Paddys Market Gangsters

Who's the Gangsters ...3 Lovely ladies , former patrons of Paddys Market ..... which as most of us know was shut down by the desire of certain 'City Councillors ' who decided to implement their Ethnic Cleansing program ...by getting rid of the local traders and customers of the adored Paddys Market

First went to the "Barras" as a 5yr old kid 62-63 with my grannie from the Halfway,(S Lanarks),remember the old kitchen up the stairs with the wooden floor with table and benches where you went for you dinner, my grannie always wore a fur coat,I think she bought it there!

I agree The Barras is not what it was - but then what is - having said that if you can be arsed going there with an open mind there are still a few of the old type Barras traders here and there and still few wee hidden gems - and still a lot of really nice down to earth folk with their Glasgow humour .There is still good stuff to be found if you take the time and have a wander round every area - its just a shame so many folk have turned their back on it like a load of sheep - then the same folk will be getting their knickers in a twist when it goes the same way as Paddys

@weeclaire85 Paddys Market was a famous brig a brac area part of the Saltmarket area of the east end of Glasgow. It closed down a few year ago but it was where you could buy anything basically and it was run by generations of working class familys for over 200 years. Hope this helps!

It was closed down due to the smack dealers from hope house and the junkies destroying the place

@@starrchild254Anyone of that description was a by product of the adjoining hostel (Hope House), which was itself in receipt of a Glasgow City Council contract. Paddy's Market was not the problem. The hostel was. Unfortunately, Paddy's Market was the fall guy, the scapegoat. Get yer facts right pal!

was apprenticed in Oxford Street in the Gorbals, used to visit this place many times, shame on the council for closing one of Glasgow's most famous destinations, as usual, shows no forward thinking, I remember in the 60's when they were knocking down all the old tenements, it suddenly dawned on them to keep them and refurbish them, some beautiful old buildings were lost and used as infill for the Castle street flyover

R.I.P Paddys market. Still lying empty after all these years, the council promised it would be developed. Closed down supposedly because of the SA hostel next door, which was quickly sold off by the council as soon as they shut Paddys. The drug dealers that were the supposed problem and reason for the closure just walked up the st to sell their wares there instead. A whole community of local people and 200 years of culture wiped out by the council for a few ££.... The guy who ordered the closure was Gordon Matheson, who got arrested for performing sex acts on a guy in a carpark. He replaced his chum Stephen Purcell who got caught doing cocaine in council buildings in more sex scandal. The irony is too much to take. If you earn more than £20 a day (total after tax) in Glasgow- the council will take up to £1400 off you a year for their "services". If you dare miss a payment by a couple of weeks, they employ private companies to harass you for another couple of weeks before kicking your door in and taking your stuff. They then sell it for peanuts and give some of the money back to the council, who shove it up their noses (and god knows where else !).

Aye the `barra`s` are bitter, no more honest bargains anymore & what happened to all the characters that used to frequent it?, the place is a pick-pocketing nightmare now. The standards have fallen in my opinion.

Marxism promoted fascism; Mussolini and Hitler were both influenced by Marx as to how to set up a dictatorship. But what has the need for a secular society to do with it? Sectarianism is evil - look at what it did to Ireland. And is still a big problem in Glasgow.
