I have learned from so many other artists who shared what they knew, that if I didn't pass it along I would be derelict in my duty. Thank you for your kind words, Ginny.

That was a joy to watch! I particularly like the foreground tree. I've "executed" quite a few watercolor trees! The colors in this painting blend beautifully and the center of interest is perfect. I'm so glad I came across you channel.

Thanks so much 😊 The difficult part is to change how we approach a painting - the shift from seeing things to seeing shapes and patterns.

I love watching you paint, it's mesmerising and very inspiring. It's great that we can see your pallette too, could you possibly let us know what colours you are using to help us beginners know what the cool colours and warmer colours are.

Yes I can. I use Ultramarine Blue and Pthalo Blue for the cools, and Quinacridone Sienna for a lot of the warms. It is the grays made by combining these that are most helpful.

Thank you very much for sharing this beautiful demo. It is amazing to watch how you build step after step your image, to tell us the story..Did you paint from a photo or from memory ? Because there is a freshness that sometimes we loose in painting from photo. I hope that you make more videos like this one.

Thanks, Hannah. I never paint from a photo-well I have, but only the paintings that fail. Whether I'm working from the scene or from a photo I work out the design and value plan, then do the painting from that. The trap easily fallen into is copying the photo or even the scene before us. I refer to the photo at the end for any little things that could add authenticity to it.

You don't ever use masking fluid? Even for the detailed yellow grasses I've seen in some of your paintings? I'd love to see a video of how you do that.

  • @CarlPurcellArt

No, I never use it. I just prefer the natural feel to the edges if they are just left. Also the tendency is to over use it and save too much. The work getting the edges to look more natural is not worth it. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that.

Ii'll have to think about that. I work almost exclusively from the drawing, whether in the field or at home from a photo. If from the photo, I do a drawing to explore the painting possibilities and to work out the composition. Then I do the painting from the drawing. Sometimes I refer back to the photo for some final details, but usually not.

I agree with your watchers who enjoy your style and learn so much from your thoughtful technique. Your paintings are smile-inducing. But the water sound is annoying and does nothing to enhance your video. It’s actually rather childish.
