Palliative Care With Billi: Changes To Our Routine | BilliSpeaks

For a more comprehensive overview of Billi’s health, check out the Medical Playlist.
FAQs:
1. What about Feline AIM (apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage)/the research out of University of Tokyo/check out Claire LuvCat?
This is a great question, and there’s a short answer and a long answer. The short answer is this is VERY new research, we don’t understand the full impact yet, it’s not available in the United States.
The longer answer (not as in depth as the long answer) is the current publications on feline AIM are focused on ACUTE kidney injury, and while results are promising in regards to protecting kidney function, it’s a far cry from extrapolating to this being a cure all for chronic kidney disease in cats (especially polycystic kidney disease which is congenital). I’m excited to see where the research goes, but the reality is research takes time.
2. Is Billi on [insert medication here]?
One good thing about being my cat’s vet is that I can adjust her medications as needed! It’s handy during the end stages when she can have good and bad days. Rest assured between myself, Squirrel friend (also a vet), and Billi’s internist we have Billi’s medication down! Not all cats need the same cocktail, so what Billi is on may not be the same as another cat with CKD.
3. How long does she have left?
I don’t know! Progression of renal failure is individual, and based on so many factors. Based on the most recent retrospective analysis the majority of cats in stage 4 did not live beyond ~100 days. Most does not mean all though, and some cats had less or more time depending on their individual factors. I’m focused on quality of life over extension of life, so as long as Billi feels ok we’ll keep going 💜
4. We haven’t seen any updates! Is she ok?
In general, no news is probably good news. Or at the very least static news! I’m focused on Billi over content creation right now, so it doesn’t necessarily mean she isn’t doing well if I don’t post for a bit.
Again, thank you all for the overwhelming show of love and support. It means more than words can adequately express!

I want to thank you for putting the @BilliSpeaks channel up as it helped me get through some of the most difficult times of my life. There were weeks when the only thing that made me smile was a new Billi video that had landed in my feed. My only request is that you leave the channel up permanently so we can all remember and appreciate Billi. 😢

It can’t be easy to coordinate it with your working hours, but you’re still giving Billi the best life a cat can have, and I’m certain that’s what keeps her motivated. Love the low stool, the spring toy and the outdoor space for asserting her authority over passing birds! That’s one happy cat, and of course that’s what matters most.

CKD? Yes, it all depends on the stage. My cat sibling had early CKD around 14 years old, but it did not become severe until ages 17-18. The fatal factor was both developing co-existing diseases of old age in cats--hyperthyroidism, heart failure, and cancer.

I completely understand how Billi's life has changed with CKD. In 1996 my eight year old cat was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure. She had only 20% of one kidney that was working and the other one had completely failed. We were told to take her home to give her time to say goodbye to our other cats and she would likely be gone within a week. Well, the vet didn't know our Cleo very well! She lived another TWO YEARS on 150 cc's of subQ fluids every night and a plethora of meds. Every night I would make her subQ time her special "spa and mom" time. I closed the bedroom door, warmed her fluid bag in a sink full of hot water and she would find a comfy spot on the bed for us to cuddle while she got dripped. I would brush, scritch, and massage her while her fluids slowly turned into a small bubble under her skin. The day I had to make the decision to let her go was heart wrenching. She was ready, but the rest of us weren't, even tho we knew she was getting tired of the meds and getting a 20 gauge needle jabbed under her skin every night. When I see videos of kitties like Billi who are going thru the same battle my heart breaks for them and their humans. It's not easy to deal with it and juggle all the different meds while also making sure she's kept comfortable. Give Billi some love from me and let her know I've told Cleo to meet Billi when she decides it's time for her to cross the Rainbow Bridge. 💔 (((HUGS))) to you for all that you're going thru. I've been there and I know the struggles you have keeping her fed, hydrated, and medicated. ❤

I am so so saddened to hear that Billi is at this stage of her life. It's never easy when a companion pet has brought us such joy and at times, more love and honest understanding then any human can. Watching Billi and her use of these buttons made me want to give this a try with my new Maine coon kitten. And just like Billi, he LOVES his plastic springs! My thoughts are with you and Billi during this time. Her humor and goodwill was such a joy to watch as she spoke her mind through the buttons. She has brought a lot of giggles and fun in her communication with you, to a lot of people out here! THANK YOU BILLI, and to you for sharing her accomplishments, YOUR accomplishments with the buttons as a way of communicating on a deeper level with our feline companions. It has been a real eye opener and hope for me in understanding my furbabies, and their needs and desires better. Bless you both.

I want to do something with this grief and with the good energy that Billi (and Billi's mom and dad) has given us. The good that Billi has given us has made a community that should not die when Billi crosses over the Rainbow Bridge. I am also stunned that many of us also have stage 4 kidney disease and are going through the same process. It would be nice to be able to do something positive about this with the time we have left. Everyone has a different approach to this, of course, but for me, I am going to create a prayer app for people to pray for our animals when they are sick and leaving us, and for us when we experience the same. I believe our beloved pets wait for us on the other side and help us when it's our time to walk over the Rainbow Bridge, the same way we helped them. I believe we can continue to pray for them in heaven and help them and let them know we still love them, the same way we always have. Maybe there are buttons in heaven that will allow Billi and others to speak and give good things to all of us down here. Advances in technology have shown that cats grieve and cry with tears when their owners are away for long periods of time (infrared cameras in pet monitors cause tears around the eyes to glisten), which means they feel love, sadness, worry and grief. They make families and protect their young to the extent of altruistically sacrificing themselves when needed. Animals have also shown that they feel guilt, which means they know the difference between right and wrong. If they possess emotions, morality, and certain virtues, they must be eligible for heaven. Here on earth or in heaven, we can continue to be with our beloved pets. Love never dies.

Now only Kahli the Destroyer remains. She’s very healthy and still young at 5 years old. She gets vet exams every 2 years until she turns 10. Then it will be every year to stay ahead of any illnesses she may develop with age. May Billi’s last weeks/ months be filled with love and joy.

My sweet Boo, at twelve, will most likely outlive me. I’m sad that Boo will have to acclimate to a new mama; hopefully a kind one who’ll love her as I do . She’s mostly Boo. Boodha when she’s calm and meditative and cuddly , and Boodica when she’s raising insurrection around the apartment. She inspires me to hopefully get buttons soon for my cats -- both very young (one is about 3, the other is 1 and a half). I had an old cat before them who was 19 when I had him put to sleep, and I gave him a similar number of medications his last few years to keep him comfortable.
