    Hi Derek, It can vary depending on how well the paint is flowing, generally I do put just a dash of turps in when rolling. For door frames etc, I use enamel straight but after a few frames I will add just a dash and I mean its only a small amount. I'm like you I don't like to add turps but the paint also needs to flow and some times you can get better coverage thinning the paint slightly because the paint will flow better.

    Very short mohair sleeves are best i find,foam are ok if your going to lay off with a brush and a little thinning of the paint makes life easier and helps even the finish.Very good videos.

    I use foam rollers for doors, they don't really come in nap sizes but there are a few on the market, some are a little thicker then others. The one I use would be classed as a short nap and they are cheap, I can throw them away when finished.

    Enamel DOES NOT need turps for it to dry properly. If you add turps it will thin the paint, if the paint is thinner it will dry a little quicker. If paint is applied uneven or too thick it will take longer to dry, the idea is to apply an even coat so it dries evenly. Turps can be added but its added so the paint flows better giving you a more even finish. Laying off a door with a brush after rolling is another technique, I have painted many door like that but a good roller finish is better.

As you press out the paint you are also pressing out the air bubbles within the foam. All you will see is many small bubbles. Use a microfibre roller for best results.

    I tried this and could see uneven sheen after it tried with semi gloss. I found out that you're supposed to keep a wet edge, which I don't think was mentioned in this video. I think if you go over the strokes as many times as he did the paint will become too dry on spots and you'll see that when it dries. I'm paying a painter to come out and show me exactly how to paint the door. It's not as easy as it seems.

    Next time try to let the paint tac off a bit then roll out the bubbles, they should flatten out. Be careful not to thin the paint to much and make sure you lay off very lightly. Also this method works best with oil based paint not as good with water based paints. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

    Often you can just use lots of filler and fill the hole until the fill is flush with face of door. I assume the tape you want to use will go across the hole witch will create a raised section and will most likely stand out when door is painted and that's why using tape is not the best idea but it can work. Rolling slab doors is one thing but rolling colonial doors is another. I was painting a number of colonial doors & it was not so easy getting this paint to cover as it was kinda a thick sticky latex.paint & so it was that I discovered for myself, I wiped the door down with a damp sponge 1st just prior to immediately painting it' & holy cow it spread like wildfire easy as one, two, three! It still covered good no streaks as it was only needed to be dampened. Now. don't add water in the paint itself but rather use a wet sponge only to dampen the surface a little bit before painting it. It's also a good idea to use flat cardboard under the door over the threshold. Keep your paint can, roller pans, & every other kind of accident waiting to happen contained in cardboard boxes of size to fit inside that could possibly make disaster of any sort. A step in time will save you nine! so take the time & prepare.

    I followed the method using a Microfibre 4mm NAP which was recommended for painting doors. The final result was very textured and feels like sandpaper. I think the issue is that the paint is too dry for the number of rolls. There was no issue with painting the door trim using a brush. The trim was had a smooth finish. The paint is water base satin. Comments appreciated before I sand the two doors and start again.

    Using water based paint and oil based paint is total different when it comes to rolling doors. Oil based paints stays wet longer so you have more time to work with it, water based paint dries quicker so you haven't got mush time to work with it. I'm not a fan of using water based paint on doors because in never looks as good as oil based. With water based paint make sure you apply a nice wet coat and when rolling it off make sure it still looks wet and not dry. The mistake a lot of people make is not applying enough paint. I will roll and tip off when the temperature drops to around 20C. I assume the hot weather of 27C and above in Melbourne is causing the water base paint to dry much quicker. When tipping should I be putting the 3” paint brush in paint at the initial start of each half of the door. Your video showed you dipping the paint brush once in the paint for the top half. When you rolled the bottom half you advised that the bottom of the door had been cut in. Is this all what is required for wetting the brush before tipping the bottom half? Thank you

    If it’s been at least 2 years since the wall has been painted & dried in. But you decide to re paint over with same paint colour, should you still back roll? The reason why I’m re painting it again is because I had some wires pulled out from behind the wall because I’m getting a TV set up & had to paint over the Filler Which was just a small section on the wall. However when I painted it over again with just a brush it has come of with a few marks & looks un even I did use sand paper before hand as well

  • @howtopaintinfo

    It's Greg not Derek, It all depends on the paint and different roller sleeves, sometimes there is nothing you can do about the splatter. Use shorter nap roller sleeves for flat walls and longer nap for rough render. Don't thin your paint out too much or it can become to thin and splatter everywhere. • @howtopaintinfo

    mrdeecov Try a 4 mm microfiber roller sleeve, the first few doors you paint will have some hair or fiber's come out but after that it should only leave a few hairs here and there and you can remove them with your finger. Practice on the insides of the doors or an area that is not going to be seen as often. Microfiber are easier to use but if you want a smoother finish then use the foam roller sleeve.

    I have never liked acrylic for interior woodwork and have only ever used it twice by request of clients. I know painters that try to push it for interior woodwork, its easier and quicker to use then oil based so they are only trying to make their job easier and are not thinking about whats best for the client. So yes I agree acrylic gloss for interior woodwork sucks but I still prefer acrylics for external surfaces.

    +Hamza Halal You will need to prime or seal all the patched areas, apply an undercoat to the entire door then you will need to find a paint that matches the other doors. Depends on who painted it last but doors should be in a semi gloss or full gloss. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe, Thanks

    If you are after speed then yes a fine nap roller is a little quicker, if you are after a finish that has absolutely no hair or fibers in it then a foam roller is best. Regarding bubbles, if you add turps to the paint you will get more bubbles but they will settle down, it may take an extra roll over to get rid of them.

    So you roll over multiple times, each time with less pressure. Is this to remove the roller lines/marks and have an even finish? What type of roller do you recommend ? Whenever I use rollers, they seem to leave little fibres in the paint :/

  • @howtopaintinfo

    @howtopaintinfo

    8 жыл бұрын

    +sypher0101 For doors either use a microfibre or foam roll sleeve, foam rollers won't leave any fibres on the door and a microfibre roller will leave lots of fibres on the first door but after that it should only leave a few here and there. The reason for rolling over the door multiple times is too flatten out the rolling.

  • @howtopaintinfo

    Oil based is best used on inside and water based on exterior. Oil based paint will go chalky in direct sunlight but can be washed to bring back some of the colour. That's why water based are best for the exterior.

    Hi...Would you tell me how many coats to do on doors after priming?

  • @howtopaintinfo

    @howtopaintinfo

    10 жыл бұрын

    Depends, when you say priming do you mean it was an unpainted door and you primed it or was it painted and you primed it? A lot of people call an undercoat primer, so lets say it was a new door then you would need to undercoat then apply one or two top coats, most manufactures recommend two top coats. If your door was previously painted then the primer should be ok as an undercoat but do read the label on the paint can to see if it is ok to apply top coat over it. If so then apply two top coats over the primer, some primers are more absorbent then undercoats so you will most likely need two top coats to achieve an even finish.

They are painted already - it's a 20 yr old house so I'd say its the original paint on them. I haven't done anything yet but I have tubs of primer & undercoat. Which one should I use under the 2 coats of enamel? Cheers :-)

    @howtopaintinfo12 жыл бұрын

    Yes you are correct, as I said I only use a dash of turps and generally there are only a few bubbles which will disappear. Each time you roll over the door the amount of bubbles should decrease. I know of guys that will roller one side of the door then the other side, then they will go back to the first side and give it a final roll over. This way they eliminate all bubbles. Its a bit hard doing this if you are repainting existing doors due to moving drop sheets around.

    i coulda rolled and tipped 3 doors by the time you done that one side. PEOPLE THESE tips are very rough and i wouldnt recomend it to a novice. Its faster neater and a proper job to tip the enamel off with a brush, playing with it rolling over and over, wrecks the finish loses the shine and creates a nasty hammer finish. BTW always do door edges first, and make sure door is well dusted down first. DONT USE THIS AS ADVICE

    This video is showing how to roll a door, not on how to roll a door and lay it off with a brush (that's another video). Also at the end of the video you can see the final result and there is nothing wrong with it and it's obvious that you didn't watch or listen to the video, at start I do say to cut in edges first.

    As a novice painter, I prefer it if the painter in the how-to video takes his time a little. If you would make a video doing 3 doors in 4 minutes like you boast you can, then it's worthless to me because I wouldn't be able to copy that and get a good result.
