Palo Verde Trees of the Sonoran Desert - Arizona Tree Profiles
Palo Verde trees are one of the cornerstone tree species of the Sonoran Desert. Like the Mesquite and Desert Ironwood, the Palo Verde is also a nurse tree for many other plants and cactuses in the desert by providing shade in the summer and warmth in winter. They are also nitrogen fixing legume trees that help enhance the soil life for all plants and cactuses around them. There are 4 types of Palo Verdes that are found native to Arizona (Blue, Foothills, Palo Brea, Mexican) and there's a hybrid variety (Desert Museum) that can found throughout many of our Arizona cities and towns. The Native Americans used the Palo Verde's incredibly nutritious seeds as a staple food in the months of May and June. Local forager, Cactus Kelly, joined me to discuss the benefits of eating Palo Verde seeds. Lastly I cover two champion tree Palo Verdes, which are the largest of their kind found to date.

I took some seed pods from a wild Palo Verde tree in the Southern California desert. I got 7 to sprout a couple days ago!

Crazy. I just stumbled on your channel while trucking through yesterday. I wanted to learn about the trees I see in the desert. Found the mesquite video..after that I searched to see if you had a Palo Verde video, but couldn't find one. Then you put this out a few hours after that. I was surprised to see it in my feed. Wow thank you for sharing. It’s stories like that that keep me wanting to make these videos. There is so much incredible knowledge to be had that’s taking place in the natural world. I highly recommend checking out the Desert Ironwood video I did. Ironwood, mesquite and Palo Verde are the cornerstone tree species of the Sonoran Desert, so the majority of trees you’re seeing while you drive across Arizona and parts of Cali are one of those 3. are they fire tolerant?
Is the desert museum palo verde the only one prone to breaking in monsoon winds? I was going to plant one in my yard, but am hesitating for that reason. Is any particular palo verde stronger than the others in that regard?

Based on anecdotal evidence of several decades as a landscaper in the Phoenix and Tucson area I would say that the Foothills Palo Verde would be the strongest. Part of that is because it’s a slower grower so it gives the trunk the ability to withstand the branch growth. You can still plant desert museums but just make sure you prune it correctly. They’re great trees

Some comes from me but the beginning of the video came from Laura Murphy of U of A. Some of my other videos come from Stan Tekiala's "Trees of Arizona Field Guide", and another huge resource is "The Natural History of the Sonoran Desert" by the Arizona - Sonoran Desert Museum which was written by a collection of professors and scientists. This is a non-profit KZread channel so the premise of the channel is to share with others what I'm learning from experts. I am by no means an expert.
