Panama to Colombia: The Darien Gap, SKETCHY Bridges & Near Assault.

The Pan American Highway is the longest drivable line on the map. But there’s a catch. Between Panama and Colombia there is no road. There exists only the impenetrable Darien National Forest. This area of land has become the most dangerous migration route in the world. The roadless, lawless stretch of terrain is frequented by cartel drug runners, human traffickers, and northbound illegal emigrants. Not exactly the things we’re looking to find.
The documented vehicle attempts are few, the success’ even fewer - backed by militaries, governments, bottomless budgets and indigenous tribes.
However alluring the mysteries of an unconquered terrain, we’ll be crossing the Darien at sea.
This episode is a crescendo that begins with the process of crossing the Darien Gap, and ends at one of the most exciting routes we’ve driven on four wheel. Let’s get into it.
Toyota World Runners vs. The Pan American Highway.

Hi Guys! What a great video 🙌 The further you get, is the more amazed I am by the truck that we worked on briefly together, and you two in general. What a cool vision and actualization story, and what a cool truck! My general rule of thumb is to not be the only one on the street, in most urban places especially after dark. I found myself on a dark street in El Salvador once, with the locals barred inside their houses peering out at me with concern. Brought back memories of bad past experiences growing up in Trinidad.

Columbia was much different that what I expected (well, not the knife-wielding madman) and you guys find the most amazing places. In America, we live a life of such abundance, so those bridges look very sketch, but in reality they used the materials that they had acces too in order to get the job done. I guess, in reality, people like that are the original recyclers. Glad you guys are safe.

Dude! So sorry to hear about the attempted robbery... Such a scary thing to have happened and I am glad you are both okay beyond being rattled. I have a few stories so far on my trip but thankfully nothing that traumatic. On a more positive note, I will be at overland embassy next week sometime! Hopefully I will catch up to you. It would be too funny running into fellow Vancouver Islanders in South America. Cheers! --Blake

I am sorry yall had that experience. I had a similar one on my first trip to Colombia. It is good to see yall are ok. My wife and I built a home in Las Lajas, El Santuario. El Santuario is a little town South East of Medellin in Antioquia. I believe you'll have to pass right through it, if you are going from Medellin to Bogota. We are currently in the US and not in Colombia, but if yall would like a place to camp for the night or even catch a hot shower, yall are are welcome to go check out our little place. I hope yall stay safe and thank you for the videos.

Great adventure you're having. Great to be able to share in it via your videos. One observation for your consideration: when you are driving over a really sketchy bridge, such as the long one at the end, in my opinion, you should really be driving much slower than you were in the video clips shown. The faster you drive, the greater the dynamic impact loading to the structure, and in the case here where the "structure" supporting your trucks weight is transverse timbers of unknown condition....potentially weak and or rotten in places, by driving faster you increase the risk of a structural collapse which could have dire consequences. If you drive really slow and less bouncy, while it might not be as cinematic for the drone, you significantly increase your chances of getting across alive. If you meet any bridge enginers on your travels ask them for an opinion on this and I'll bet they agree.

  • @awkragt

Mostly agree, but locals take the opposite approach and drive super fast. It kinda makes sense as these bridges are former train bridges so the issue is the deck, not the overall structure. Driving faster allows your vehicle to treat a hole in the deck as a pothole, the suspension starts to flex and redistribute weight, then bam you're past the hole, versus if you're super slow you fall in. I watched Hilux taxis basically fly across a sketchy bridge in Peru with that strategy, we drove around the bridge cause I'm a civil engineer and we're not taking chances lol.

So sorry to hear about the bad experience in Cartagena...but I am also so grateful that you are Ok and in good spirits. Since you left, that was the one thing that had me the most worried. Mechanical breakdowns, I believe you could handle. And there is always a good samaritan/mechanic to lend a hand. People stuff...well, let's say that I find the forest less dangerous. Happy and safe travels the rest of the way.
