I was thinking... how about using only high staining colours? Like cobalt blue and that orange that sits like glue on the paper just thinking to use it.

Ali Cavanaugh is an artist who works exclusively on aquabord with watercolor and her work is amazing. I recently took an online workshop she did on it and she suggests lots of light layers and that the patchiness eventually stops and it becomes velvety smooth.

Meister Eckhart - 'Be willing to be a beginner every single morning.' Do you know what?... I LOVE this video... It shows me that even the very best artists can struggle. We always see the best of the best from artists. All their struggles just are hidden away. This gives one encouragement to keep at it. Dont give up. We all have to find our way, persevere. I know many paintings I've put aside and let sit for months until i give myself the push i need to complete it. And then i look back and think ' WOW, I painted that'. All my struggles, I've learned more.

Haha! I was surprised (and delighted) to see you try this. Believe it or not I just finished shooting a video about Aquabord yesterday. I think you did pretty great with it but you're so right it is a real battle. My video gets edited today. I'll give your video a shout out in my comments once its posted. Like you, I don't think Aquabord is so great for traditional soft watercolor blending techniques. Very frustrating. I want to give it a few looser mixed media tries at some point where lifting is a major technique in the piece. But still, always a pleasure to watch you paint, even when you're frustrated...😂

Hi Steve, it's good to see you here. Thank you! It sucked the joy out of painting in watercolour for me. I see value in using it for something like fur, when you can lift out highlights easily and for portraits, when you can scrub out your mistakes and start again. Thank you for the shout out......very much appreciated. I look forward to seeing your video.....when my internet comes back on.

“A new struggle” 😂. Your painting is still beautiful! As a fellow artist, I know that if I don’t enjoy what I’m doing, I don’t want to do it, and I have to drag myself kicking and screaming to finish it. It would have been a dream come true for watercolorists if it worked as well as paper!

I've learned that this "bord" is definitely not conducive to painting with the same joy we normally experience by painting on cotton paper. My thoughts, as you struggled (highly commendable)...I wonder what would happen with gouache? It would probably work best for very sorted, solid colors and perhaps less water? A no going back approach? I don't know...more questions than answers for me. But I'm sure it would not suit my style nor temperament. You are a Saint and though you struggled, you persevered, and still came through with a beautiful piece. You are a blessing, Louise. Thank you.

Thank you so very much for sharing your struggle with this aquabord! I've actually just gotten a big one to try out and, had I not seen your video, I'm sure I would have been so frustrated I'd have pulled all of my hair out. I've only used these with graphites, conté, and charcoal thus far. I would have done exactly what you were trying to do, as if it were paper. Thank you for the warning. Knowing I'll want to treat it more like water soaking into a clay pot rather than cotton paper will go a long way. I'll do my highlights last, once everything is dry... Maybe try varying amounts of water I'd never try with less than 300 lb. paper, maybe I'll try working "backward" & experiment...And yes, I concur with the others. You've still done a beautiful job of it. 💜

Hi Louise, I painted on the same board years ago, it was a full size board. I had the same problems. I couldn't get the background paint to stay down when I added a second wash. I got so frustrated I stopped and went to bed, I painted a lot at night. I woke up in the night with the idea of dropping layers of paint and lifted the board moving it up and down then side to side letting the paint move in a way it painted it's self. I paid a lot for the board and didn't want to throw it away, so I struggled on. I hated the board and never bought it again. My favorite paper is Arches cold press. Good for you to complete the painting, it is beautiful. I love your videos and have learned a lot from you. We never stop learning. Thank you 😊

In the kindest and most gentle ways what I better understand from observing the "battle" is, for me, that though there be some application for the clay board it certainly is nothing like that for which I am working toward. Thank you for the admirable example of taking up a challenge and, to the end, being willing to learn the ways it commands. As I am engaged in learning how to best translate what I see in the watercolour medium I am going to accept that riding two horses in one ride is beyond the scope of my capabilities (and my level of patience). So it is that IF and WHEN I reach the point of it being worth the while to pursue I shall opt for adhering fine cotton watercolour paper to board. That point is so far in the distance that I cannot see it for the horizon line. It is here I find the encouragement and support to keep my eye on that horizon line and to begin to stop thwarting my learning curve by judging my inch by inch progress when I am a remedial level (at best) student. Thank you Jeanne. Go slow and enjoy the journey. It's a long one but it's fun. I don't think I'll ever truly master it but I'll have a great time trying. 💕

Thank you for sharing! Well, I've painted on watercolor ground surface that has to be like paper, but turn out not! I had the same problems you faced on this "battle" 😂😂 and I was painting a portrait. I've learned along the way, that if you want a clear and not patchy result, less in more... that means less brushe strokes you use less you disturbe the paint and more likely you'll have the result you're aiming for. I've changed my watercolour technique on that surface and borrowed an oil painting patchwork technique alla prima style, because I paint with oils too, and it worked. The colours were vibrant even they were less pigmented on the first look and I used almost a little amount of water on my brushes. To smooth the harsh edges I simply used a dotwork technique with a very small brushes. I like the realism on portraits and I work with smooth watercolor papers but this kind of surface do not fit well. I've created other few boards with watercolour ground and I'll try other techniques on them to help me to understand better the use of it in my style of painting. I've started a new subject but doesn't looked like I wanted, so I layered a thin coat of acrylic transparent gesso and painted it with watercolor style but with acrylics paint. They look plastic but turned out nice. The lifting problem is not new for me, I've experienced gouache watercolour like, painting style and it was fun, the portrait turned out fantastic! Sorry for the little poem of mine...thanks again for sharing you experience and knowledge in every video you upload🖖🏻🤗🖖🏻

I have some lifting preparation from w+n I must try it to see if it does the same,I have glued watercolor on a board ,I felt it did the same ,but not to that extent the aqua board may be treated in the same way with a lifting preparation.

For watercolor I use Crescent Premium Watercolor board, #5115, hot press, 30" x 40". I cut it to whatever size I need. They make cold press also. I live in the US and deal mostly with Dick Blick for my art supplies. These people have it all. Like yourself, I tried to find a replacement for Arches watercolor board, and this is what I found. Wet the back when your painting, to help with buckling. Enjoy your show.

You’re a trooper that’s for sure. I’d have quit by the second flower. Pigment moving sideways and behaving according to its weight and dryness is a huge part of the happy interaction between the watercolour pigments we choose and our beloved pure cotton papers. I didn’t think clay could act as cotton and I have a bit of aqua board still stored unopened in a drawer somewhere because of this. Your painting is lovely despite the surface because you’re a talented watercolour artist. It hurt to watch you struggle so hard through it, though. I’d say the board is ok for a paint-by-numbers style maybe, or I don’t know, but it’s not cotton and I wouldn’t take on an assignment to try and make it so, or to spend effort to learn about or teach it. That’s my view anyways. Art is for joy. Period. That’s a lesson in itself. New sub here btw. Cheers.🇨🇦🤗

Louise... Your pressing on is inspiring! You didn't quit... And the results are stunning! Love how your "out of the box" thinking brought you to using an eraser...! Any way, what a great lesson on learning how to use a different surface then what your comfortable with... yet still making a beautiful outcome... Be encouraged... You worked masterfully! Also... Qq Could this type of board use more of a " flushing" or "rinsing" of water before you begin? Like placing it under the faucet for a good bit, then letting it dry, before painting...? Or would it not make a difference on this surface...?

Louise, I recently had the same experience with applying a special gesso to stretched canvas so that it would act like paper. Paint lifts right up, wetting the surface was worse. The piece was to be a practice for a commission. Thank goodness I had sense enough to try it before hand.

I have had the same issue with watercolor ground on canvas. Have you ever tried ox gall on Aquaboard? I think I may try it to see if it helps. But, all in all your painting turned out beautiful. i love it!

I just watched this because I'm in the middle of a large board myself and having the same issues! I even tried painting clear ground over areas to keep the layer from coming up. Unfortunately, this only works to a point. Also, Primatek & granulating colors leave a dirty mess (if you don't just leave them alone) after first layer, and salt doesn't do much either. Very frustrating!! The only successful board I've done in the past was using watercolor pencils with a touch of water. Your piece still looks lovely, despite the struggles! :)

I understand how you must feel it is a failure, but oh so many would give their eye teeth to have their work be as good as your failures 🤣🤣. It is a fantastic composition and wonderful use of light and colour. It is truly a really lovely piece. You just have that frustration layer of icing on it. Check out Daniela Werneck. She paints almost exclusively on aqua board. Her work is Jaw dropping and oh so full of heart wrenching and heart warming story. Having her be a part of our water colour society in Houston is an honour. And she is SO nice! You have inspired me to give this aqua board a try. I like a good fight. Scottish blood in my veins never dies. Thanks for posting.

One thought... would a couple of coats of Gesso help to prepare the board better? and i wonder if the first layer of water should not have been done as a whole, but as you painted each part, wet it then and get the colour on while the board is wet.

Is aqua board and illustration board the same? If they are you might think of shifting your ratio of paint to water, making your paint thicker and using a dryer technique I not sure this will help it just a thought. When I have used illustration board I am using an airbrush, where the paint is a little thicker.

Thanks for the tip Steve. Maybe that's what I shoud do- use less water in the paint....good thinking. Aquabord is different to illustration board. It's a masonite board with a clay surface on it.
