PADI RDP Made Easy! (Adjusted NDL and Minimum Surface Interval Calculations)

PADI RDP Made Easy! (Adjusted NDL and Minimum Surface Interval Calculations). Part 3 of our series looking at the PADi Recreatio al Dive Planner (RDP). Its often a confusing and frustrating topic for new divers. In thesis episode Lyell will show you how easy it is to calculate for Adjusted Non Decompression Limits (NDL) and Minimum Surface Interval (SI) calculations....and at the end we have a little surprise for our viewers about the upcoming RDP video!

Years ago, on a whim, I bought one of PADI's eRDPml electronic dive calculators. I think I used it twice. Give me the printed tables any day of the week. Of course I now have a nice air-integrated dive computer, but I still use my RDPs before almost every dive. (I have air, EAN32, and EAN36 tables, plus a PO2/MOD table and an RDP-size slate, all in a nice bundle that fits in the pocket of my BCD.) Running the tables scares some students, but once you learn it you only need periodic refreshers to retain it. The nice thing about "old school" methods is that they just work. Thanks for posting these highly educational videos.

Excellent video - well done, easy to follow and answered my questions. It's been 20 years since learning tables--- always used my computer but had to re-learn the for altitude course test! - thanks.

Interesting that the pressure groups and min SI are different to these values when using the metric tables... Out with EPG of P, back in with an SPG of J, having required a min SI of 28min.

Is it ever recommended to do a safety stop between bars? Why is a safety stop always at 15ft? Air seems to close to surface. Wouldn’t it be better between 30 and 20ft?

so wouldn't that mean as an I diver you only have 5 minutes actual bottom time before mandatory deco stop? why would residual nitrogen give you more bottom time?

would it not be safer to round down when finding the ADJ NDL? when he is on table 3, rounding up to 42 mins to group L, instead of group M?

I’m preparing for IDC. Do you any online classes or something that I can buy to get myself ready for IDC?

That is something we are currently working on. We are prepping a large series of videos for Dive Theory and other topics within the IDC. Nothing fully finished yet unfortunately. Check out our other videos on Nitrox and the basic fundamentals of scuba diving for more theoretical reviews. Thanks for watching and good luck with your IDC!

140’ and 8 min … I’ve always been confused: Is that 8 min that I can stay at 140’ plus the time it takes to descend to that depth? (Probably not.) Or is that 8 min from starting the dive to reaching 140’ and then starting the ascent? Thank you.

i'm not an instructor but my understanding has always been that it starts from the moment you start the dive

I was under the impression that after you have you adjusted pressure group after a surface interval, you then use your depth to figure out how long you can stay at that depth without passing your NDL. But you picked a depth and time to figure out your next pressure group. Why do it this way?

I think it was just an example that you can calculate it that way if you wanted to, most likely you wouldn't.
