Painting Upholstery... Is it Worth it?! | DIY Painting Upholstered Furniture
In today's video I'm sharing with you one of my DIY furniture fails lol. I'm showing my process in painting upholstered furniture, where I went wrong, and what I would have done differently in the future. I'll be using chalk paint from annie sloan to paint the second hand upholstered chair in the video.

Thanks for such a candid and honest video ! You really helped out a lot ! One point i like to share, and that is the point of the dried color rubbing off. Years ago when i was helping people paint their interior walls, we used fabric softener to clean up the tools....or rinse the tool lightly and coat it with fabric softener and wrap it in plastic to re-use the next day. Meaning, the FS was a retarder/ solvent for the paint which would lead to your problem of the color rubbing off after drying. It sounds also that the FS turned the water-based paint into a somewhat oil-based paint .... which needs a lot longer dry time. i will defiantly leave out the softener on my next project.

First steps for second-hand furnishings, imo: check thoroughly for bedbugs, then steam the heck out of it to clean and disinfect as best as possible. A half way step between this and reupholstering could be to sew a slipcover. Easier than it looks because you can literally pin and cut each piece (with seam allowance) on your piece of furniture as you go. Using a fabric with a bit of stretch (and making the pieces a bit smaller) can ensure an easy snug fit.

I haven't done this kind of DIY - but from my experience if you used acrylic paint it wouldn't pick up when wet later on? also it can be diluted like watercolor so you could build up the density of the paint in the fabric slowly, not making rough patches

  • @Diana-wg1tm

You're supposed to dilute the paint with water about 1/3 paint and 2/3 of water.maybe even less paint !! Of course you're supposed to spray the material first with a spray bottle of water to wet and the material. I've only done this one time and it came out great. You can only paint it to coats but you got to let the first coat dry and then lightly sanded with some sandpaper just to knock off the rough edges. Then you can paint it again once it's dry but you can only really do two coats

Has anyone used that product. I am going to give painting a try before I reupholster. • @ambergeorge4528

Using the wax seals it and it doesn’t transfer that way. Also adding more layers will make it thicken up and become more like leather. It has to fill in and become more like the texture of leather.

It can be like it has been reupholstered if you do it properly. First I would eliminate the fabric softener from the mixture and then I would add just a little bit of paint to a bunch of water. And it's very important that you use chalk paint not chalkboard paint. I suggest Rustoleum chalk paint. You can't just use any kind of paint.

@@annemurphy9339 Yes! I'm currently painting one now, from a cream to their Chester color. There are lots of YT videos using their paint line on fabric, too. You'll do one coat with half water, half paint. Sand with at least 220 grit in between coats, second coat is 1/4 water and 3/4 paint and third coat is full paint. If you're going from light to dark like I am, you might need a 4th coat. Good luck!
