    Harbor freight jack for me, been using it for years on the KLR and other bikes. Also balancing is pretty easy to do yourself as well. I balanced the rims without tires and never looked back after tire changes. Just position tire correctly as most have a mark to be put opposite the valve stem or at valve stem depending on manufacturer

    DR650 owner. I started with 0 mechanical knowledge. I try to repair and maintain everything myself and have learned a lot. My biggest challenge changing tires was not puncturing the tube. Kenda k270s are balanced just right as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a super aggressive rider but they get me wherever I want to go and do very well on the highway with little vibration. Inexpensive too.

    Dual sport tires are so rough and bumpy that small imbalances aren't going change much in their highway miles. I did over 35,000 miles on my DR650 with a bunch of different tires, and by my last several tire changes, I stopped caring about balancing.

    You can balance your own tires pretty easily. Just take the tire off, put a steel rod through the axle hole and suspend it in the air with the ends of the steel rod supported between 2 jack stands. The heavy part will rotate to the bottom. Put your weights at the top, rotate the tire 90° or whatever, let the heavy spot rotate to the bottom again, add/remove weight till it doesn't have a heavy spot anymore (usually it will still have a slight heavy spot but not enough to affect it riding). Takes 5 minutes, I do it on my street legal bikes and it's been good up to 120mph the max speed of my africa twin. Changing tires is a pain in the ass until you've done it 5 or 10 times and it gets easier, which for your case might be the rest of your life of riding lol so might be just as well to take them to someone for changes. On the other hand, being experienced at fixing a flat out in the middle of nowhere can be worth it's weight in gold. Have done it a time or two.

    I can’t believe you don’t have a motorcycle jack. Talk to your buddy’s and ask them what kind of Jack to purchase there only around $ 100 here in Canada and you can strap them down so they don’t fall over while wrenching on the bike . You also can wheel your bike around while it’s strapped down to the jack. You said you use chain wax so do I it’s great because is no mess. Always apply when your chain is warm after a ride. And then don’t ride for a half hour so it works into the chain . Harbour freight has your jack get the 1500 lb one . I think it’s the best deal $ good luck cheers 🇨🇦

    My jack recommendation is to use a cheap set of jack stands. Put the bike on its side stand, rock it towards you so it starts leaning onto the side stand, and slip a jack stand underneat the right side peg bracket. Then, rock it onto that jack stand so the kick stand comes up off the ground, and slide the other jack stand under the left side peg mount. If you put the jack stands at the right height, your back tire will be off the ground. When you want to take your front wheel off, just put some weight on your luggage rack, so the bike rests on the stands + rear wheel. As for tire recommendations, if you're not doing deep, soft sand or mud, you can almost get away with street tires. I used multiple Shinko 705 rears for about 8k miles each and a single 705 front that gave me, no bullshit, 21k before I finally had to replace it. I tried D606's, Kenda K270's, and Michelin T63's. All of them were better off road than I needed, and none of them were close to the 705 on the street.

    Put wood across the bars that lift the bike. Like plywood. Makes a lift like your describing much more stable.

  • @steveh1510
    @steveh15105 жыл бұрын

    You should be able to make the old stand work if you raise up the base of it with wood or something else stable underneath it. Some stands are also adjustable. Or just get a new stand somewhere like Rocky Mountain motorcycle ATV. There's a bunch of affordable ones there. Either way you have to have the bike stand that works for your bike if you own a motorcycle. And it's only a matter of time before you get a flat on the trail so you might as well learn how to change your own tires if you're going to be dual sporting. Especially solo. I'm enjoying your content. Also I read that book and it gets really heavy towards the end. Good reading so stick with it.

    As far as a way to prop up your bike, have you looked into a center stand? I know you don't like the BMWs but I have one on my f800gs. It my most used and most essential add on. I prop it up on the center stand to clean, lube, replace my chain and sprockets. You can easily remove either tire, just weigh down the opposite end. It's a jack stand mounted to your bike so you're never without it. Or you could ghetto rig the jack stand you have and make a platform for your stand to sit on out of some cheap cut up 2x4s and/or a platform bolted on top.

  • @paulwatts3009

    @paulwatts3009

    I agree that a 800cc bike should have a center stand. I have a Triumph Tiger 800 XC and always use my center stand. I have never dropped a bike on a center stand. I've had mixed results with a kick stand. I also have a Yamaha WR 450 F. I would never put a center stand on this because of the weight, and because dropping it usually doesn't cost me any money.

    I think all of us a little bit lazy. I've never done it myself but there is always static wheel balancing stands. Once I get a place with a good sized garage, I'm getting one and never paying anyone to mount and balance my wheels. They pretty much pay for themselves the first or second time you use it. I think you can true spoked rims on the stand too.

    If you wanna try and change your own tires the typical rule of thumb for poor man balancing is 2.5 oz opposite the rim lock. I’ve been doing that on my ktm 500 for a couple years and there is no shake up to 90 mph. Also, there are “dirtbike stands” that have a foot lever to raise the bike without having to lift it.

  • @DustySquitoNM

    @DustySquitoNM

    Those dedicated dirt bike stands usually have pretty low weight limits. I looked into one for my old DR650, but the ones at Cyclegear were rated for about 50 less pounds than my bike weighed. I would have loved one of those for the right weight limit.

    Just curious, why a gun?

    1. I'm allowed to by state law. 2. Its entertaining to shoot. 3. I am alone in remote public lands that are not policed. Is anybody out here robbing and killing people? Of course not. But two types of people come to these places. People like me, and unstable drunks and drug users who cant let loose in town. The more practical purpose is to ward off predator animals I guess, but mountain lions and bears dont ussually approach people. Last year I had an elk in rut come running into my camp screaming though. I used the pistol to scare it off, but probably didnt need to. I just didnt want it running through my hammock and breaking my back.

    Friday'sThe Bomb So I can tell by response #1 this might be a touchy subject. Not trying to insult you, it’s just something that gets to me. A while ago I went moto camping out in the desert and I had bullets literally flying over my head from people who thought their gun was “entertaining to shoot”. While it may be fun to shoot, it’s not fun for others to hear gunshots or to feel the presence of a gun. It seemed like you made a point to show your gun in your video so I wanted to ask. I also had a herd of elk run past my tent in the middle of the night. It was scary but I doubt a pistol can stop them. No offense intended. Happy riding.

    I show the gun in videos because its good content. This audience responds positively to it, and some have asked for more of it, so I include it. Shooting the gun safely is also important, which I always make a point to do. In all of my videos you will see that I'm shooting into a soft backstop. I agree its uncomfortable to be around somebody who is shooting, especially if you cant tell where they are, what direction they are shooting in, if they are intoxicated, etc. I've been in those same situations. But it is legal in this area, I am doing it safely, and only for a short period of time.

    I really tried to get into that book, and for the first 50 pages or so thoroughly enjoyed it. But then it just got weird, convoluted, hard to follow, and plain uninteresting..... Unfortunately I put it down about halfway through.

    I suffered through that book, very little to do with motorcycle maintenance and not much to do with zen either. as for lifts, Ive got an XR650L and use a motorcross stand, but it's a bitch to wrestle up there, kind of tilt the bike toward me on the kick stand, lean the stand under it and then tilt the whole thing up and onto the stand, it's a PITA though. This is what I'll be getting soon, dirt bike stand, put it under the bike and press the lever, voila, a friend has one, the work good. www.ebay.com/itm/Tusk-Dirt-Bike-Adjustable-Lift-Stand-NEW-motorcycle-motocross-mx-dirtbike-enduro-/171483101107

    Good video! I made a M/C jack out of a pile of 2X4 blocks (screwed together) and one longer 2X4 that works as a lever to raise the bike and then helps brace the stack of blocks to keep them from toppling over. The number of 2X4 blocks that you use will depend on how much clearance there is under your skid plate. The XR650L specs say 13" ground clearance so you'd need 10 1.5" thick 2X4's to lift it to 15" This is a bad video but it shows the concept. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rGqltNaopq7Sp7g.html (skip to 1:36 unless you want to just watch a guy cutting blocks on a tablesaw. He finally demonstrates how it works around 5:30)

    I struggled with the tire balancing issue as well, then I tried the ceramic beads and love them! A little slow getting them into the inner tube, but once they were in, the tires were balanced. Check them out here: eztirebeads.com/

    @Brian Doherty lol I'm not a literary critic but I don't think Pirsig and McCarthy writes(wrote) in the same genre. You're comparing apples to oranges. And as FTB notes, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is about 2% motorcycle. I'd add it's about 0% Zen. It's a pop philosophy/autobiography paperback that was more about the new era emerging. Not a great work of literature but an influential and popular one. It was given a hooky name to sell books: Apparently Zen and motorcycles were popular topics at the time! PS McCarthy is one of the great writers of our time

    Both I guess. I've met crazy people in the wilderness before, and theres a video on this channel where I encounter a schizophrenic gentleman who believed I was sent by the government to find him. I do this a lot, and I do it alone, so it's just an extra tool that comes along.
