Wild at Heart is brilliant. I'm happy the judges at Cannes recognised David's genius. The booing is absolutely ridiculous and extremely disrespectful to David.

Palme d'Or is far far far bigger award than Oscar

fact: Roger Ebert was one of the people booing. [source? he said so himself on David Letterman.] and yes, he was booing the David Lynch movie.

I'm not surprised, considering how passionately contemptuous Ebert was at the time toward Lynch and his work. I checked out Ebert's website, and of the six Lynch film reviews there, he only gave above 2.5/4 stars to two of them: The Straight Story and Mulholland Dr. (he gave both of those 4/4 stars and put MD on his Great Movies list in 2012). Though MD is one of my favorite films, and I can't speak on TSS because I've not watched it yet, IMO most of Ebert's opinions on Lynch and his work were so off base that they would just be kind of amusing were he not considered to this day to be one of the most well-known film critics in the U.S., even years after his death. It still sticks in my craw how some people still cite Ebert's scathing review of Blue Velvet to back up their belief that Lynch is a sadistic misogynist because of what Isabella Rossellini's character went through in that film, even though in that review Ebert basically said that directors exploiting and degrading actors is ultimately acceptable to him if the final product was a film he thought was "important" enough, like Last Tango in Paris, in which the lead actress had ACTUALLY (not just in Ebert's imagination, as in the case of BV) been sexually degraded and humiliated by the director during production (though I don't know if that was public knowledge at the time). I find that like Ebert, these same people never seem to refer to much, or anything at all, that Rossellini herself has said about Lynch, Blue Velvet, or the character she played in the film...but I digress.

@@Wesleyminaker Do the expressions on the faces of Lynch and his cast suggest comfort or indifference towards the merciless heckling directed towards them? I’ve been to Cannes - even by the standards of the festival audience this is a notable reaction.

Sex Lies and Videotapes, Wild at Heart, Barton Fink, Pulp Fiction... Early 90's Cannes, love Hollywood independent movies! :)

You should give a look to Maurice Pialat's Palme d'Or the critics did the same thing for his movie because it was a controversive movie and his response is legendary, I think it happened the same here just some critics that disagree with it...

As much as I love David Lynch and Wild at Heart I think it is totally understandable to boo a film that wins such a prestigious award while implementing so very much postmodernism. Though the film may be wonderful on its own does not necessarily mean it is what is overall best for the medium of film. Huge fan either way. I think American fans take too much offense to some of the booing I've seen at these awards ceremonies.

David Lynch is of the most interesting, significant and creative filmmakers of history, there is no doubt that he is inimitable and unique; and in my opinion no one has ever dealt with the theme of mystery more profoundly and affectively than he has in cinema. Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead are true masterpieces without a question, however Wild at Heart is a rather weak film, probably his weakest alongside with Dune, therefore I cannot help but agree with the booing folks on this Palme d'or decision.

@@Chinaski1 Many Palme D'or had both applause and booing when announced, it was not always consensual like today with only applause and big smiles everywhere ! Even Fellini winning for La Dolce Vita in 1960 ! Cannes film festival was known for a long time for its daring or provocative auteur films with both fans and haters manifesting their feeling regarding the jury's choices. And I have to say that, in a way, I regret that time...

maybe people thought that La palme d'or would be given to another director ... Lynch was not yet recognized/or well known at this period. Only for "Elephant Man" and "Blue Velvet", and for the people who know him better : "Twin Peaks" and "Eraserhead", which wasn't the case for a lot of people at this period of time... (and others, for "Dune"...).....

Hector Ocasio soderbergh has made a documentary before ... like louis Malle has made 3 short movies before win the Palme d’or. You can win the Palme d’or without be recognized, or knew, for something.... and I repeat myself lynch was not well know excepted for « Elephant Man » and « Blue Velvet ». And I think that he won this Palme d’or because of the hit of « twin peaks » almost the same year... but people can think what they want 😊 (why did they screen the two first episodes of « Twin peaks : the return » in Cannes ? They are against the streaming platerfoms and there is no price for the tv series in Cannes, you don’t find that strange ???)

How do you recognize it's a French hum. To watch a video of this French event, the most important film festival in the world, and instead of appreciating the positive cultural impact of France in the world (for example: creating such a great festival of cinema) using negative stereotypes against France is quite rude. No, i'm not french
