Painting AND Unboxing a Retro Chaos Warrior for Warhammer the Old World | Duncan Rhodes
Ойындар
This kit from 1997 was ground breaking upon its release and was the first time you could get a true regiment kit on plastic with different options. Although the Rogue Trader kit was out first (RTB01) this kit broke new ground and paved the way for plastic kits we know and love today. In this video we open a sealed box and show you what's inside plus we paint one as they did back in the day.

Age of Sigmar, near the end of 1st edition. A start collecting Seraphon. With Kroq Gar and Grymloq, ooh no sorry, a sunblood on carnosaur and 8 knights and 12 warriors. Lovely box :) at the time cheaper than the carnosaur alone lol

1997 from a model train shop I got my first white dwarf and a chaos warband (I can’t remember the name of the box) that came with some beastmen, some ratmen and a single chaos warrior (or lord, not sure what they called it, I was only in grade 4 after all haha)

40k, early 2023, old termagaunts, they were a pain to build
Hi Duncan. I’m going all misty eyed. I got into the hobby in 1989, my first white dwarf being issue 122. I lusted after the Terminator Deathwing Captain miniature and finally after 34 years I finally got him and painted him in the colour scheme from all those years ago. This is a fantastic channel and one that evokes so many happy memories. Thank you!

Me too, I recently found some unpainted minis from the period and now painting them, the Chaos Marine renegades with heavy weapons. Mad color schemes originally.
I just love the naive charm of these older GW sculpts. Beautiful.
You really are a master in beginner friendly instructions. Love how you explain the steps, why these are important and give very easy instructions on how to apply them. In the meanwhile showing that the end result is so much more than the sum of its parts and that you really dont have to be an artistic talent to make a model look good.
They don't make kits this fun anymore. I miss them.
Such a nostalgia hit from this vid. I loved my old Chaos Army from back in the day. I loved the interchangeability of the regiments too. I had a Nurgle Chaos Warrior Regiment made up with bits from the Zombie Regiment.

I LOVE retro stuff. Finding something like that is quite difficult and expensive. It makes you put your money where your mouth is and show how much you are into the hobby of miniatures and miniature painting. But glad you did this one. Cheers for retro miniatures!

Oh dear... I remember those, they were so cool back then, I still have some of them completely unbuilt, still on the sprue! The most amazing thing was usually they would come with a mutation sprue, to make like possessed or give more variety to the regiment.
Fantastic Duncan thanks for sharing with us 👍 this takes me back. I started in 86 all those years ago with a handful of miniatures. My first full regiment was Bugmans Dwarf Rangers, beautiful Regiment of Renown. Some are still kicking around in my army now lol
I remember this kit being great not just for building on their own but combining with other kits like Chaos Marines, too. Such a shame that they started moving away from kits like this somewhat once the next edition rolled around and they went back to monopose again 😭

That's not accurate at all, they came out with all their best ever fully posable plastic kits in the next 5 years after that original plastic Chaos Warriors kit and never really moved back to monopose with Fantasy as it ended before they did that with modern kits in AOS and 40k.
Ah yes those where the good days, 1997 would of been my 2nd games day, spent the night at my local warhammer store, playing games all night then getting on the coach at 5am for the trip down to Birmingham. I actually used these chaos warriors for parts for my khorne bezerkers. I also miss the free choice you had on how to build your model, any part would fit any other part in the kit. Nowadays the way the sets are done you can't really mix and match body parts now. I also really really really miss those prices. Where full army sets would cost you £45. Now that's just a box of 5 terminators!
Currently painting up a unit of these bad boys! Although I'm making them Nurgle, but the principles the same.
Rhooo... 😊 really, after more 30 years in hobby, i love old school minis and paint style !

Had a lovely nurgle c w army that sold for a song. This boxset formed its foundation. The memories...
I have a regiment of these guys. Love them to death. Warrios of chaos was my first ever exposure to warhammer back in 97 or 98
The halberdier version of this regiment was brilliant too, metal halberds really looked the part
I imagine 1997 Duncan would've never imagined painting his miniature with his very own paints 😁
The greatest regimental box ever made. Chaos Warriors reached their peak here
I remember saving up money from my summer vacations in 1997 or 98 and buying a regiment of chaos warriors with halberds. The same kit just with metal arms for the halberds. Atrociously painted of course but I still have them! Great job Duncan !
A tenner for a full regiment of infantry, what a time to be alive and collect warhammer !
I, too, went Chaos for my 1st Oldhammer army back in the early 90s. Chapeau. My paint job wouldn't stand up to scrutiny these days. Think the 12-year-old me painted everything with a 2"brush straight from pot😂. Purple and black. Nice to see.how good they could have looked- only had to wait 30 odd yrs!!
Duncan? CHECK! Retro Model? CHECK! Warhammer Fantasy Battles? CHAAACK! meesa happy

I remember putting that kit together as also one of my first kits. Good times!
i remember picking this kit up as my first ever Warhammer kit. I got it home and built them and remember thinking how detailed and well made the models were. this is a real nostalgic feeling :). Amazing video!

Thank you , DRPA . 🐺Loupis Canis .
This brings such good memories back me.
That Chaos Warriors regiment is a really cool boxed set, I wish I had picked that up back in the day, but no one played Warhammer at my games store and I was heavily into playing Battletech. Those minis look like a big bucket of fun to paint up.
This is actually pretty funny to me because the main reason I looked up your channel was for your glowing weapons video in order to spruce up this exact unit that I found in an unmarked box in my closet. I distinctly remember how this particular box set was game changing at the time and I had to buy it.
In 1997 I started with Warhammer Fantasy and played the Empire. My first models were a regiment of hellebardiers (monopose) from a comic shop. After one year I switched to Chaos, because Chaos didn't need so many miniatures because their units had a high point value. And I didn't need to spend so much money after those plastic boxes (Warriors, like shown in the video, and Knights) came out. For the Empire I had to rely mainly on metal miniatures (e.g. three Bihanders in one blister; knights came in one per blister) which was not cheap at all.
The Old World has truly been the first time I've had such powerful nostalgia. Must be because GW have been doing a great job of hyping it up, not cos I'm getting old

Blooming algorithm i missed this one!! But if there redoing these bad boys for the old world im defo getting into it!! They look fantastic 😮😊
Oh, man, that brings back some memories. Good vid!!!
Crazy to see these sprues. It's hard to imagine GW making a kit where all of the pieces fit together perfectly fine instead of accidentally getting the slightly different looking leg or arm and now nothing fits and it's all falling apart.

All the work and confusion from misprints and part IDs to make what is essentially just over designed monopose dudes.
Wow. What a fun watch. Great nostalgic figure. I remember the chaos boxed set with the figures all in the same static pose holding the big battleaxe. The only real way to give them any real individuality was to paint them in different colors while maintaining that chaotic feel. What great memories.
I've been loving the explosion in Warhammer fantasy content around the Warhammer KZread sphere. I hope people keep making videos and interest in this game stays high
Love how much work you put into even the rank and file troops. Each miniature an adventure.
There something special when old kit get unboxed, as it was meant to be built, painted, and played with

Agree 100%
Lovely painting and brilliant result! I have such fond memories of that kit! I had a chaos warrior army made up of them models, painted red with black trim. Ah, good old 90s! :) Cheers!
I was able to learn the sand-pva glue mixture method of basing when I first started this hobby in early 2010s before Citadel Texture came out. It was more creative, you could use any paint colour for the ground to be in. It's good to see a classic model like this Chaos Warrior been painted in 2024. Looks good.
Your skill and talent sicken me, Duncan. I love it 🤘
Damn… Duncan’s been into the hobby two years longer than I’ve been alive…
I got into the hobby in 1994, during a trip to visit relatives, I stayed inb the old bedroom of my cousin who had some pre-slotta Dwarfs on the shelf. My first visit to GW was a few weeks later, I had an intro game of WFB with one of the staff and bought some paints and a blister pack of Saurus Warriors, which I still have! But it was the Ultramrines Dreadnought that really caught my eye and so for Christmas that year I got the 2nd Edition 40K boxed set and never looked back - funnily enough I have only just got around to painting the Gretchin from that starter set, and even though I've completed 30 of them, I've found another 20 odd still to do!!
7 hells I feel old. I was working at GW when this came out. I remember putting this on the shelves in the shop
I love the old hunchback warriors!=D While the updated models are waaaay superior, these guys have such a charme! They really capture the whimsical and cartoonish time from 5th edition, before the setting got way darker and the miniatures got a bit.. well.. better(?). I stopped playing during 6th edition, but I'm currently fixing up my old Warriors of Chaos army and I was buffled by the huge amount I have of those Warriors! 108 in good condition and around 6 with missing parts! I totally forgot that I had so many and its more than I could ever use in a battle, but damn, its a sight to behold! Around 40 of those warriors and 10 knights aren't painted yet, so I was thinking about a different sheme, maybe I will give the copper armor a chance!
I got into warhammer fantasy around 2002 and it was right as these models were being phased out. They were one of the first regiment boxes I bought (with the 6th edition box art) and the newer warriors just dont compare, imo. Excellent paint job and it makes me want to pull mine out of the pile of shame. Thank you!
I use these models as my Chosen. I love them.
This was my first army two, although I allied with Nurgle demons and beastmen too. Never managed that quality of paint job, though! But my very first models are from around 1993, and were three metal Imperial knights for Epic 40K in a blister, which I wanted for a game I was creating and because they were just grand and characterful little models.
So, Duncan's been in this hobby for about as long as I have been alive. Neat to know. My first mini was a trio of Ultramarines that came with a handful of paints and a brush that was... Adequate. Still have those models around somewhere. These old school Chaos Warriors are the business though. Love that colour scheme in particular. Would probably look just as awesome on their newer, more upright brethren.
This was a really fun video. Great job as always Duncan, model was amazing at the end.
Nice I still have mine too! I remember lining up all the units was a pain, had to paint the order on each base so they fit side by side.

Painting and unboxing? That's a special talent to paint them BEFORE opening the box :D
I love the retro painting tutorials
love the oldschool minis
Man, this takes me back. I ended up using the torsos and legs for my LatD for the Eye of Terror campaign. Awesome models for the time.
OMG, it was October 11th of that very year, I started collecting and playing Warhammer & 40K
I'm an 80s and early 90s painter. Shocking to see that even in 97 the miniatures were getting bigger. The size of them now has put me off coming back to the hobby,
@MrSelkies
6 ай бұрын
Why? The bigger size is so much better. More detail on the sculpts, easier to paint, really looks awesome on the table, what's not to like (other than increased prices, which may or may not be related to size)?
My first ever box was a box with chaos warriors with metal halberd. So this really bring som memories back.

Beautiful paint job👍 These were the models that got me into Warhammer Fantasy and were my first army! Btw, your Chaos Warrior tutorial video from your GW days is still (I think) one of the best Warrior guides even today. And you should deffo try an old skool paint job on a new Warrior 😊
What a sensational find. And you know what else is sensational, Duncan? Your complexion. I think I speak for all us men when I say I'd like to see you make a video on your skincare regime.
This was the first Warhammer boxed set I bought - sorry to be a 'trainspotter' Dunc but the one you have probably dates from after 1997 as the original ones had black internal boxes, I think with the same lizardman/Bretonian facing off from the front of the 5th Edition boxed set. I think it was probably the first plastic army regiment boxed set GW released - they also released a set with metal halberd arms. I pre-ordered the halberdiers, and distinctly remember being phoned by the Mail Order Trolls -at home- to tell me that their release had been delayed for some reason. True story.
Oh, nostalgic kick!

I nabbed a few of these guys while back second hand very enjoyable little models
Would be great to see more Old World tutorials in the future, esp empire state troops or greatswords, or even the reiksguard knights.
the first Warhammer thing I ever bought! Didn't really understand what they were for, just thought they were cool looking. Sadly I do not believe I still have them anywhere....but maybe.
I missed these warriors, I came into chaos in fantasy when these guys got updated. Looking forward to the return of old world as I could never convince my play group to take up AoS so our fantasy models have been gathering dust
I still have 20 of those guys that I use for AoS. They were an absolute pain to rank up on square bases. I'm a fan of them tho.
Hi Duncan, I am super new to miniature painting, and I was lucky to get a full set of your paints with your great display stand. I see that there are washes but also ones called glaze, which look similar. What is the difference between the washes and the glazes. Many thanks, Holly
Awsome model :D
The warrior looks like he is doing that shoulder thing when you're really cold
This (or a recut, fully plastic version of it) was one of the first kits I ever built, when they updated the Chaos ranges back in 2002. The updates to the range at that time made them look really out of place, and it was mandatory to assemble them in ranks to make sure they'd actually fit together in the end, but I still kinda like them for their '90s awkwardness. I was grateful for the kit being replaced in 2004 though.
Those Warriors will be much easier to rank on the new 30mm bases. Looking forward to doing a WoC army for TOW using those 90s models! :D
I have that exact set!
Funny thing this box was my first fantasy regiment box, didn't play fantasy exactly. back in second edition there was a chaos daemon world list that was playing a mostly fantasy army with demons in 40k
I love the old Kits, Even though I wasn't even alive then, they are still Nostalgic somehow.
