Hi, I've had costochondritis for 5 years now and like most people had searched the Internet and forums for any info I could find. It however seemed to be this mystery condition that the docs say would go away, but it didn't. it was so painful and seriously getting me down. Then mid December I found a video on you tube. Just please take a look for yourself. Search. How to fix (most) Costochondritis. There is a part 1 and a part 2. The video made total sense and after purchasing a Backpod and 3 weeks later I have practically no chest pain and can also breath again. My back is certainly getting looser too. Please just take a look, I thought I was stuck with this for life but thanks I'm not. It's working for me so obviously knowing how bad this condition is I want to tell as many people as possible. Good luck .

Watch the videos mentoned above, look at right hand column and I believe the viedos load right after this video. The Back Pod that Dr August sells really really really does work and costs $80 but it's the best $80 you will ever spend in your life. Also, use ice on the painful areas for the pain and this also really really really works. Make sure you are not stressing the chest muscles by lifting heavy objects (which could be anything heavy). Do muscle stretches that are mentioned in various videos by these two gentlemen. It all takes time to heal like everything else in life and there is no magic bullet from Dr. Whitecoat like pain bills, surgery and anything else Dr. Whitecoat can think of. He knows nothing about this muscle/rib malady he might be able to say this is what you have but is of no help in recovering from Costo, but Steve August is of great help and is a Godsend.

DR Dickinson - I've just had similar issues and it's turned out to be a mixture of Celiac's Disease & food allergies. See if you can find a local Naturopath & get them to give you a FULL stool sample (various healthcare will test for Celiacs, but may miss other conditions. You want to ensure the stool sample tests for EVERYTHING if poss). In the meantime, try avoiding Gluten, Dairy & Nuts etc. & see if it helps. It may not, you may have a different problem, but it's harmless to try & may help. good luck.

I got this diagnosed today. Hence I was looking for youtube videos regarding this and jumped here. Well, guys if you are going through this please see a doctor asap. I was going through this from last one year. The onset of pain happened after doing a good workout and yoga. When I stopped, I felt better. When I started again, I felt terrible. So I thought it's just a minor injury and avoided to see a doctor. But today (11/06/2021) my doctor scolded me for bearing this pain from a long time. He advised me to get some tests. And medicines too.. well I'll update my condition after 4 weeks if anyone of you wants to know about my experience, as my doctor said, it might get better. I hope you all get better soon. ❤️

That was so helpful, thanks a lot! Five months ago I got some serious chest pain (which was not helped by a panic attack), went to emergency and nothing was wrong. Since then I had a lot of anxety about my chest, including more trips to the hospital. Each time all the tests came up with nothing. I kicked up my exercise routine recently and started to life weights and run more than usual, one more trip to hospital following chest pain while running got them to give me an echo which concluded that I had no heart problem and it was indeed costochondritis caused by my weightlifting. It's so good now to know that the pain is just a simple inflammation and that it can be managed easily.

Anyway, I have slight swelling there lately so either I have tietze’s or an infection I’m guessing. It’s been going on for a good six months now, at least.

@@DoggoWillink Hey Doggo, same here happens when I play the guitar and I'm hunched over. So I have to maintain good posture to avoid having a flare. Which I usually relieve it by stretching the front neck muscles. Brace your core and tilt your head backwards so you can stretch these front muscles. Scalenes are the muscles if I'm not mistaken. This is just for temporary relief but you have to be really mindful about your posture whenever you're seated or standing.

I thought I had a heart attack this morning the pain was so bad. Went to the ER and they did an EKG and did CT Scan and nothing came back wrong with my heart. It was some of the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I have no idea what caused it, it woke me out of a dead sleep at 6AM. They diagnosed it as costochondritis since none of the tests came back positive. Im just confused how it went from zero pain to thinking I had a heart attack literally overnight. I just got home from the hospital and it still is extremely tender and painful.

I had minor chest pain on and off for the last 1-2 weeks. The other night i woke up with very painful sharp pain in my left side of my chest, almost near the rib cage that lasted for a bit. I lift weights regularly so I'm wondering if that may have been part of the reason. Nonetheless I'm seeing my doctor about it first thing next week.

I work as an orthopedic PTA- yesterday I was showing a patient how to do 'goblet squats' with a 50# dumbbell, did a few reps with no problems (don't recall smacking the dumbbell into my chest hard at all), then 10 minutes later as i'm doing manual therapy on my next shoulder patient, start getting lower L rib pain that progressively gets worse over the next 20-30 minutes to the point where I was nauseated from the pain. My clinic owner and I tried a few things to see if we could pinpoint what was going on, but no localized TTP at all which we found strange, but I was in no shape to continue working. I went home, loaded up on advil and started icing off/on, felt much better after an hour, then the pain returned but more medial into the sternum and upper chest while trying to sleep- just couldn't find any comfortable position at all- no way in hell could I lay on my side or stomach as it instantly increased the pressure in my chest. All night i'm tossing and turning debating whether to go to the ER "just in case", but my health insurance sucks and i've been thru the whole "let make sure it's not your heart" thing before that cost me a months rent from all the tests they ran only to tell me "nope its not your heart" (that one was related to a fainting episode I had after suffering 2nd degree burns from cooking oil, I humored my parents and got checked out, luckily I interned at a burn-unit so my burn/wound care skills were up to par and i kept in touch with my CI from the unit).

It is so useful to learn about this. Years ago I had extensive heart checks in hospital because of chest pain, nothing wrong with heart. I've had restricted breathing from time to time since I was 12, I'm now 67! No doctor ever mentioned costochondritis to me, yet from what I have read recently and from my own observations about my body, I know that is what it is. So good to know what to do about it - self help. My worst problem is not the pain, but it is the lack of being able to breathe freely.

Hey Bob and Brad, thanks for putting out your informative videos. I've struggled with costochondritis for 3 months, and it was just diagnosed a couple days ago as costochondritis and not just strained intercostals. I've spent several weeks resting, but the costo flares up still even with very minor exercise. I've gone to a chiro 10 times in the last 3 weeks, multiple massage therapists, a physical therapist, and three primary care doctors. What do you recommend I do to heal up sooner than I've been healing over the past 3 months? It's so frustrating, I just want to get it figured out and not take months to heal up so I can get back to my normal sports activities and exercise. Thanks, Nick

Thank you so much for the video. I've had bad pain on both sides of my sternum for over two years now. It usually feels like my whole front chest wall is clenched and in very bad aching (not sharp) pain. It's quite bad when I'm sitting or standing upright, especially when sitting or standing still. I can aggravate the pain when pushing hard on my sternum or between my ribs (maybe #6 &7) on both sides of the sternum. The pain pretty much goes away completely when I lay down, however. This might be because my breathing gets shallower when I lay down to rest. I'm wondering if these symptoms are consistent with costochondritis. I've had other tests (ekg, CT scan, mri, endoscopy) and they all came up negative. Thank you for your help!

I have had cortisone injections into the cartilage I have had a lot of treatment for it. The combination that work best with me was prednisone dose pack, Trazodone, and Vicodin, and cytotec for my stomach. I used to be so nauseated I had burns on my chest from heating pads and also it made me nauseous and I couldn't eat I couldn't reach I could stretch for anything I have been on disability for 3 months and then it goes away without a trace. it had gone away for a couple of years but now it is slowly creeping back up and I am going to go to the doctor to get my regular regimen. Physiotherapist Steve August explains that its merely a mechanical issue. He says that the costovertebral joints (back rib joints that connect to vertebrae) are jammed and the hinges are unable to move, cause the rib hinges at the front on your sternum to compensate and therefor become inflamed.

I've had this for months and I have been unable to play sports which is very depressing for my sort of lifestyle. I've seen my GP multiple times this year and she came to the conclusion that it was anxiety which was complete rubbish considering I am very confident and hardly ever 'feel' anxious. So I paid to get private tests done like an ECG and they said my heart was fine which reassured me but at the same time I wished they had found something because they still didn't know what was wrong. About 7 months of feeling awful I went to A and E pretending to be really really ill and they done multiple tests and found out it was costochondritis which could have been treated with antibiotics ages ago. NHS is a shambles.
