    You rock -- however edges of rocks need a slight lighting bevel, which would help it look less CG.

    Dang Ben this is killer! Do you think design work like this could translate into something more along the lines of a game like fable? Or do you think that type of game should lean more into the hand painted texture feel?

  • @bensimonsen6824

    @bensimonsen6824

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, this could totally work for Fable. But I would go through and simplify the rock and its gritty-ness to match their more stylized look.

    That is a great question! In fact, I have been organizing my personal texture folder to make all of them available soon. It really depends on the subject matter, but if I had to choose one it would be grunge textures. They can pretty much be used for everything.

    do you feel as if you would be restricted by the rock texture that you chose? clearly you shaped and molded the rock to what you wanted but i think if i tried the texture would look out of perspective or something

  • @bensimonsen6824

    @bensimonsen6824

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I chose that texture for a reason. It had elements in it that I knew I could use to influence the design of my rock. For example, if I was doing a sandstone type rock in the desert I would have gone with a different texture. That's why I keep a large library of rock textures to choose from. To answer your second thought, the key to getting the rock to look right is the way you light it. The texture I used did have lighting information in it, and I made sure that was correct when I placed it in there. If I had turned the Texture upside down where the rock was being lit from below and then I lit it from above I would have had some problems. I hope that helps!

    It's hard for me to fully grasp the lesson, as my traditional art is good but my digital art is just terrible. I have a hard time making digital art do what i want it to, half the time it makes my lines way shakier than they would be on normal paper, and it will completely change the colour im using at random and mess up my already bad digital art. I wonder how I can try to translate this lesson into "traditional" terms...?

  • @ZTRCTGuy
    @ZTRCTGuy7 ай бұрын

    If you're going to photobash in a highly detailed rock photo that's gonna make things easier alright, and I know concept artists need to work fast, but it's not ''painting a rock'', you're only painting in the details and some lighting...

  • @ynlaid

    @ynlaid

    16 күн бұрын

    To correctly paint over photobash you also need a high skill. Photobash and matte painting are a way to make things more realistic, because it would be problematic to paint such a stone in detail only with your hands. And its not easier way, its another level of details.

  • @ZTRCTGuy

    @ZTRCTGuy

    16 күн бұрын

    @@ynlaid Agreed, but the title of the video is ''painting rough and gritty rocks''. If you really want to learn to paint rocks and teach others how to do it, you shouldn't be photobashing.
