Painted Agama, The Better Bearded Dragon?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is definitely one of the best pet lizards you could possibly get, but there is another agama that might be even better. The clown agama, also called the painted agama(Laudakia stellio), is arguably even better. Is this possible? Let's find out by scoring the clown agama based on our five categories to determine if the clown agama is the best pet lizard for you. Could it really be a better bearded dragon?

I spent the entirety of the very first paycheck I ever earned on my painted agama and all the equipment for her when I was 16. Two months ago I lost her just a couple months before the 13 year anniversary of that day. I have never seen another at pet shops, or even an expo, so she felt very unique. In case anyone is wondering. A lot of people that were breeding these no longer do. I talked to the last breeder in my area about this 8 or 9 years ago. I was able to get the very last one he bred as a birthday present. They are not as popular as some of the other lizards so they were not as profitable and he was having a hard time sourcing breeding pairs because import rules changed.

Yes. Yes. Yes!!! I have had my group of painted agamas for 11 years. (one male, 6 females) They are hands down my favorite lizards. (And I have a pet store, so...I have had a LOT of lizards. ;) ) They are very active lizards that love being in a group. I have had two successful breeding years. The key is cooling them down for at least 6 weeks in the late winter. I am in Florida and they are inside our store. In mid-January, I turn off the heat lamp. I keep the UVB bulb on. They do not fully brumate (another thing I like about them. Beardies terrify me every. single. time they brumate. They just slow down. We still offer food, just not as much, and easier to digest food. They still sit under the UVB and get a "little" warmth. At the end of February, we turn the heat back on. Agamas get frisky, and in April- May they start laying eggs in the sand. Three months later you will have the most adorable little muppets! So worth a try if you are inclined. I am holding all of the babies back to keep all the females and have a new colony eventually as I have no idea how old mine are. They are at least 13 years old as they were adults when arriving. They take almost two years to reach adulthood. They are slow growers. The babies are adorable! I would like to add that although they do not drop their tail, they will grow it back. One of my wild-caught females had a tail that was missing the last two inches when she arrived. (Not sure about a tail that has more damage than that though) It grew back in. You can tell it was not a part of the original tail, but it is not very noticeable. Our group eats salad every day and they are NOT picky eaters. They will eat just about anything you offer. Reptilinks, any kind of bug, pellets...doesn't matter, if it's food, it's fair game. They love foraging for food too. We put worms in a ball and they have a game of Agama Ball. That is one of the best parts about owning them. They are so entertaining. I am so happy you made this video! :)

This has been exactly what I found; I deeply enjoy my Painted Agama that I obtained well after I got a bearded dragon, being told that Bearded Dragons were absolutely the best to start with - that they're cool and chill and want to be with you. Mine is absolutely not this way and it's taken 5 years of work just to get him to allow me to pick him up so he can do his soaks twice a week, won't ever drink out of a water dish, etc. He's just not an interactive, or IMO, fun pet. Last year I rescued a painted agama who is absolutely everything I actually wanted out of a bearded dragon; personable, friendly, and handle-able. I was just saying yesterday that I wish I'd known about them before I got a bearded dragon - my only complaint is that it seems to be very difficult to find CB painted/clown/ agamas. I'm sure mine was probably wild caught, and I generally don't like to get those for pets. I hope folks catch on to how cool these are as pets and start breeding them.

Hi Clint! For these videos, - please include ultimate size, weight and how long they live. These facts are also used to determine if these animals would make a good pet for me. Thanks for listening!

We just got a CBB Painted Agama. It is a fantastic lizard. We are going to try to address the availablity/wild caught issue by getting a mate for it and starting a breeding program. Learned about Painted Agamas from your video.

Great to see you finally do a video on these. I've had a team of them for years now. Some of them are a bit mental though, so I wouldn't expect a Beardie experience ( I.e a pet rock). Mine are good to sit for maybe 15 minutes, then they tend to want to "explore" dissappear. Awesome pets though.

I love all of your videos Clint and team. Always nail it. I would love to see a merge of these and a mild care guide. How hot of a hot temp? What size cage is recommended? You touch so close to this and never give anything specific, or just a range of ideas even. Would love an extra few mins to cover that in the care tab. Stull convinced me to order these for my store and maybe even get a pair or 2 and try a captive breeding project.
