Painting Water and Reflections

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Painting water affords all manner of wonderful opportunities to get wild with the brush and palette. Here's my simple impression of a lakeside scene - very peaceful and chilled landscape.

I wonder how someone painting so loosely and randomly can come up with such stunning effects. But Steven surely loves his hake brush.

One of your best, IMO. I tried it, since I've procrastinated over three of my own projects for awhile, and it seemed like it would suit the paints I had left. (It's very cold and also hard winds, and I have a two hour walk to the art material shop.) I screwed up even more than I usually do. Too much paint, too wet paper. etc, etc. This time it didn't only turn into something slightly different, but to something completely different. I decided to save it by embracing happy accidents (thanks Bob Ross♥) and making something different. So it's now a rainy autumn scene. It's ok, and I'll have to wait until tomorrow to judge it, as usual. Anyway it was lots of fun. I should paint more often. Best regards.

Believe me when I say many of these watercolour demonstration videos don't turn out as I intended. Sometimes I just go with the flow and pretend I know what I'm doing! As long as the end result looks ok I look like a genius!

@@StevenCronin Lol, 😄 . I like my paintings. I often add detail or change things slightly, days after. But I'm happy enough with the results. None of them has that particular quality which I liked in your original. But they're pretty and convincing pictures. I kinda think that hitting that special, is a matter of statistics. It only happens sometimes.

I’ve watched you paint for a while now and I’ve never been disappointed. Awesome work Steve. Do you go by a photo or do you just see these scenes in your mind. This is one of my biggest obstacles. If you use photos where do you find them or maybe they are photos you have taken? Also, are you making any new podcasts?

Thanks Brian. Occasionally I'll paint from imagination but I find they tend to come out very similar. For that reason I tend to prefer a photo. Sometimes I'll use my own photo but other times I'll use one I see on the internet. The recently walking videos replaced some podcast episodes but I will be making podcasts in the future. Happy painting!

Beautiful painting. I was wondering how you prepare palette? You seem to be able to get a thick and creamy consistency to the paint even though it looks like it has dried on your palette or is it fresh from the tube for each session? Thank you.

Thanks Jim. I use the paint dry on the palette so they are like large pans. I squeeze the paint from the tubes and allow to dry overnight. This lets me whizz around the palette really fast without picking up blobs of paint.
