PACKOUT and Die! Milwaukee PACKOUT Tap and Die Set with HEX-LOK Review [49-22-5603 -5604]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Mechanics, fabricators, contractors; many trades rely on a quality tap and die set. These new 38-piece Milwaukee PACKOUT Tap and Die Sets are available in Metric and SAE. The HEX-LOK system allows you to use the same tool for using the taps and dies. You also don't need any other tools, like a small screwdriver, for tightening set screws. Detents on the handle allow the dies to snap into place, and the same detents retain the tap holder in place as well. Look for these to hit the shelve in September 2023.

I have used at least 10 tap pack out cases including the 2 that I own and this is by far the best well thought out tap case. About time they have the tap dies sideways in case to save room. Great tap wrench. If I have more then 1 or 2 holes to tap go to my starter tap or one of the dozen gun taps. In thin metal I will drill one hole size under. Hole drilled with a hand drill always cone out oversized due to slight wobble.

It would be cool if they made drills in a pack just for this tap and die set where the drill would have marked on it not the size of the drill itself but the tap you should use with that drill bit so you don't have to look at any charts or tables and then they can sell more drill bits

If you are going to make a chart for the little pack out area remember it only has to be metric on the metric and standard on the standard

I wonder if that hole on the back of the tap wrench/holder suitable for a tap follower? (yes, tap follower, not thread chaser)

What is your option of this vs the Gearwrench 114pc tap and die set?

Would those inserts drop into a full width packout low profile case? That way you can have one kit with both sizes in it?

I would be a little worried about those small taps in that jaw system, seems like it is not holding a lot of the shaft so maybe easier to snap if not really careful

Yep, wouldn't have cost them much for a laminated card with the associated drill bit sizes. For $200 they could have included the drill bits and a tiny bottle of cutting oil too.

These don't say if they are carbon steel construction, HSS I'm sure they are not, but that is just standard in the industry? I'd assume carbon steel with black oxide coating?

Those are a bad idea. I've seen people using them and wonder why they break so many. The inclination is to stop thinking about what you're doing and just go. Your muscle memory in using ratcheted tools takes over and you just go. The obvious problem being you're not back tracking to break chips and likely also not adding oil at the right times because you're on autopilot.

  • @FixitFred

@@LordPadriac I have had zero issues with my gearwrench ratchet taps. Quality taps and slow movement is all you need haven’t broke any taps and it gets me into tighter spots because I dont have to a 360 revolution to cut the taps. And spinning back to break chips is very easy

Found the best tap fluid is the Tap magic from the 1980's. Guess the government made them change the formula but that stuff would evaporate cooling the tap. Worked in a 65 man maintenance shop where they always had a dozen cans of halve empty cans and boss would tell us to clean up shop every Friday so I would pour the halve empty cans into other tap magic cans and take them home. Even with the little red cap screwed on tight fluid in cans evaporated maybe 20% over the years.

When you cut the threads how tight is the nut and bolt when halfway assembled how much wobble is there??? And are they bottom out taps that thread to the bottom of the hole??? Cool is cool but sometimes not feasible...
