PAN AM AIRLINES VISIT TO KARACHI & PAKISTAN 1960s TRAVEL FILM 43664

Made in the 1960s as part of the "New Horizons" series of promotional films, this Pan Am color travel film promotes visits to the “new” South Asian Republic of Pakistan. (The film was made prior to the separation of East Pakistan into the nation of Bangladesh in the early 1970s, but primarily concentrates on West Pakistan). The films opens with a contrasting view of a “pokey ol’ camel” lumbering through the heart of a modern city, Karachi, which is the main seaport and financial center of Pakistan. (Pakistan was created in 1947 as an independent nation for Muslims.) The film shows its viewer many beautiful sites around the city as well as the lines of ships docked at the harbor, which we are told bolsters the nation’s economy. Airlines are also aid the economy, as mark 02:20 shows the viewer a PanAm jet with debarking tourists and cargo. Moments later, the film shows tourists frolicking in its warm waters. “Most visitors of the fragile sex avoid a camel ride, but some folks must try everything once,” the narrator says as young women mount a beast of burden. “They’ll remember this ride. It will be a sore subject with them for a long time.” Others prefer boating or deep-sea fishing on the Arabian Sea, or visits to the Khyber Pass or Himalayas. The bustling city of Peshawar is seen at mark 04:30, which the narrator describes as “one huge shopping center … with a variated mixture of sounds of smells,” as men and women are shown creating and selling their wares. Other sites shown include the Tomb of Jahangir (mark 07:30), a mausoleum built for Jahangir, who ruled the Mughal Empire from 1605 to 1627, Sheesh Mahal (“The Palace of Mirrors”) constructed in the early 1630s, and Badshahi Mosque in the city of Lahore. With its rich history, the narrator concludes that Pakistan is a country that close at hand, thanks to air travel.

I am indian and based on my assessment of pak history I think following were the reasons for the downfall of pakistan: 1) 1965 war which lead to an arms embargo by the US and economic aid stopped 2) separation of east pakistan 3) adoption of socialist policies by z.a bhutto in the 1970's which slowed down economic growth and created debts. 4) involvement in Afghan jihad which gave rise to terrorism and violence and fall in investments 5) political instability during the 90's which lead to fall in investor confidence 6) involvement in Afghanistan for the 2nd time 7) more socialist policies by zardari and shariff which lead to more corruption and debts. 8) developing nuclear weapons which lead to further economic sanctions and rising debt. 9) finally involvement of military which helped in the short run but in the long run failed to develop independent and effective institutions.

Wow you summed it up pretty good. As a Pakistani I also came to a conclusion that these reasons you mentioned, all of them played a role to put us in the mess we are in here now. Also did you knoe ZA bhutto's selfishness and cunning was a huge venom that spread in young Pakistan. He was the one who convinced the normally cautios Ayub Khan to engage in the 1965 war... and later on even when yahya khan had chaired a meeting for both elected majority parties of east and west Pakistan PPP of bhutto and Awami league of Mujib but bhutto refused to attend it and pressured yahya by convincing him that mujib was a traitor and if an east pakistani won the elections they would fight for seperatism even though they only wanted greater autonomy... thank god Zia hanged him for the traitor he was!

I noticed that too. The narrator called Baloch short and wiry, the Baloch are wiry but not short (neither tall) and he didn't mentioned Sindhi's and migrants (now Muhajir's). They did everything perfectly to unsettle this region as much as they could and somehow their plot can be seen flourished.

Pak killed off it's diversity. That is one very significant reason why the country is in dire straits today. Because you might think a homogeneous country would be a good thing. But forget that diversity allows people to adjust and live. Whereas a homogenized society becomes even more insular because people have less tolerance to adjust. I am an Indian and love India's diversity. Going from one state to another is like going to a foreign country, new language, customs, food, culture, weather, terrain etc. All this makes the country most interesting and makes life more interesting.

For everyone who's like "OMG Pakistan was so amazing then", you do realise this is a tourist film? Karachi might have had its little oases of 'westernised modernity', but the country as a whole was much more feudal then than it is now.

Also, remember the anti Ahmadi riots in the 1950s? Ayub’s “decade of development” actually broke Pakistan. (c) Basis for the assumption that Hindu and Muslim Bengalis don’t get along?

Minorities were free. Quaid created an independent state where every person is free to live their lives with their religious ideologies. Pakistan was created a liberal state. Thanks to your zia Pakistan is now extremely intolerable. Plus religion is not just about women covering btw. Pakistan went downhill. Secondly, if we accept for the sake of argument that Jinnah made this country as a liberal one, then he had no right to impose his personal will on the rest of the population. Islamic sentiment rose among the population as a natural result of their inclinations whereas "liberalism" had to forced down their throats via globalization of Western ethics and the degradation of local cultures and values. Our country is in turmoil due to its history as a colony of the West and being "independent" within the limits of a tyrannical international community controlled by a powerful few.

One of the biggest reasons for Karachis or in broader sense Pakistans downfall was (In my opinion) due to following reasons ; > Involvement in unnecessary and unwinnable wars where as our resources could have been allocated to infrastructure development > Trying to make the country homogenous (Reason why East Pakistan wanted separation) - We should have focused on welcoming diversity, personal beliefs (No matter what so long as they do not cause any physical harm to anyone in any way) > Observe how people wore relatively revealing clothing without any moral policing, now if someone even remotely tries to do that they would be probably shot, raped or humiliated or harmed in some way or the other. This is why foreigners are afraid to come in fear of their lives. No foreigners no foreign investment. Even the GCC has opened up whereas we are moving back in stoneage physically harming people who have not laid a finger on us just because of their choice of clothing. > Mixing relegion with govt, this was a huge blunder. State and relegion should be kept apart. Every one should be allowed to practise their beliefs without fear of harrasement or harm. This is why we created Pakistan in the first place but we turned to the very monsters we once fought.
