Ah the sound and vision of Joy, many childhood and adult memories of loving Padstow May Day. It is the first thing I do on May 1st, sing the Padstow May Day Song. My Dad was from St Merryn and this always this always feels like home.

I absolutely love this, I am planning a trip to Cornwall as I have Cornish Ancestry and want to visit the places my ancestors are associated with, Padstow being one of them. I now know I will have to visit in time for May Day to see this for myself, awesome.

Massed accordions, quite terrifying! Great sound though.

It's a rather tragic story, steeped in tradition & folklore from the days of yore. Guy was in a cafe, ordered a scone, split it in two, but put cream on it, then jam. Cafe owner went berserk and the guy left the cafe wearing the table, never to be seen again. This primitive, tribal gathering is a celebration of that event, which legend has it, happened on 1st May sometime way back in the long distant past, even before Morris Dancers came over from Greece.

@@daveenglish2 Anybody would think it was a crime to not prepare a scone properly. Of course nowadays people might jokingly say "you heathen" for not preparing your scone the right way but people used to take that sort of thing very seriously. I have always found the mayday song a bit creapy but I like the sound of the accordions. I didn't even know it was supposed to be a cafe table until you mentioned it. Although the origins of Obby Oss are not clear or exactly when it started it one things for sure Obby Oss is definately one of the oldest festivals in Cornwall.
