Paddy Ashdown | Leadership Contest | Liberal Democrats | This Week | 1988

This is a shortened version of the original report.
With growing speculation that David Steel will not seek the leadership of the Social and Liberal Democrats, the programme profiles the man most likely to succeed - Paddy Ashdown, former public schoolboy, and one time SBS commando, foreign office diplomat who fought for seven years to win a seat in Parliament. The Programme also commissioned a poll of party activist to find out the latest opinions about the possible succession stakes.

For all their faults, I still remember these people, they had some real personality.

Yes, fancy being able to say what you think, without worrying about being screeched at by "offended" Twitter hordes the second you dare to mention any hate-facts. Those sorts existed, of course, but were rightly considered to be on the lunatic fringe, and ignored accordingly.

Or Paddy Backdown, as Dennis Skinner called him during the 92 election when he called on his supporters to vote tory to keep labour out. I can't help thinking in these clips he reminds me of a made for TV bliar clone. Yuck.

@@rogercliftonville-acton1574 he was actually called Paddy Backdown as a result of his change of heart on nuclear weapons. It was David Owen who endorsed the tories to keep out Labour in 1992

12:49 Amazing how we think of Paddy as someone with great political gravitas, but here he trailblazing as the modern shapeshifting politician changing his views to suit the moment.

It's Paddy Backdown, as I love Dennis Skinner repeatedly referring to him during the 1992 election night coverage as it became clear that everything had gone pear-shaped.
