Hi everyone! Here is the blogpost that has step-by-step photos and materials used: www.bethanyfieldsblog.com/painting-marsh-landscape/
Bethany I loved this lesson. Not only are you a great artist you are a wonderful expressive teacher. You explain what you are doing and why in a very clear manner. You also have a lovely voice. I have recently moved over from watercolor painting to pan and pastel pencils. I am thoroughly enjoying the process and that's why I love your videos because I am learning so much. Please keep them coming.
Thank you so much, for sharing this wonderful tutorial! ✨️🙏❤ Greetings from Sweden! 🇸🇪
After watching a couple of your videos I thought I'd give pastel another try and boy, am I glad I did. I'm really having fun.

Mr Bergeron, was it a success?
Bethany, You are an upbeat, encouraging teacher and a pleasure to watch. The marsh picture is lovely and I enjoyed watching the underpainting and the following layers of pastel. Your discussion of the light touch issue informative. It is SO easy to fill the tooth of the paper quickly and get lost in heavy pastel that won't accept highlights. Thank you!
You are such a great teacher. I have learned a lot from watching your KZread videos. Keep them coming. I am a retiree stuck in the house because Covid. Need you.

Wow, Bethany, thank you SO much for this video. I have learned SOOOOO much watching it as a beginner. I was feeling SO frustrated with my painting but now after watching this one video of yours, I feel I can make beautiful art. I am feeling tearful now, just typing this. I have a passion for art but I was feeling frustrated and I have learned so much from this video. Thank you so much for posting this free tutorial. You are such a blessing to watch and you explain things so well. I think doing an under painting is going to change things greatly for me. I did purchase some clear gesso that I was putting on top of watercolor paper but I was not able to get many layers in and it was eating up my pastel too quickly. But I can see now by the way you did this painting, that I can use that clear gesso once again (I bought a BIG bottle of it - lol) to save $$ on pastel paper b/c pastels and papers are so expensive and being retired now and with the current covid situation, I have to watch my $$ closely. God bless you for sharing your expertise with all of us. I'll be looking forward to more videos. It is so rare to find real time art tutorial videos. Signing off from Southern California, Renee

Renee this is wonderful to hear! Thank you for sharing! :D
Love the use of glazing, warm and cool colors, and letting the complementary underpainting remain in the foreground. Also enjoyed how you added the building with just a stroke of the roof and more definition of the surrounding trees. Marshes are my favorite subject! Keep ‘em coming 😁

I didn't paint along since it is getting late, but am so excited to try this tomorrow, especially with the alcohol underpainting. I really loved that look. My medium is watercolors, but still learned so much! Thank you. Pastels look like a fabulous medium. The paper appears to be more expensive than cotton watercolor paper. Would you say the pastels themselves stretch longer than a tube of watercolor paint?
@BethanyFields

Hmmm... it depends on how large you paint and how "sanded" your surface. I don't buy pastels often anymore and some are years old! The nice thing about pastel is they never "go bad" :)

Hi Bethany. Lovely tutorial. Can I ask you if there is anything else you can use in place of Isopropyl alcohol in your under painting? Thanks for sharing (-: Marion

You can use odorless mineral spirits! It takes a bit longer to dry. Depending on your paper you can also use water! :D On the paper I use (Uart), water tends to buckle unmounted papers. Test yours before committing. Thank you for watching!
Hi Bethany! Thanks for the lessons and congratulations on your channel. I'm a acrylic painter but i'm really interested in pastels. I wanted to ask you a question regarding making your own pastel paper. I live in Brazil and we don't get a lot of pastel paper options here. Its basicaly Canson Mi-Teintes Touch and Pastelmat, and they are both quite expensive. My question is, have you tried pastel grounds or another type of acrylic ground for pastels on watercolor paper to paint on? I've seen some videos on youtube about that and it might be the easiest way for me to DIY my surfaces, considering my country. But I wanted to know how it compares to the real deal, like Uart / Colourfix papers, in terms of holding the pastels safely, blending and all the important stuff, so I can decide in which I'll invest when visiting the US. Thanks again

I have used clear gesso before to create a surface on watercolor paper. It is a bit grittier and less uniform than a machine made sanded surface. Play with your application and see what you think! ;) Thank you for asking!
Thank you so much for your clear concise instruction and for sharing your talent. Love it and want MORE of the same x

Well, it's because I've worn them down to the nubs! haha. I break them in half and use them until they're tiny. Lots of painting! :D
Love your work. Do you have to use a certain weight paper to use the alcohol?
@lgraham5867

Also.....how do you decide what color of paper to use?
@BethanyFields
4 жыл бұрын
I use sanded papers especially formulated for pastels. Regular papers will buckle with water or even alcohol. I use this oatmeal color most often because the company only makes it or black paper. I do a lot of toning though if I want a different color. :)
Bethany, it is absolutely criminal that you don't have hundreds of thousands of followers. The amount of knowledge you share in one video is crazy. I recommend you to all my art friends but sadly that's not many 🥹 you are so talented

Although your comments was probably made in kindness, I and I am sure others, find comments directed to the appearance of the presenter, highly irrelevant and inappropriate. Please concentrate on what is being taught.
Have you ever done any videos on ways to practice different techniques?

beautiful. Why is it called painting if you're not using paint?
@BethanyFields

A "painting" is usually a piece where the support is mostly covered with pigment (pastel is dry pigment, the same used in oil paints). A "drawing" typically has more of the paper/support showing through. Good question!
What do you think of prismacolor unpasteurized? Lmao pastels

Nice painting video but way, way too many ads. It is so disruptive. I'm paying $5/mo to support this KZread channel and wonder why you have to have so many commercials?

I understand why you and others have ads on your videos but seriously 18 in one video? Sorry but that’s ridiculous

That is a lot! I have nothing to do with these numbers however. Those ads are set by KZread and completely out of my control. Thank you for sticking with the video. I hope you enjoyed the painting.

You can install a youtube ad blocker that stops all the annoying ads. I don't mind one at the start that you can quickly skip by, but 18 is madness.
