I just wish more people would explain their process on blending the different tones. There are plenty of videos that show how to blend but never in an actual real life example.

😊 I try to mix intermediate tones instead of doing too much blending on the canvas- that way you get a blended appearance automatically but still keep the structure without getting smudgy. I paint a section from dark to light and as I move from a darker step to the next lighter step, I work a little bit back in to what I’ve just painted to kind of merge them together a little bit.

Thanks! Yeah I tried to paint a picture of my mom but most of her face is in shadow. Anyway it looks like I’m trying to make my moms skin tone look racially a lot darker. Like she looks heavily tanned rather than just shaded

For my teaching demos, I usually do studies of old master paintings. This is a study after the 19th-century artist Jules Bastien-Lepage’s painting “October”. (I usually put the original artist in the description of the video, but for shorts the description is not so easy to find.)
