Paint Your Own Inspirational Sign!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Inspirational Signs can be lots of fun. Especially if you paint them yourself!
In this video I paint one for myself so you can see how it is done. I plan to do more of these! If you have any questions or comments, be sure to mention those in the comment section!

Awesome work. I'm a sign painter myself. I was doing all that until i started painting gym floors.... All the graphics mascots and the school names on the baselines. All hand painted none of this decals stuff. It seem more of a hobby then a job. All thanks to God!!!!

Max - I'm just starting out with pinstriping, enamel work & lettering...Your straight forward, "go get em" & "Fall on your face...you'll only do it once" attitude is SO refreshing! I cannot wait to see your future videos/tutorials! THANK YOU!

The small mistakes make it look hand done, which is the point. Makes it good!! Only a computer printer can do it perfectly. That's not awesome. Hand done is awesome.

Absolutely loving all ur vidZ I’ve caught so far! Love ur work, charisma, the work put into the vidZ, and the knowledge ur dropping!!! I’m one of those, everything has to be perfect, kind of guyZ and that does pose a huge challenge on yourself every time. I’m definitely going to start every project from now on by saying it out loud, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just awesome! I love it!!! U r a true inspiration my friend!

Where did you grow up? I'm trying to figure out by how you talk. I was thinking Chicagoland, now not sure, definitely midwest. This is my first time on your channel. On my 6th video. Thank you!

Hey Max! I just found your videos last night and they are exactly what I have been looking for! I got a couple cans of 1 shot for my 29th birthday last week and your videos have given me the confidence and the guidance needed to tread the waters. I look forward to showing you my progress once I get a couple brushes delivered to me. Any advice for left handed painters like myself? I noticed I have an issue with my hands shaking badly when I try to pull a line, but I wonder if that's just nerves getting to me. I'm looking to do wood signs (no idea how to prep wood) and now I'm definitely adding metal signs! Please keep up the good work, you are an excellent mentor! Stay safe and have a wonderful new year! - Joshua

@@maxkilbourne3142 I can imagine! I've been looking to get my foot in the door towards an apprenticeship in tattooing and I can only imagine the pressure! However, for now, I'd actually like to do graphic signs of American traditional tattooing. I paint flash already so ideas that I've had were taking big four foot sheets and cutting them up into the shapes of daggers, roses, banners, skulls, etc. At first I figured maybe MDF or wood that has a smooth surface, but I don't know much about that kind of thing. I would assume there's some sanding involved somewhere!

Thanks for these vids max, I bought everything you recommended in the Aloha video. Unfortunately the signs I need to do are block letters, and they seem really difficult.

@@maxkilbourne3142 I've been using a sewing needle to pounce them after printing them out on photoshop. I did buy a pounce wheel but found it quite hard to use. I'm struggling with curves but I've never done anything like this before so it'll come with practice. The only other differences I had to change were the thinners and the magazine for palleting. I tried odourless mineral spirits but the only brand I could get didn't work that great so I think it might of been the brand as I bought some cheap white spirit and it works better. And I couldn't get any of the waxy magazines I could only find the paper ones and the ink was mixing with the paint so I bought an onion board for filler. But I wouldn't of started learning without your videos, have a good Christmas mate all the best from the UK.

Thank you! And the trick to making the pounce wheel work for you is: the background you are wheeling against! Try putting a t-shirt, or other cloth underneath the paper. Nothing too thick though.

Question! I was going to practice on glass. Do recommend something different and should I buy one of those stroke posters or just use stencil to practice? Thanks brother!

  • @maxkilbourne3142

    @maxkilbourne3142

Glass is more difficult to practice on than on a painted surface. It is perfect! Get good at glass and you will improve faster! (Not sure what a stroke poster is.) I would just lay out some letters with a stabillo .... and paint! (what are you painting?) Also, you can practice on glass, and wipe it all off easily, and reuse it!

  • @snatchko9109

Max Kilbourne Thanks! I thought the ease of whipping the glass clean will give me more practice time then prep time with the paper but I will try both! And my goal is to paint and become proficient at just standard hand painted letter and designs for windows, classic cars and wooden/metal signs. A video on priming and base coating metal/wood sign would be interesting in the future.

Hey Max. You're awesome . You mentioned you used photoshop for the font? Is it a program that cuts vinyl stickers? Thank you for the videos Joseph

Photoshop is basically a graphics program. It could work in conjunction with a plotter (sticker machine), but I just print out the letters onto paper and then transfer it to my sign blank.
