Pakistan Travel Thal Desert Road Trip
Pakistan Travel Thal Desert Road Trip. I want to be fascinated by the desert. a Giant land of distant horizons, blue sky, and Complete silence but there is fog and the temperature is around 12 degrees celsius. so it seems difficult. I am driving through the Thal Desert. My destination is Noor Pur thal. I want to taste Tandoori Mutton Tikka. I am driving on Khushab Muzaffargarh road. I will travel from Garot Chowk To Roda then a link road leads to Noor Pur Thal From Roda. It is 30 Km. I will return back Garot Chowk via Noor Pur thal Sargodha Road. First time I read an article about Sultan Mutton Shop so I decided to visit it. The link to the article is this tribune.com.pk/story/2171997/... Finally, I have reached the Sultan Mutton Shop. One Kg Tandoori Mutton Tikka price is about 8 USD. People are planting Eucalyptus even though a shortage of water in the desert. Our Government departments also planting Eucalyptus trees. even they know the water shortage issues in the country. local trees are best than eucalyptus. The Thal Desert is located in the Province of Punjab on Sindsagar Doab. It is a vast area between the Jehlum and Indus rivers south of the Pothohar Plateau. It covers an area of about 305 KM long from north to south and 110 km wide from east to west. It resembles the Cholistan in Punjab and the Thar desert in Sindh geographically. It is divided into six districts Khushab, Mianwali, Layyah, Bahkkar, Jhang, and Muzzafagarh. Some of the main towns of the desert are Mankera, Roda Thal, Mari Shah Sakhira, Mehmood Shaheed, Dullewalla, Shahi Shumali, Chowk Aazam, Jiasel, Jandan Wala, Noor pur Thal, Rangpur, Hyderabad Thal, Shah Wala, and Piplan. There are many tribes in the desert namely; Tiwana, Sial, Mammak, Bhachar, Baghoor, Rahdari, Jhammat, Cheenna (Jutt), Gahi, Aheer, Lashari, Wagha’s and Awans, etc. The locals of Thal basically speak ‘Seraiki’ but Punjabi is also spoken in the desert. The settlement pattern in the area is influenced by the geography and agro-ecological setting. Relatively large and nucleated villages are located in the fertile and irrigated areas where agriculture has been developed extensively. On the contrary in the sandy desert which is popularly called ‘Bairoon’, there are smaller, scattered, and humble habitations of a semi-nomadic population. the houses mostly built of mud or bricks. Most people are small landowners including some leaseholder tenants who depend on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods. Major crops grown in the area are Gram and wheat depending on timely rainfall. Yield is very low due to poor soil and unpredictable rain. While most villages were connected with each other through sandy pathways which usually disappear during wind storms and difficult for strangers to find out the right pathway This poses a serious danger for strangers to get lost in the deep desert. The animal population has been decreasing over time as the grazing areas are shrinking as compared to 20-30 years ago. It is because of increased settlements in the desert area and resultantly diminishing vegetation. In the desert area, farming is dependent on rainwater, and underground water though available in limited quantity is brackish. However, some with financial resources had installed their small tube wells at the depth of 125-150 ft. run on diesel operated engines and use water for irrigating small plots of land cleared from the sand where they grow wheat and other minor crops. Thal Canal also irrigating the thal desert. High-speed winds blow resulting in the shifting of sand dunes, I want to lose in the deep desert but not this time.

Tarar Jee, Chaudhri thanks for showing bit of Thal area. This is triangle or wedge or heart shaped semi Arid land. In Chenab Chiniot, Rabwah area we used to get dark dust storm from Thal then rain after that clearing every thing. I worked in most Pakistan and seen much World, now Allah knows how many year left. This land between Mianwali , Khushab to Multan, about 50 years back was developed for farming or given to farmers. This heart is heart of Pakistan and could have given wheat and water melons to whole Pakistan. The planning was poorly done instead of making a Grid pattern with minimum undevidable farm or cultivateable area of 25 Acres. This place is spoiled. Two river feed this area aquifer and tube well and gride net work of canal was better planing. People cant think of more than that shrub in desert. Plantatation of Euclaptus tree is useful for its medicinal oil and wind blocker with less water. Salt water is shallow due to wind blown salts. The 200 million people just sit on Dhernas and useless talks. Still time to to plot this area on grid for canal and tube well irrigation. In Australia I saw similar area with wheat plantation. If This land was in hand of American or Canadian, you could have seen heavy machinery and big plow farming for miles snd miles. Pakistani way of live is waste of time. In Thal grow water melon and sugar cane and in villages put juice making & preserving plants also make 25 or 50 acre farms. Plant trees use this surplus 50 % of Pakistani population to plant trees like NDVP style 3 months traing & diploma program with welding ,tin shelter building, driving and agriculture mechinery operation. Of course this job is for those hanchoes who are called politicians or some open minded Army nation planners. To me they are wasting this land to low energy people who cant plant road side trees or pave road, hire some Italian or Canadian contractors to lay grid roads and concrete water piping . Thanks for showing part of it, as I only Settlite googled this area. I gave few comments in you journeys with hope some one get light other wise it is same filthy towns with water standing and low grade construction of bricked walls.

Pakistani brothers, Eucalyptus is not good for land, it drinks up and dries water from land, leaving no water for other plants and trees or even animals or humans. Don’t plant eucalyptus widely.
Thank you for very nice pictures. I am brazilian and follow your adventures.
