Marlon James. So in the history of all musicians in world, you think that no other have ever reached his level? I doubt that very much. It does not work that way.

@@Mr.Monta77 Kim, yes, you are probably right. Establishing hierarchies, especially in the arts, is a little sacreligious....As a matter of fact, it's something I usually rail against you might say, on principle, because we don't get very far nourishing that idea. On the other hand, we all have our heroes, or a need for, and the freedom to express adulation for them is part of keeping narratives alive. When I say that he is the greatest, it doesn't mean I think he is better than anyone else, It is just an exaggeration to make a point of how much awe I have for this man's talent. Maybe I, and all of us, could be more careful with our language. But as a professional musician myself, I do have an informed ability in gauging the 'greatness" of another of my brothers in spirit. So I can go either way. But its like Plato said, what is important about an idea is not its truthfulness, but in its being interesting--because that then engenders dialog, a back and forth parlaying of ideas. The "he was the greatest' thing, though a bit sophmoric, does carry with it a certain enthusiasm, that oils the wheel and gets everybody excited to wax poetical, to take a reach if you know what I mean. Like for, example, my ultimate guys for strings, if I was pressed to answer that, hypothetically for fun, would be Paco, Hendrix and Ali Akbar Khan. Or how about this idea: In every field of creative expression, there is a 'peak blossoming period' where the Art is elevated to its highest level (because of a certain set of conditions), and never returns there because the milieu changes. So maybe Paco is the peak blossoming of the flamenco guitar? What do think of these ideas? :
@Mr.Monta77

Marlon James well, I’m no expert in aestethical philosophy. We should not need to classify art or artist is such oversimplified categories. That’s counterproductive to our original intent: to express our deepfelt appreciation, respect and recognition of an artist’s craftsmanship, sophistication and performance level etc. Not sure if you understand. My basic point is that the type of hierarchical mechanistic perspective you applied is related to the view «well, it’s more expensive» or «they sold more records, and therefore ..» etc. I’m not against critisism or emotional response to hearing a piece of music. Not at all! But, if you study world music, you will realise that there are so many truly gifted instrumentalist in every genre. Indeed, there are so many accomplished musicians out there! Paco de Lucia was a supremely gifted musician and we all agree about that. But we don’t need repeat need to elevate him to an artifical position, just as we dont need to place a sign on mount Everest «the greatest mountain». It just is. And that perspective does not even take into account the classically trained musicians, often quite unknown to the general public, who perform to the highest standard. In short: Fine, be lyrical about your favorite. Just dont be so materialistic about it. There is no need. Which is the most beautiful bird? Flower? Sunset? Perfume? Voice? Paco himself, would agree with me.

@@Mr.Monta77 I agree with you Mr. Caspar, on all counts. Though I am a bit if a contrarian you might say. I am more interested in 'playing' with ideas rather than establishing truisms, as my comment may have appeared to be. I am also from the United States, and part of our culture is making grandiose generalizations, so forgive us our sins. Its a sort of naive posturing. Anyways, I appreciate you taking the time to comment thoughtfully. Its amazing to me how we don't (given the freedom of expression on thiese comment boards) take the time to have a true discourse. It often ends up just being a hurl of insults and tit for tat. Nobody knows to to shut up and listen. More often than not, if people actually exchange, both parties will learn something.
