PANAGLAGA (Basket Weaving)

Finalist, Abrenian Heritage Film Festival 2021
The documentary film titled Panaglaga (Basket Weaving) portrays the Tingguian women of Uguis, Nueva Era , Ilocos Norte.
While traditional baskets are sold almost everywhere in the country, the said town where weaving is revered a lost skill , the Tingguian women weaves a small baskets lined with black strips.
The traditional handicrafts and folk arts of our “kailians” from Uguis were initially born out of necessity , yet they are also objects of remarkable beauty . Once used by locals to barter in exchange for basic commodities, the skill of basket weaving seems to be a dying art. Basket weavers are still around in Uguis but few of them were active weavers . In this time of pandemic, we really have arts fighting to survive Covid- 19 impact.

A great and magnificent production showcasing one of the notable products of Uguis, a basket or we call it laga. As far as i can remember one of the oldest "Pinaglaga maker" in our brgy. that i know is Ligaya "Gayya" Guiba. Just sharing.
