Palmyra before the destruction of ISIL 🇸🇾 Syria

An oasis in the Syrian desert, north-east of Damascus, Palmyra contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world. From the 1st to the 2nd century, the art and architecture of Palmyra, standing at the crossroads of several civilizations, married Graeco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences.
Following the capture of Palmyra in Syria, ISIL was reported as not intending to demolish the city's World Heritage Site (while still intending to destroy any statues deemed 'polytheistic'). On 27 May 2015, ISIL released an 87-second video showing parts of the apparently undamaged ancient colonnades, the Temple of Bel and the Roman theatre. On 27 June 2015, however, ISIL demolished the ancient Lion of Al-lāt statue in Palmyra. (It has since been restored, and is in storage in a Damascus museum until it can be determined that the statue can be safely returned to Palmyra.) Several other statues from Palmyra reportedly confiscated from a smuggler were also destroyed by ISIL. On 23 August 2015, it was reported that ISIL had blown up the 1st-century Temple of Baalshamin. On 30 August 2015, ISIL demolished the Temple of Bel with explosives. Satellite imagery of the site taken shortly after showed almost nothing remained. (wikipedia)

Visited in 2000 for four or five days. Unbelievable. Surprised they did not show any of the underground burial sites. I was lucky enough to get to see one of them. No public entrance... but the Head of Antiquities allowed me to visit one of the underground sites. I was for a brief moment shocked and disappointed. For a moment I honestly thought I was looking plaster copies of the originals. Wrong. The site had been undisturbed for roughly 2000 years and it simply looked like from yesteryear! One of the most profound experiences in my life. Now? All gone. All destroyed. An the man who showed me these wonders? Killed.

It is unfair to generalize and say that Islam is responsible for the destruction of this part of Roman civilization. The evidence of this is that all of the antiquities in Syria have remained intact since the advent of Islam, through multiple Islamic eras over centuries. They were respected and preserved until recently, when a small number of people who deviate from the true concept of Islam came to destroy this heritage in an attempt to distort the true image of Islam.

Glad it has been destroyed. Yes, its history, I get that, on the other hand its a place of disgusting idolatry, kinda funny God used ISIL to wipe this idolatry shrine from the face of the earth. Its an abomination to God, therefore it had to go.

@@ice2002 The worship of Baal was the worst thing that plagued the ancient israelites. The bible prophecied, that the jews would be without their homeland for a long long time because of the idolatry and because they did not accept their messiah. Its all there in the old testament. Hundreds of years before it even happened, it was already prophecied. Its a form of Gods judgement over Israel. And Baal worship was a huuge deal in the bible if you read it. They used to sacrifice human babies in these temples. Glad its gone.
