Pad Krapow and Detroit's Best Thai Food at a Buddhist Temple - Cooking in America
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Cooking in America is in Detroit, and host Sheldon Simeon makes his first stop at the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center, a temple established in 1995 as the first and only Buddhist center in Detroit. In the courtyard, Sheldon tries out Detroit's best Thai food including a spice pad krapow.
Phenwipha Nelson works as a waitress, and she learned how to cook both from her mother and from culinary school training in Thailand. Her pad krapow is a favorite of the Sunday market that happens bimonthly at the Center, and she made it two-ways for Sheldon - with pork and with seafood.
Eater is the one-stop-shop for food and restaurant obsessives across the country. With features, explainers, animations, recipes, and more - it’s the most indulgent food content around. So get hungry.

I was born in Warren, 8 Mile and Ryan, and moved away in 1986. My family would have definitely been regular visitors to this temple had it been around then. It would have been great to meet more Thai and Lao people then.
i LOVE this series! keep them coming! :)
Thanks for visiting Detroit!

Does anyone know the style of that type of fried egg? It looks so good, and I'd love to make it!

You just use the oil and chicken egg (duck egg is not good with this type of fried egg because of its smell and taste). With not too much oil in the pan and fry an egg only one side,do not flip it. Wait for an egg cooked by looking at its edge turning a little bit brown. Finish! P.s. add a little bit of soysauce or salt. You’ll get more taste.
looks delicious anyone got a recipe?
Can someone link me to the background music in the intro ?

Who ever told you they don’t is a lie lol. They can eat meat. Unless it’s a different type of Buddhist monk that can’t ? I’m more familiar with Theravada Buddhism. Idk about the others.

The vegetarian Buddhist monks are usually part of the Mahayana Buddhist school. Buddhist monks are vegetarian in China & Vietnam. The great Shaolin Kung Fu monks in China follow a plant based diet. Theravada school is a different Buddhist school in countries like Thailand & Cambodia.

"In Buddhism, the views on vegetarianism vary between different schools of thought. According to Theravada, the Buddha allowed his monks to eat pork, chicken and fish if the monk was aware that the animal was not killed on their behalf." Wikipedia

I know as a vietnamese buddhist its weird to me but my girlfirend is Laos and when i first saw her monks eating meat i asked about it. And for Laotian and Thai monks they are from a different school of buddhism thats okay with eating meat. It's different but they still have basically the same teachings. It's never over consumed either.

Tibetan monks eat meat all the time, mostly because they can't really grow vegetables in Tibet, so its either eat meat or starve.

not all Buddhist monks are the same, in Thailand and Laos, monks eat meat as well.
@cHemon

It's Theravada Buddhism practiced mainly in Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. Monks cannot choose what they eat so they have to eat whatever people give to them, with some exceptions.
@1966Zodiac

Not all Monks follow that same thought. However, I agree they SHOULD be vegetarian. This is BS!! Compassion should be taught, and eating meat is not compassionate. I came to this video hoping to see some good vegan Thai food from a temple, but it's full of meat. I got pissed off.

There are both vegetarian monks and non vegetarian monks. Both is right. Eating animals meat or not , it's up to your free choice. No prohibiting or commanding about this.
You guys always do it... Don't say "Detroit" when these restaurants are NOT in Detroit. It's like saying Jersey City Hotdog is the best hotdog in NYC.
