Paddy The Pet Goose, Graiguecullen, Co. Carlow, Ireland 1974

Ойын-сауық

A goose waddling behind his young owners is a regular sight in the streets of Graiguecullen.
In 1970 Miley Doran bought a gosling from a woman in Bagenalstown in County Carlow for ten shillings. He had not planned to buy a goose, but thought the creature could be fattened, killed, and boiled to make soup.
Miley Doran’s children had other ideas. They christened the gander Paddy and he became a family pet.
He’ll never be killed here, he came for that job but it will never be done.
Paddy is now a familiar sight around Graiguecullen on the Laois Carlow County boundary. The goose is frequently seen out walking around Carlow with Miley Doran’s young girls. Paddy must be locked up each morning or else he will follow them to school. He dislikes water and prefers to waddle around the shops with his young owners. While Paddy is tame with the girls, he dislikes boys and adults.
Such is this goose’s celebrity that several people have offered to buy Paddy from Miley Doran. But Paddy will never be sold nor slaughtered,
He saved his own life by doing a few tricks.
This episode of ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’ was broadcast on 31 January 1974. The reporter is Frank Hall. The track accompanying this clip is ‘Walking’ by CCS.
Frank Hall’s amusing and satirical series began on 29 September 1971 with the full title ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly Incorporating the Provincial Vindicator’ which became known as ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’.
The series allowed Frank Hall to follow his own interest in the lives of viewers throughout the country. Regarded as RTÉ’s flagship comedy show, it featured satirical sketches on current news stories and popular culture, as well as parody songs, comedy sketches, re-edited videos, cartoons and spoof television formats. The show ran for nine series until 1980.

That VW was used as a getaway vehicle in many bank and post office robberies, it drove away in a nice and gentle after the raids, it never looked suspicious, The Garda Síochána never checked or pulled the driver over as they knew well that gang on board were just hippies on a tour around the country and they would not hurt a fly. But please keep this secret as I was one of the gang

Simpler times.....I had a pet jackdaw. We were all afraid of farmyard geese, back in the day, especially a big gander as these would give a child a severe beating if you crossed them...they always gave a warning before the attack was launched though....

This very fine Paddy the Goosey Gander with human feeling is not for the pot, watch him Skipptey De Hop as the kids make their school, this Gander made it all the way to top grade in his class, he was excellent at history and geography, fishing and none stop flying over water., later he became Lord Mayor of his City and some years later became an independent TD, He sat with the Green Party for a while until he was invited to their Christman dinner party, he was shocked and disgusted by what was served up as the main meal and let policies forever, he now sails the seven seas with his large family but he always comes back to visit his dear old school friends from 1974

Reporting on the most Up-to-date news on Paddy the goose gander is still alive and is Swanning all around the place like he owns it, He has already written the script for a film to be made about his life but the film company are finding it difficult to find the right type of character actor how can play the part of Paddy the Goosey Gander the goose about town, The goose who passed his driving test at the first attempt, The first goose to become the first goose test driver for a F1 one team. The goose who went to school and got top honors, The goose who hit the big times yet did not fame go to his head, The goose who stood his ground, he stood up for the weak, small, poor and the downtrodden, he would never allow anyone to speak badly about any of his kind, The goose who helped to teach mankind that Gooses have rights too and it is not all about the Christmas dinner and very fine mattresses and pillows filled with silky feathers. I was told by a totally reliable source that Paddy the goose gander is planning to stand in the next presidential election, he will get my vote that is for sure.
