I took identical(ish) photos on the Panasonic Lumix G85 using the Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 lens ($600) vs the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 lens ($150) to see which one gets the juiciest, creamiest, buttery-est of all bokeh (blurry backgrounds). I was kind of shocked by the results 😱😱😱
Both lenses are incredible, but is cheaper better?? Or is it worth spending the extra $500 on the Leica f1.4? Find out who wins in this epic BOKEH BATTLE. Both of these lenses would work great with any micro 4/3 cameras, including GH5, GH5S, G9, GX9, GX85/GX80, G85/G80, GX850, Olympus cameras, and more.

That 1.7 is a great lens on a budget, and I used it happily for years. Now I'm looking at higher-end glass (always used) to squeeze a bit more bokeh into my images, and you have to make up your mind that you get diminishing returns as you trade up. They're better, but they're not _that_ much better. If you're knocking heads with other shooters in the marketplace it's an investment.

That’s really strange! I don’t think there are any stereo audio settings in the GX85, so I would say it’s either the built in mic messing up, or dirt/something might be covering the left mic. Maybe try cleaning out the mics w alcohol on a q-tip?

Ah okay thanks for your reply ! I confirm that the focus ring is "tight" or stiff, even on version II. Doesn't feel bad actually. However, 35-100mm version II feels very loose as a comparison. I think it's because those 2 lenses aren't manufactured in the same place. 12-35mm is made in Japan whereas 35-100mm is made in China ; that could maybe explain the difference in the building process ?

There's nothing in it when comparing these images. It's a very interesting test, however, I think the whole point of the lower aperture might be for low light performance. While we've all become obsessed with isolating the subject and blurring out background we tend to forget that Leica's history lies in journalistic photography and often the extra stops are necessary to handle changing light conditions. If that is your need, the extra money becomes worth it. Of course, I have NO IDEA if the extra few stops make any big differences when it comes to handling lower light. Could you do a comparison of that aspect?

  • @b3naqua

    @b3naqua

    6 жыл бұрын

Great point! I didn't go too into the technical aspects of using lower ISOs and all for this video cuz I wanted it to be a kind of raw bokeh and overall lens performance test. You can see the shutter speed differences in my video's Lightroom comparisons - not surprisingly, the 1/4 can shoot with a slightly quicker SS since it has those few extra aperture stops. Maybe that's why the 1.7 images look slightly more contrasty and saturated? Not sure. I've gotten a few other Qs and comments about low light performance, so maybe I'll do another video on that theme? Thx for your comment!

Usually you don't test sharpness on widest aperture. To compare you usually stop the down to same aperture and measure at the sharpest which would be around 5.6 or so, where you can compare center and corner sharpness.

It I set it to AFS or let the camera do the autofocus by itself it does not make this noise. But if I set it to AFF or AFC and when I keep the shutter halfway pressed in order for it to aquire focus and if it hunts it makes a noise like it is grinding 2 pieces of metal. I am curious if someone else has this issue or it is normal behaviour of this lens. Thanks!

I assume that the Lumix 25mm f/1.7 has the same sharpness as the Lumix 20mm f/1.7. Anyways, for me sharpness is much more important then bokeh, and I do hate the significant fringing on the Leica. Very interesting and funny battle! I get that it is all about bokeh but I think I am just missing one point here : the impact of aperture on the shutter speed. In this battle the subjects were static and easier to shoot. But what about moving objects? If I wanted to take photos of my kids paying, the 1.4 aperture would probably allow the shutter speed to be faster than on 1.7. And in this context it can make a difference on sharpness especially in low lights

Bought the F1.4 about the time F1.7 came out, I think the F1.7 was already out but I wasn't aware of it yet and had already set my mind on buying the F1.4 in any case. I'm quite stubborn so even seeing this video back then probably wouldn't have changed my mind, as even before I got my first MFT body the F1.4 (along with the Oly 60mm F2.8 Macro) were top of my lens list... Strangely for a "standard" lens and considering how long I've had it I've barely used it as I find it too restrictive, either not wide enough or too wide 🤔 it just isn't in high demand with my shooting lifestyle I guess. *However* when I have used it it *never fails* to give a couple of pictures that blow me away with it's colour production, it seems to make even mundane things look fantastic, and I *always* say I should make an effort to use it more. But never do! I'd love to try the F1.7 to see if it gives the same WOW factor. This might sound dumb, but not sure if it's my phone screen, or simply because the shots in your video are test shots, but only a couple of the pictures come close to that WOW factor. Given the nearly indistinguishable difference between the two lenses in the video it would be great to be able to confirm for myself the F1.7 also has the same WOWNESS. Maybe it's a purely psychological thing and I've been brainwashed into thinking the F1.4 is more awesome than it actually is. But I think that feeling is still very real on a personal level, and even if I got hold of the F1.7 to try and it produced exactly the same pictures I don't think I'd sell it. Because for some reason I'd still believe I'd regret not having it at some point despite how little I use this focal length. Maybe it's just that the slight increase in light gathering ability and the far sexier curves of the F1.4 combined with the thought I'd be selling it in order to buy a inferior (albeit almost unnoticeable) lens seems a step backward...

50mm equivalent (25mm) isn't really going to be ideal for portraits. Even 80mm equiv is considered a short portrait lens. I prefer to think of 85 mm equiv as an interior portrait lens. Outdoors even longer would be helpful. I chose the 20mm too because in the past I have found 50mm equiv too tight for general indoor shots. I'm currently looking at either the panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 or the olympus 45mm 1.8 or even the sigma 60mm f2.8 for 85mm to 120mm equivalent portraits.

I have a 25 1.4 bought for 300$ second hand. Also had 20 1.7 which I sold and currently have 42.5 1.7. The problem with all that cheap and compact 1.7 lenses for me is - manual focus. Its terrible. For video I mean. BUT on Panaleica 25 1.4 its actually usable. It doesnt have any acceleration and its RELIABLE to pull focus during video. So.. if they someday give us the option to switch off focus ring acceleration and tune it, I might probably switch to 25 1.7 but for now.. 1.4 will stay with me. Also would be interesting to compare those lenses with Olympus 25 1.2 which is twice as expensive as so called "Leica" (actually made by Sigma, like most Panasonic lenses in case you didnt know already) p.s. Probably would be ok on G9 or GH5 with 179 angle hack due to workable AF and their Focus transition modes. Fine on G85 if you plan mostly to take photos with it. Works in Dual IS 1 mode btw.

Hey I’m a little late. How would you say the 20mm and the 42.5mm compare in quality in photos ? And video ? Things like focus ? And the field of view

Pretty soon we will see videos looking for lenses that have the most and best flare... and we'll be paying up for that. hahaha

I've owned both those lenses and you're right, the 25mm F1.7 is a better choice. My sample of the 25mm F1.4 had lots of artifacts and it's big, heavy, slower AF, and it's also too warm. The cooler color cast on the F1.7 is better for video. The Panasonic 25mm F1.4 is much better than the Voightlander 25mm F095. That thing is horrible wide open and it's a tank. The Olympus 25mm F1.8 is okay though, but too warm.

Thx for your comment! Interesting that you perceive a cooler tone in the f1.7 lens. I like that colors seem slightly more saturated w it too. I’m curious about that massive Voigtlander 0.95 - why do you think it sucks so much wide open?

I tried both the SLR Magic 25mm F095 and the Voightlander 25mm F095. I never tried the Mitikon Speedmaster 25mm F095 or the Olympus 25m F1.2. Reports are that the Mitikon is similar in performance to the Voightlander, just smaller and lighter. And the Olympus 25mm F1.2 is nothing short of amazing and has AF. But it's so big and heavy it undermines the whole concept of micro four thirds. As for the Voightlander and the SLR magic, when you stop them down to F1.4 or F2, they are fine. But what’s the point of buying a fast lens to shoot it at normal apertures. The Panasonic 25mm F1.7 will do it better and cheaper. Wide open both the Voightlander/SLR Magic were not good if you were trying to capture reality. Both were very soft and had lots of purple fringing but the SLR Magic was really bad. My sample of the SLR Magic was so bad the entire image had a purple/magenta cast. Both lenses were really bad if you like color because they made the color muddy. There was vignetting, haze, low contrast, flare, and other aberations that degraded color. However, if you wanted to go for a grungy lo-fi weird look. Then these lenses were okay. You could shoot wide open and try to make the shot look really bad and then run with that theme and make them look worse in post. But you still have to deal with manual focus and a very heavy lens that really doesn’t balance very well on your camera. That's not what micro four thirds is supposed to be about. For good manual focus you need a killer EVF. Forget peaking, you need to eyeball that focal plane to nail the focus on these lenses when shooting wide open. Also forget shooting action or trying to capture a fleeting expression on someone's face. It will take you all day and half the night to focus. The Voightlander 25mm F095 was bad for skin tones when shooting stills and worse for video because of all the aberations affected colors. Colors are very hard to correct in video. The manual focus on the Voightlander worked well for video because it’s not electronic. If you want bokeh, wide open the Voightlander had nice bokeh balls if you got just the right distance from the target and the right background so the bokeh would show up. But to be honest, you don't get into micro four thirds for the bokeh. At F1.4 the Voightlander was actually great. Better then the Panasonic 25mm F1.4. And had great light stars at night, if you’re into that kind of thing. But overall the Panasonic 25mm F1.7 was still better because it did everything okay. Well the Olympus 25mm F1.8 is not bad either. I think Panasonic lenses are cooler in tone as a rule. They also have more contrast and that deepens colors. But I still believe the color tone runs cooler, not warmer. The Panasonic-Leica 25mm F1.4 is an exception, it has a bit of a warm tone to it. As do most Leica lenses. Your reviews are great BTW. Best of luck with the series.

Thanks so much for typing all of that out! After my experience w the fringing on the Leica lens, I'm actually kind of hesitant to go any lower than 1.4. I'd love to mess around w the 12mm f1.4 tho, cuz it seems amazing for wide shots w bokeh. #goals

Yes, I have the Olympus 12mm F2 and it's cool. F1.4 would be cool-er. Also, this completely unrelated but will you be reviewing the new Panasonic GX9. I think Panasonic should give you a brand new GX9 so you can compare it to your GX85. Even if Panasonic doesn't give you a camera, please just rant about the GX9 because that would be very entertaining.
