Her no-good hubby Ben Gage and her two kids were with her. Keel told himself 'Look, but don't touch.' Instead he found a local schoolmistress for his location recreation. Esther was in early pregnancy and not feeling too hot, but she was always a trouper. She got Stanley Donen off the project after her bad experience with him and Gene Kelly on 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game', giving choreographer Robert Alton a chance to direct.

Despite the announcer's constant repetition of "Tahiti!", this was actually filmed on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. At 1:22, Howard Keel's arm is draped with a towel to hide a cast, because he had broken it in real life while shooting on Kauai.

This is a GOOD movie. The kids are charming and it is pretty and Esther is a better singer than she gets credit for. I will take whatever crap I get for this, but I Like This Movie... A Lot. so there

Esther didn't sing for herself in this film. She was dubbed.
The interracial romance, albeit with Esther in brownface rather than a genuine South Sea islander, was quite daring for an MGM family movie in 1950. 'South Pacific' made heavy weather of the same theme.
