That's the rule of the sith. Serve until you are stronger than your boss then murder him and find someone with lots of potential to serve you. If vader had succeeded and Luke went dark side sith rule dictates that luke serve him until he one day overthrows him.

Yes, and if each apprentice got stronger than their master, than that mean the power of the sith would grow since each apprentice would surpass the master, and after becoming the master, they would get overthrown by theor apprentice and overall make the Sith stronger each generation.

@@kimchirice3664 but that rule is flawed. Most apprentices would either assassinate or team up with their own apprentices to take down their current master, and in turn masters would kill their apprentices before they grew strong enough to become a threat to them. As a result of this endless cycle of backstabbing, the Sith only grew either weaker with each generation or more fearful of death. Take a look at Palpatine right: he killed his master in his sleep (he can use whatever excuse he wants, the truth still remains if he thought he could kill his master in single combat-as Bane intended when he created the Rule of Two-he would have. The guy easily killed 3 jedi council members in less than 5 seconds), and for the most of his life as emperor he looked into multiple ways of becoming immortal

Carstea Florentin In short, that's the basic problem with the Sith, whether they operate under the rule of two or not. They're too power hungry to work together, or build anything long term. Everyone wants to lead, nobody wants to follow.

All of the awesome TCW characters. I know we had the show but c'mon; who wouldn't want to see all those characters together in live action? Especially ventress, she is one of the most least talked about SW characters for how cool she actually is imo.

The relationship between Sidious and Vader is somewhat..erratic / random. He sometimes is treated as a pawn, a mere killing tool to solidificate his command over the galaxy and impose order before liberty. Sometimes he threats him like a ''son''. This relationship is, at the end, very deep and complex, because it shows how even after knowing about the survival of Luke, Anakin still had conflicts. He wanted to eradicate Sidious for his deceiving, but at the same time he has doubts of it, he senses that he was the man who gave him a second chance when his own peirs didn't covered him (The Jedi Order, according to their point of view)... He is a very tortured soul, has to confront his own desires against the ideology of the empire (order against liberty), his thoughts toward Palpatine and a somewhat sadness that resided on him quietly with the years. For me, Vader is a conflicted ''Grim Reaper''. A killing machine who doesn't knows if to continue with a predestined duty or if to follow his own path. The interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences of Sidious must be at the clouds. He can understand very easily how he feels and how others feel, which gives him the edge when manipulating. What a monster...

I think Palpatine would do anything ANYTHING to get Vader to obey him. Vader was not a tool like the others rather Palpatine had actual value for him and that is an honor not alot of people have. Now I wonder what would have happened if Vader didn't lose at Mustafar and how this speech would have gone.

The sad thing is, Palpatine probably did think of Anakin as his son. Its just, his idea of what a father would be was so twisted and warped. The thing is, if Luke had turned in ESB, Vader may have perpetuated the cycle of abuse bc Palpatine was the closest thing he had to a father. Obi Wan was close, but he ultimately was more like a brother.

Part of it was as punishment for failing as an apprentice in Palatines eyes. Another part was keeping him weak enough so that he couldn't overthrow him. Eventually the Emperor did offer him a better suit, one that would eliminate his pain and remove the restrictions on his movements. Vader denied the offer, saying the constant pain and restrictions made his hate (and his connection to the dark side) stronger. I know this is a little weird to say, but I've always found the Sith philosophy on 'the rule of two' to be kind of...sweet? Whenever a Sith lord is overthrown or betrayed by their apprentice, they almost always express this profound sense of pride in their student. I suppose that they find comfort in the thought of having raised an even stronger lord than those that came before. The Sith are known for their arrogance, but when their time is up, they tend to adopt a surprising kind of pragmatic humility. In this way, they achieve their own kind of 'immortality' through their direct lineage. From a writing perspective, it gives the dark side a surprising degree of humanity without diminishing their villainy and I always love to see little moments like that in this franchise.

I remember watching the scene in Episode 3 where Anakin is face down in the dirt on Mustafar missing most limbs, and palpatine shows up and is asked what he would like done with him by a subordinate. Palpatine almost looks distraught for a second and then commands them to give him medical attention. I think palpatine isn't as psychopathic as people believe he is. "We Will rule the galaxy as father and son" That is really tempting to hear, and I think most people would take that offer. To be in a position of power with your new father at your side who actually wants you to be with him. Who would never betray you. Vader found a better purpose in life in Luke. It's why I love star wars to begin with, that level of character depth and drama that is not too over the top. I think the prequels did well to flesh out anakins character as well. George had anakin have a constant fear of losing his loved ones... and when he lost everything during order 66, he was a complete broken mess and a shadow of his former self until Luke came along to give what he thought was a second chance to have a loving connection again. To gain back what he tragically lost through Luke and even Leia (Vader was definitely going to go after her as well if Luke turned). Disney pretty much made vaders existence and redemption and Luke's accomplishments pretty much pointless with the sequel trilogy. It's so sad how Disney just treats the franchise like a cash cow and platform for crazed sjws who most likely never cared for star wars in the first place. I met so many liberals in college who never even seen the movies or understand the love for it... so that says something. No appreciation for good storytelling and lack of care for the fans is where Disney lucasfilm is at in this age.

Yes Palpatine is an extremely Dionysostic person. Having fun yet spreading terror without considering anybody at all expect for aristocratic or powerful ones who are worth to kill or be guided like Jedis and Vader. He is obsessed with ruling things, have a special degree of understanding and manipulating people. Encourage both himself and the other in his way, secretly, with a pretty mutually satisfying, twisted dictation. If Nietzsche is alive, probably he attacks on George Lucas by defining him "Christian" or "slave" morality advocater; by showing "ubermensch" Palpatine as evil... For Nietzsche, the notion of evil is a slave invention and differs from "bad". He does not believe in objective morality neither he does not believe in a never changed, bold reality of "good" or "light". Everthing is relative, depends on person.

I think Vader was not punished by Palpatine because of two reasons. A) Vader was the emperor's apprentice and tool and the better Vader became at the Sith ways, so much the the better for the Emperor. B) Palpatine was totally secure in his power and never believed Vader could defeat him.

The strength of the Rule of 2 is that it forces a Master to always keep growing stronger, to always be on guard, to NEVER become lax. And that in turn makes the Apprentice grow stronger, thus breading stronger sith> Palpatine's mistake, ironically, was the same mistake Mace Windu made. Windu stated in the novelization that he had been so focused on Palpatine he had forgotten about Anakin, not noticing til it was too late his 'shatterpoint'. The same with Palpatine. He was so focused on Luke... he forgot about Vader. And how Vader was born out of Anakin's love. And so too would that be how Vader died.
