. During my last trip I hated carrying it, and in the end it still made crappy shots during the evening or night. My main candidates were Nikon P7800 and Olympus Stylus 1. I would gladly consider Canon G1X M2, but a lot of the shots that I like from my vacations are taken with ~240mm, so the Canon has to pass. Now, I really love the articulated screens on this FZ1000, as do I love it on P7800. So the dillema: FZ1000 - too big. Also, I'm not going to need 4k video and that much zoom, so I'd be paying for things I don't need. P7800 - not enough zoom. Olympus Stylus 1 - screen is not articulated, and I'm not sure you can set the aperture (everyone keeps saying it's constant) and I don't have the budget for the RX10 Can you please do a review like "best sightseeing and night life capturing camera that's also good for selfies"? Features that would be good for it are: 1. Portability (don't wanna carry anything big and heavy, especially when your messenger bag is already full of shopping goods) 2. Good night shots in an illuminated city. And good video in low light. 3. Ability to narrow the angle for exclusive portraits (don't want many other people in the photo) and for approaching different sights. I'd say 240-250mm is about enough for this. At narrower angles it's hard to feel the photo and understand its contents, and there's often fog or smog that over long distances makes the photo washed out. 4. Selfies. Articulated screens are awesome. You don't need to look for strangers to take lame photos of you. Get those 2 faces in, look at the screen what you'll obtain and bingo! Like, if someone made a camera with 24-240mm lens, 2-2.8 aperture, 1/1.7" or if I'm lucky, a 1" CMOS sensor, articulated screen and relatively compact size, I'd be SOOOO happy.

Which one is better do you think? For me are zoom and smooth video very important. 1- Lumix fz1000 2- Canon 750d 3- Nikon D5300

7:45 It's 100Mbit/sec and not 100MB/sec. Quite a difference. That being said, It's funny that everyone needs 4k so badly right now. Like world piece or AIDS.
