B.I.N shellac is the only thing for varnish imo,it stops peeling and reduces chips.Other primers don't do this, especially on a staircase and trim.I have done a LOT of houses at this point, going from varnish back to white, also there is a lot of extra work like filling sap and knots also a lot of caulking.

Thanks for this. I used Brewer’s Albany ‘Super’ Primer Undercoat over keyed varnished wood and then oil base Dulux Trade Eggshell. It has been cold and a bit damp but I can scratch the coatings off with my thumb nail? Have I made a mistake or do I just have to wait a few more days for it to cure? With many thanks, Alex

Hi Steven. Very informative videos. I just wanted to get your opinion on the Zinsser BIN and cover stain please. I painted some doors and architrave in our house. What I've found is that the paint has chipped slightly in a couple of places on the corners of both where the kids have hit off them with their toys. I've done all the proper prep work but I just thinking the Bin might be a bit brittle for areas that take knocks. My question is, what would you think of 1 coat of cover stain and 1 coat of Bin (for the knots) and then the undercoat and topcoat? Would the cover stain be more hard wearing and help with paint chipping slightly at the corners, in your professional opinion?

Thankyou very much, to be honest i have never used the cover stain. i only started to use the zinsser products a couple of years ago. Zinsser bin i have used for water stains, exterior spot priming and covering varnish before undercoat and top coat.I think that any paint would chip jf hit hard enough, nothing is 100 percent. Also it does take at least 30 days for water based undercoats and top coats to fully harden. I did some reasearch on google here is what was said. Zinsser Cover Stain provides durability and adhesion on glossy glossy surfaces. It's especially good on raw wood or MDF removing the risk of swelling that you could get with the water based 123 primer. Zinsser BIN is the toughest with the highest adhesion although it does have the highest price tag.

Great video. My house has (had) all brown varnished doors, skirtings, dados and staircase. I have had a painter and decorator in to paint all the woodwork white. I had 14 doors on my landing and he used a Johnstone's equivalent primer and sealer. I know he didn't sand down, as I suppose that would have cost a fortune for that many doors and woodwork., He read the label and it said it creates a really good bond, however, I only have to knock any of the doors or skirting for it to chip and I am often having to get the paint out to touch up the chipped bits, which is annoying. I am decorating one room at the moment on my own and have sanded down all the skirting boards and the door, so that will be interesting to see what happens when I have finished. I need to get a stain blocker and primer. You recommend the Zinser Bin, shellac version, but what do you think about the Zinsser 123, water based version. I don't want to get the wrong one. Your advice would be very helpful. Going to have to live with what the decorator did and he is a friend's husband, so can't really complain.....

The zinsser bin is a shellac based paint that dries fast and enables you to get on. and you can use water based undercoat and top coat, the 123 is water based and wont seal it, you can use oil based undercoat and top coat, it just means waiting a day beetween each coat.

Hello. Could you please give me your best advice on choosing the most durable water based for my wooden framed windows? I sanded off old layers of yellowed gloss leaving behind a thin layer of gloss which I can now see the wood grain through. I now have trust issues finding the most durable water based paints for my interior. I want to be 100% sure I am choosing the right paint system so I don't have to re-do all my efforts ? The zinsser bin is a shellac based paint used to block any staining or yellowing bleeding through the white top coat when using water based undercoat and top coat, The advantage being it all dries fast, the bin does smell a bit, but not for long, the water based undercoat and top coat has hardly any smell. Or you can use oil based undercoat and top coat, you would need to give it 2 oil undercoats then a top coat. You would have to wait a day inbeetween each coat as it will take a day to dry, and all oil based paint smells lol.
