Clarification: Ships travel north/south between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Twenty years ago my brother and I did a partial canal transit aboard a cruise ship. After anchoring in Gatun Lake, we disembarked to tour the older locks with operating "steam donkeys" instead of tugs and also swim in the lake too. It was an experience I'll never forget!

Wonderful video. Look forward to complete time lapse of trip. We transited same direction west to east back in the 90's. We were on a Crystal Cruise trip, had come down west side of Mexico, and then transited across southern Caribbean with stops on many islands. Hired a car on Aruba and drove with friends around the entire perimeter of the island. Good times. The transit thru the canal was fascinating. A real marvel of engineering. I remember they had a viewing stand where public can sit and watch ships transiting at some point along the way, I think at the western end. Maybe we will see that in the unedited time lapse.

Jeff, loved this! I grew up in Panama, and have 2 sisters who were born there (when there was the Canal Zone, Panama). Gatun Lake is about 85 feet above sea level, so that's why the locks were made to bring you up to the lake, and the back down to sea level. Not sure if you're aware, but Panama has been having a problem with some water shortages, and also deforestation problems. The government is trying to address these issues.

Thank you for the video of the new Panama Canal. I went through the older canal back in 1969 while on the USS Galveston CLG-3, traveling from San Diego to the Med and back again. Since Lake Gatun is fresh water we did a test of our chemical and biological wash down systems. I’m surprised they don’t have the Mules that are on the old canal. One fond memory is the night before we traversed the canal. We had liberty in the Enlisted Mans Club, what a rip roaring time we had there. Now that is another story all together. Take care and stay healthy

@@JeffHK It's good the recharge the batteries from time to time. Some people (mistakenly) think you just sit around all day waiting for something to film, and PRESTO! out comes a video. But it's a LOT more work than that. I can relate. I made a living as a professional photographer for over a decade - and it was WORK! Fun? Oh yeah, there was fun. But there's a lot of hard work that goes into it - your brain gets tired! Been there, done that, got the t-shirt! So Jeff, do what you need to do to keep up the great content. We appreciate it! A lot! Fair Winds, following seas my friend.
