Final was not fixed, we should learn to accept defeat graciously. Whenever we loose, it's fixing. Wasim Akram captained the team brilliantly in that world cup.

And by that logic, final of 2003 world cup was also fixed because India played superbly throughout the tournament but was heavily defeated in the final. Exactly what happened to Pakistan in '99 final.

I think Waseem Akram alone responsible for losing 96 and 99 World Cups.Pakistan teams were so strong that we should have won three World Cup in a row.Match fixing destroyed our cricket.

Lets come straight to the point. Akram bht bra jawaari tha subko pata. Imran khan like any other pakistani minister is also a very corrupt person. Imran obviously never wanted Pak to win another wcup, as it was good for his political career as he would remain one of the biggest contributor to Pakistan after winning 92 cup. What is your take on that and how true was that? Infact imran has already honored wasim with the best bowler or whatever title. If you are in contact with imran then I understand you wont talk about this ,lol. But this idiot wasim has broken the hearts of many millions of Pakistani supporters. He deserved to be hanged which would had also served as a lesson for the future corrupt players.

How was it that we won all league matches and qualified for the semifinal but lost the league match against a weak team Bangladesh? And how the Bengalis celebrated coz that is when they got their test status which was to be given if they defeated one major team in that tournament. It was like independence once again for them and they denounced Pak in their jubilation not knowing the victory was handed to them in a plate by some traitors in our team. We could have won another world cup after 7 years but I think for these money minded ppl honor takes a backseat and all that matters is money, money.and money.

Even though the Qayyum report is rather frivolous, Conclusion #5 is a clear indictment of Wasim Akram when the reports recommends him to be removed from captaincy and be replaced with a person of impeccable character. I drove long in cold of the night to Naz cinema in Fremont California to watch Lords 1999 world cup final on big screen. The moment I watched the two Pakistani openers start walking in to bat and learnt that Wasim had won the toss, I was so disgusted I told my family this match is lost even before the first ball was bowled. It is now clear the decision was made to ensure best possible seaming conditions for the batsmen to get out, whether willing or unwilling. People of Pakistan need to debar all cricketing activities for at least 10 years, bitter quarantine for bitter disease.

We probably weren't very keen on winning as well- not just the 99 world cup but the one after that too. Had we won either of the two cups, cricket would have taken off with major corporate sponsorships and much better facilities for cricketers. The players who bet on matches in those days ruined two generations of cricketers who came after them. We are still trying to heal from those grievous wounds.

Nida Butt par in 1990 everyone play with these strike rates like 80 is a very good in 1990s even wakahtula wasti played with 60-70 strike rate in World Cup. I think he should be played because he was experienced player and deserve sport in team and 1996 quarterfinal he played a great knock as well against India .

Absolutely correct analysis.... Mohinder Amarnath, imran Khan, aravinda desilva, yuvraj singh, James Faulkner and Ben stokes.... They are all great batting all rounders who won world cups for their countries...

Two world cups pakistan lost due to wasim Akram as in 1996 he didt play himself againest India and Saqlain was not in playing eleven either...great mistake.Akram wasted a great team and in 1999 Shoaib was in such a great form he could have bundled out Aussies if pak would have opted to field .Pakistan and South Africa were the teams who deserved to win that cup.

WC 1999 was such a heartbreak. It was the best team of Pakistan in a century.It was also their best jersey . We crumbled under pressure. Toss was crucial so was our decision to bat first on a wet wicket.

Justice Qayyum report clearly mentioned these match fixer will never be given any job in cricket playing circuit of Pakistan. @MrFalcon2001 at that time, match fixing was so prominent that it infested nearly all teams especially India, Pakistan and South Africa. Fixing was a bit less for Indian international players but it continued with Pakistani players unfortunately.

I remember Pak ex-Captain and coach Mushtaq Muhammed (he was coach in WC too I think or just there with team), he once said (after the WC was over) that 'when I heard Wasim won the toss, I was over the moon and felt we will now def win. Then I heard the commentator saying 'Akram decided to bat first', my heart just sank, I knew we threw it away' (something along those lines). To the day till I die, I know it in my heart, there was something fishy about Wasim's decision to bat first!

I believe that 1999 Pakistan WC team was the best team ever represented Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup. It had depth in batting and bowling with key all rounders like Abdul Razzaq, Azhar and Afridi in the team. Though, not sure why Yousuf was dropped and why Wasim elected to bat first.

Actual fact is, in 1999 Pakistan batting totally collapsed before Australian bowlers. First bat or Second bat does not matter if you score minimum runs for winning and bowlers take wickets. Why Waqar Yunus was not playing in 1999 final?

Wasim Akram`s stubborness and one-dimensional strategy really costed Pakistan very pathetically.After listening to all the anecdotes from Aamir Sohail I think that he must`ve been appointed as the new skipper particularly for the World Cup event.Obviously the top-ranked sides of the world like England and Australia produced introduced numerous batting all-rounders including the likes of MCGrath,Gillispie,Shane Warne and etc and that`s where we still lack in.It is a powerful lesson for us ahead of the next World Cup editions.

@Syed Ali Iqbal You said "Australia produced introduced numerous batting all-rounders including the likes of MCGrath,Gillispie,Shane Warne" Warne might be close enough to qualify as a bowling all rounder (not batting) at best (and a slight case can be made for Gillispie, not a good one though)...while MCGrath was as much of all rounder (Batting or Bowling both) as was Kapil Dev a 'Phaast Bowler' :-)

I typed it by mistake but from where I've seen of Shane Warne he had the ability to score tough runs for Australia against any team.

Aamirbhai you forgot that Inzy scored 75* against NZ in world Cup 99 and 91 against australia.. He was playing well in finals too but got a very bad decision to get out

Interestingly Prasad has got Aamir wicket 4 times. 3 after Qf 1996 And Aamir has got his wicket once in 1994.

In 1999, South Africa was most favourite team. When South Africa was lost in Semis, Pakistan was favourite over Australia. But performance shown in final match by Pakistan was shocking.

Great analysis Amir Sohail, I always admired your game, and enjoyed watching you play. However, I can never forget or get out of mind the all over beaming smile of Wasim Akram after losing the final. No losing Captain can smile that way after losing a World cup final. As a viewer I would have accepted a defeat, if the team had played to their best and gone down fighting. We can easily tell as a viewer, when a match is genuinely lost, or thrown away for personal gains of individual players. I honestly stopped watching cricket games after that, and have watched highlights only recently during the T20 World cup held in UAE this year. After a long time, I saw the fighting spirit in the current team, that was a pleasant change for a Pakistani viewer.

Yessssss.....I hate Wasim Akram to date for that match. He seemed drunk TBH! Match seemed fixed.

Sir, we can never forget your innings in Robin Round stage in Benson & Hedges World cup 1992 where you scored a century against Zim, & 76 against Aus, 62 against India. Thanks to Imran Khan & Duckworth Lewis method to get us into the semifinal.

Wasim Akram didn't have capacity and capabilities to be a captain..biggest missjudgment of Pakistan cricket board..no dought wasim was a Star cricketer .but under someone else's mentor

Aamir bhai should hv played that World Cup and opened thiroughout the tournament with saeed but as you hv mentioned yousuf he became unfit before supersix round I think during or right after Australia’s league game

Making Wasim Akram Captain was the biggest mistake by Pakistan in the 90's. They tried to make him the next Imran Khan and ended up destroying the side. Had they stuck with Javed till 96 it would have served them better. Or if they didn't see Javed as a prospect for the 96 world cup, they should have just gone for Saleem Malik or Rameez Raja and backed them till 99 world cup. (Instead they had so many captains in the 90's, each member captaining 10 matches or so in cycles)

If there were so many flows then how you managed to get in to final

Agreed I was there to witness and willing SA to win, it was a great game of the tournament the whole ground erupted in joy as the score got tied and everybody thought SA had won. But the result was disappointing for spectators and SA went home on a long flight ✈️. That win made AUS world champions

I witnessed 1999 world cup semi final Aus vs SA at Edgbaston was the best match of tournament resulted in a tie. And SA were unlucky not to go through to final, the other semi final pak beating NZ in an exciting match, to be the first finalists. So the final was Pak vs Aus, and this pak side was better side then the winning world cup team in 1992, but their performance was of dismal, handing the world cup to Auses. And the burden of blame goes on the shoulder of captain waseem Akram, who happens to be my favourite player, had no planning and bad captaincy in batting orders, and team combination, were not able to put up a fighting score.

1996 and 1999 both world cup in both world cups Pakistan team was good team but unfortunately due to fixing Pakistan lost

11:15 Pakistan played with three specialists bowlers in the #CWC92 final because Imran had to select 8 batsmen to do the job of 5!
