Paharganj Delhi Main Bazaar - Heaven or hell?

The Main Bazaar in Paharganj is by some Delhiites considered hell due to it's reputation for drugs and shady characters. But as my good Indian friend told me "you can find these things everywhere in Delhi - they are just more obvious in the Main Bazaar". However, unlike many capital cities, Delhi actually feels pretty safe to me. This might be an illusion of course, but I like Delhi a lot and I also like the Main Bazaar. I have stayed there three times now and feel both comfortable there and quite at home. It is also the cheapest place to stay in Delhi and has lots of cheap restaurants, travel agencies and shops. This video gives you a small idea about the character of the Main Bazaar - heaven or hell? Judge for yourself.

As a boy I lived in paharganj from 1968 to 1976, then we ,my family migrated to London Uk . The memories will be in my mind forever, I go back to india every few years , of course place has changed quite a lot but essentially it is the same . I make a point of visiting Paharganj everytime I visit india eventhough we don' t have a house in paharganj anymore.

I lived in Delhi until last year and I used to loove Paharganj! Maybe it's just heaven to stoners and intense shoppers, but really everyone can view it differently. I always love taking relatives there when they come and visit because they flip shit at how chaotic it is, unless you're used to it. I don't know, you do get used to it, or in my case learn to love it. Plus the quality of bongs there are great :)

Haha. Memories. I spent a few days there 13 years ago. Looks exactly the same. At night the place comes alive with the market stalls. The room I had was a real dump too. All part of the charm. Heaven and hell rolled into 1.

One of my favourite places on earth ...and I don't know why! Just so full of life. Everywhere you look there's something crazy going on. That noise of cycle bells, revving 2 stroke engines, autorickshaw horns beeping and the murmur of voices, it all takes me back. Been there so many times. It's even better at night :-)

I can see why the area may not appeal to some people from its appearance but to me it looks like a haven for the explorer! Backpacking for me is about throwing yourself head first into completely foreign environments and learning new things about the way other countries and cultures live. I am going to India next weekend and staying in hostel New King which I just spotted on your video!!

Evidently ,due to the commonwealth games Paharganj has been upgraded .The council has been through and removed illegal structures plus resurfaced the road . Plus points ,it will be back to normal very quickly and is easier for my bag on wheels ,love the area :))

You were there about the same time as me. By February I was in Nepal, but Paharganji was my first taste of India. A culture shock yes, but that was why I went, to shake up my comfortable western ways. Arriving at two in the morning didn't help! Only there to get my bearings before further travel but came to love its vibrancy. Leave your expectations behind when you go as India will change them. Heave or Hell? It's who you are which will decide that. The room is fine and at the right price.

I have please try memory's of Paharganj! First visited in 97, and have returned six times since then. It has changed since the 90s . The last time I visited was 2017, I like to stay at the Hotel Namaste, or Vivek hotel. Like any location, it can be Heaven or Hell depending g on circumstance and perception. I know I will return again.

You nailed it when you said "it's not everybody's cup of tea" and even people from Delhi like to stay away from the area. You have to have lived on these streets to like them. I know of my friends from Delhi who would do almost anything to avoid going there.

Just a suggestion to foreign travellers. Shop there, enjoy the things, roam around, enjoy the shops and varieties, enjoy anything u like there during the day. But please don't stay in this area during night(especially if u r a woman) in any hotel or something after being attracted by it's cheapness, it's cheap because it's cheap in its character too, literally no hospitality, no humbleness, drug addicts everywhere, just zero character. Instead stay in South Delhi, it's a posh area. Yeah, u will find a lot of 5 star hotels(but still cheaper than premium hotels of ur own country) and other simple ones if u are on a tight budget, it will be a little costly(relative to those in Paharganj), but it's way more safe, good people, great hospitality, posh area, it's worth every extra penny spent(It's literally just opposite, huge difference between these two places). And u know, u can't measure ur life with money!!! It's literally the difference of safest and least safe places u will find in India, and these places just differ by few dollars and few kilometeres. And anyways, considering the conversion rate of dollar to rupee, the south Delhi ones will be still cheaper than your own country I guess. Please please please, I repeat, PLEASE DON'T STAY THERE!!! I hope that you will have great journey and memories here in India! Enjoy:)

@LivveHult I was there last summer before the government tore the front 5 feet off of the buildings on many of the streets to expand the roads for the commonwealth games. it looked like bombs had gone off. Some people defended the government saying that people had expanded their buildings forward into the road over the years. Obviously I'm not in a position to judge as an outsider but it looked horrible.

Hell for the rich, heaven for the poor.Foreign travellers on a very squeezed budget who can't afford to have a clean meal and a nice hotel go there. Whatever you get there is found in Khan Market and Dilli haat but the difference is the price. So the charm it has to some people is only derived from the fact that it is way cheap. People who live in Delhi and earn well will never choose to go to this kind of places. I have been there once cause a friend told me about it and got a shock.

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Delhi from mid January 2013 for about 2 months. Limited budget but when you say 300 Rupees, do you mean daily? because that is really cheap, with your own toilet and bath. Didn't see a window, though., Still, 300 rupees in the main bazaar. Boy! You don't say anything about curry. But I expect you ate lots of it. There are plenty of shady characters in the UK Parliament so why shouldn't Delhi have a few harmless criminals?
