The thing with his brother getting ripped out of the Jaeger at the beginning, it isnt just traumatic to see, but he was IN his brothers mind while it was happening, the in the Drift. He felt everything his brother felt. The fear, the panic, the pain. It happened to him just as much as it happened to his brother. The only difference is he got to walk away. It's no wonder he walked away from the program.

Not only that but to add to the whole he was in his brothers mind, when they go into the drift they meld physically with the Yeager. You rip the arm off of the Yeager, you’re not just getting a shock like it shows…it literally feels like you arm has been ripped off. So he had to feel that thing rip through his head and tear away his brother who was holding half of all that pain and load with him. Took me a while to actually realize how much the Yeager and them were connected

A big part of this film is, even though scenes are largely CGI, and the camera is virtual, the filmmakers chose a very grounded and realistic approach to camera angles and motion, instead of wacky flying all over camera work.

The directors' commentary for this movie by Guillermo is truly amazing. He literally explains the direction, as in what the importance of all the choices made in production and why he made them. It is a really good way to learn to identify what makes a movie work, even dumb movies about giant robots. This truly is what Transformers could have been.

True, but without the dopey teens running around with their horomones, or the writers trying to explain existential philosophy in the last two episodes of the original 26. (And let's be honest, they tried, in a visual medium, which is not a good medium for something as abstract as philosophy. Now if the writers made a book or manga, that's different, but as I understand the tie-in manga to the show was way less bleak!)

@@zachlong5427 I have to completely disagree, 2d traditional hand painted Cel animation is the absolute perfect medium for exploring extremely existential concepts like what happened in Evangelion! Even the low budget animation style mixed with real life stills and reused animations/dialogue in the last episodes most certainly provoke a deep feeling of dread, it was most certainly ahead of its time and even a lot of it goes over ppls heads in the modern day. Also Anno was extremely broken at the time of the production of Evangelion and all the characters are just subtle reflections of his own struggles put to the absolute extreme. Evangelion itself revolutionized not only mecha anime for the time, but just how anime was viewed in general! Not to mention it’s far reaching influence that is almost most certainly at the roots of some of your other favored things! And even if the concepts of the original run fell flat for you, Anno still provided much more of a fully realized and less abstract ending with the End of Evangelion. Not to mention the countless other timelines and alternate universes and endings!!

@@mmxxiii9503 that’s actually a HUGE gripe I have with audiences in particular, not everything should be laid out for you or told directly to you the viewer in storytelling. I think ppl are too comfortable being spoon fed what exactly is happening with absolutely no nuance. In fact when things are in your face explained it takes a lot of the impact away, especially with abstract and existential concepts. It’s definitely more about immersion and and allowing yourself to be fully enveloped by a piece of art and seeing how it makes you feel and what questions it may bring. But I can admit I’m a huge fan of abstract surrealism and I know it’s not everyone’s goto, in fact a lot of ppl absolutely hate it lol! And I get it, Art is completely subjective! But I also think ppl have a hard time allowing themselves to fully loose themselves in consuming media and take it all in for what it was intended to be! But regardless the few who truly love it for what it is or were inspired by how impactful the series was have gone on to do projects of their own! And hell, the impact is so huge that we are talking about it all these years later on a reaction channel reacting to a western movie clearly heavily inspired by concepts from Evangelion! Crazy to think about!!

I love the music is the film. Unrelated, Unimportant fact: The art director of this movie, Hugo Martin, the main guy behind the robot fight scenes went on to become the director of the new DOOM games. There's a scene in the second game that closely resembles some of Pacific Rim's fights. You can watch a giant mech fighting a demon titan with it's fists in the background of Hell during the last level in Ancient Gods part II. I'm glad he's still doing cool stuff, because I've been in love with this movie since I was 13, when it first came out. I genuinely dislike the second movie however, let me down tremendously. That's just my opinion

Heck, I used to watch Godzilla, Gamera and Mothra in the movies when I was a kid. Now those movies were cheesy! It was basically an actor in a dinosaur suit knocking down scale models! This movie, in comparison, was awesome!

This movie is basically Evangelion minus the crippling depression and child abuse, but still with some good things, like: deep psychological trauma and someone being ordered to get in the goddamn robot.

I think originally the studio wanted to adopt the anime but could not obtain the rights so they made up Pacific Rim, though much of the concepts are pretty much the same as Evangelion

Except for all the morality issues with the Evangelion plot it's still 10x-100x better written than either Specific Rimjob film. Every scene with humans in makes me want to vomit because it reads like a child wrote it and then approved it for filming. Take away the human scenes and everything instantly improves, albeit making it more hollow than it already is.

That entire punch 🤛 into the building was entirely practical. It’s *all* miniatures. Yes. Even the paper on the desks.

Honestly, the best performance in the movie is probably from young Mako, played by Mana Ashida. Too adorable!

Actually, those pods might survive that pressure partly _because_ they're so small. It means their air-filled interior makes up less volume per cubic centimeter than a sub, which means that for its size, its hull is much thicker than a submarine's. Furthermore, because the person inside the pod is in a self-contained suit, you could flood the interior compartment with water, which would reduce the pressure differential further. That would make it more difficult for the pod to travel back to the surface, though.

@@user-xx6vy9ri8p They _did_ try nuking them, actually. You just don't see it onscreen because the war's been going for years. Problem is, it didn't stop the aliens from sending more. They eventually gave up because it did as much damage to the environment as it did to the kaiju. (And then, when Kaiju Blue became too much of a problem, they gave up on the environment, too.) But you're right... you sort of have to ignore logic. Like the scene where Gipsy picks up that cargo ship and uses it as a club. The engineer part of me kept screaming "No, no, no! That ship would break in half as soon as you pulled it out of the water!" 😜

The size has less to do with it than material composition and construction. Not to mention that they should have died instantly upon reading the surface. No tech shown in Pacific Rim strikes me as magically negating lethal effects of the bends (nitrogen narcosis).

Yup. That’s my favorite thing about this film, and where Uprising fell woefully short. They feel HUGE and have mass, and they way they move doesn’t feel like a scaled up human at all (which wouldn’t work because our physical structure couldn’t handle the weight that larger sizes require). Uprising made them move like scaled up humans, and it made it look like a cartoon at best, or Power Rangers at worst.

So many drops this week. Someone's finally in a groove!

"We found the love interest". One of the best things about this movie is they didn't shoehorn in an awkward relationship between the two leads

This movie is a Kaiju and giant robot fever dream and I love it!!

the thing that impressed me with this movie most wasn't the robots or the monsters it was the fight between the guy and the girl if you look at how their holding their staffs he's using the british style of the quaterstaff while she uses the bo staff technique. You never see the european version of stick fighting anymore so that was something I noticed and appreciated :D

Love this movie! My favorite scene was when young Mako first met Stacker Pentecost. Idris Elba looked so perfectly, epicly heroic, and Mana Ashida did such a great job of conveying Mako's terror, then her awe and gratitude. BTW the little Japanese actress had difficulty pronouncing Guillermo del Toro's name, so he let her call him "Totoro-san" (after the big, friendly creature in "My Neighbor Totoro" which you should watch if haven't already). Unfortunately, I didn't like the sequel though.

Gosh, I'm so happy you watched Pacific Rim, it's one of my favourite movies! There is just something about it that makes it so damn good. Glad you like it, too!

I saw this in the IMAX for the first without ever seeing the trailer. I remember after my hands were shaking. I was speechless. Best theater experience I think I've ever had.

He didn’t just see his brother die. They were connected so he felt it mentally and emotionally also. At least I think they were still connected.

maybe this is weird as someone who follows you since you do tend to be very romance-focused, but honestly, the thing that is the very best about this movie is that it leaves Raleigh and Mako's relationship up to interpretation... It makes it one of the far too few movies that don't automatically have a romantic component. They get very intimate and familiar without any actions that are actually romantic in nature. As someone who doesn't feel attraction that way, it's very validating. Our culture is far too centered on romance as being the most important relationship one can have, while friendships and familial relationships are just as valid. In fact, this does a really good job of exploring all sorts of different relationship dynamics.

And yet, somehow, he was able to pilot this two-man thing back to shore by himself.

Del Toro did a great job bringing the Anime Mech genre into live action.

I saw this movie in theaters and loved it!! So wish that they'd do a Battletech or Xenogears movie in a similar style. The CG in Pacific Rim and Alita really made me imagination run wild as to how they could do Gears and the floating city of Solaris. But then again, withe the way Hollywood is these days, odds are they'd wreck it...

I was highly disappoint by Alita - the Panzer Kunst left me less than impressed, and the same with the berserker suit which is completely insane. It's literally a whole body of cutting power - the sword was entirely surplus to purpose.

21:09 - You're not alone in looking at it deeper. As much as I enjoyed this movie, it's widely known these two pilots would have promptly experienced Decompression Sickness (aka The Bends) from ascending too quickly to the surface. Also nuclear reactors are different from nuclear bombs so they do not "detonate" if they go into meltdown.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Guillermo del toro always have something that makes his movies worth watching. Idris Elba, as always, gave a great performance. Other movies (especially since it's october) you should watch from him: Cronos, Blade 2, The Devil's Backbone, Hellboy 1 and 2.

"Imagine seeing that happen to your brother right before your eyes?!" Oh girl, it wasn't just before his eyes. They were drifting together. They were sharing a mind when it happened. That'd mess a person up SO BAD. Also if you like the choreography, you should ABSOLUTELY check out Jill Bearup's video about that staff fight between Raleigh and Mako. It's REAL good and it'll make you appreciate that particular fight scene even MORE.

First of all, you get points just for knowing that oil rigs are a thing, so don't feel bad about guessing wrong. Second, I appreciate your kindness even in the cases of the monsters. You recognize that some truly awful threats need to ge destroyed, but you feel bad for the people or living things that will suffer from such a terrible necessity. Don't lose that, it's important.

Mini-Mako being chased by Onibaba smashes my dad button so hard I don't think I've ever got through it without tearing up.

4:01 He can feel it as well. Every emotion his brother and fear he's experiencing, Raleigh feels it too.

You want more? There’s more: Warner tried corporately grinding out Pacific Rim: Uprising, so they could “franchise crossover” it into their Godzilla vs. Kong “Monsterverse”, and….nobody saw it. NOBODY. So, they had to go back and figure out some other way to explain who built Mechagodzilla, in their big Universe movie.

Maybe someone planned it, but I do not see how they could make a world used to Kaiju or titans become surprised when titans or Kaiju show up. Plus, if we had native Kaiju in the titans, why would they (and we) not (weaponize them to) fight the invasive Kaiju? It would be too busy a world to be entertaining, I think. It should have been planned better if they meant for there to be a crossover.

Just so you know the Kaiju are more or less giant flesh robots. They are created just like the Jaegers are. The reason why they detonated the payload early is because it was jammed and they couldn't release it not only that they still had to Kaiju so they were trying to clear the way so the other team could close the breach knowing how f*****-up Gipsy Danger was.

A great movie, with a crap sequel. Avoid the sequel! Also, the scene with the jaeger punching through the office and hitting the desk toy was real! They built the whole thing in miniature to get the practical effect.

Loved the reaction, extra points for mentioning Monster Hunter and Gundam (though I agree with many of the comments that it's a lot closer to Evangelion)

One little feature I love that I have literally just thought of (starting British Army officer training soon), is that Idris' character refers to Raleigh and Mako as "Mr and Miss". As pilots are traditionally an Officer rank, Junior Officers (Second Lieutenants and Lieutenants), in the British military are referred to as "Mr" or "Miss" as they are considered a lower rank of "gentleman/lady", which makes sense as in the character backstory Marshall Pentercost was an Officer himself and his sister were RAF pilots. A nice little detail.

I have a love and dislike for the movie, but when it comes down seeing a Kaiju monster fighting a Gundam it's an icing on a cake! However, the second movie wasn't great. You should add Godzilla 2014 and King of the Monster on your list.

I love Godzilla because of the monsters (kaiju). I love Pacific Rim because of the mechs (Jaagers). While the CGI in the PR series is a bit off at times, it's still just an all-out fun action-packed series. Where as with Godzilla, the super amount of time spent on humans ruins the fun for some. Though I don't mind really because Godzilla has always had a human element to it.

I love when people try to find logic in a monster movie. 😆

I would suggest watching the first of these, "Evangelion 1.11, You Are (Not) Alone" if you would like to see the material that inspired "Pacific Rim."

No, not really, it is inspired by the mecha genre and Kaiju movies, Del Toro has been a fan of the genre since he was a child, it shares little or nothing with Evangelion apart from the genre.

@@gatobuho- I would make the argument that the creators of Pacific Rim did include an Easter egg that says otherwise. Of course Rinko Kikuchi does an excellent job as Mako Mori in the film. And as a native Japanese actress she should have no problem with lines in Japanese. And yet the few lines from the character in the film in Japanese are in fact dubbed by another actress. Who would that be? Megumi Hayashibara, who is none other than the original voice of Rei Ayanami in Neon Genesis. I don't think that's an accident.

@@DavidGarcia-kw4sf Del Toro confirmed he never watched Evangelion prior to making pacific rim. It's just a coincidence pacific rim shares similarities with Evangelion and nothing more. Any connections pacific rim had to Evangelion were NOT done intentionally when the director said he never watched Evangelion and the movie was not inspired by it

Don't feel bad for the Kaiju, they're not animals, they're machines that just look like animals, that would be like feeling bad for the aliens, who are actively trying to kill every human 😂

Yeah it’s not like they’re MV kaiju, who are mostly meant to bring balance to the world, that is unless Ghidorah showed up.

No offense to the people who "hate" this movie, but almost everyone of them tends to also be an unironic movie snob aka people who are no fun 🤣 This movie is awesome and so are you, VKunia!! Seeing this in theaters was amazing, it felt like we were in the Jaegers 👍😇👍

Idris Elba had one of the best motivational speeches of all time.Up there with Bill Pullman and Viggo Mortensen. He cancelled the freaking apocalipse.

I was lucky enough to see this epic movie in IMAX. One of the best theater experiences of my life! I was completely blown away by the visuals and sound 😍

12:45 So one of the reasons the Jaegars started to lose was because, the Kaiju continued to evolve. As time went on, bigger and stronger Kaiju were sent in. Whereas the Jaeger pilots and veterans could only pilot the same Jaegars over and over until gradually, their skills and equipment weren't enough to take on the newer advanced forms of Kaiju. Also, as explained by Hannibal Chau, when drifting with a kaiju brain, it's a two-way bridge. As a result, the weaknesses of the surviving jaegers was exposed to the Kaiju creators. They built two kaiju monsters during the double event that were specifically designed to destroy the last Jaegars. They had Otachi with acid spray to melt the Jaeger armor. And gave it a tail with a claw at the end to aim for Crimson Typhoon's control pod/head which is it's main weakness. Leatherback was giving a large gorilla form and defense. It could take damage and beat up a Jaeger in close quarters. And it came with the EMP function to knock out Striker's electrical systems. Once Raleigh and Mako saw these tactics at least once, they knew exactly what they needed to fight the two Kaijus that had destroyed their allies.

Mako had to deal with a giant enemy crab early in life.

I love this movie with all my heart, i am just now getting into your videos and i'm happy you actually checked this out, in my opinion it's one of my favorite movies of all time since i saw it in theaters and i was really young.

Thought I was gonna enjoy watching this but now I just wanna see a movie about an oil rig that turns into a robot!!

Tbh, not many people don't know about Pacific Rim because of the Kaiju vs Giant Mechas, it was just a creative guy that said "What would a western mecha blockbuster would look like?" and BAM one of the greates mecha movies was made

The honest trailer for Pacific Rim is the funniest honest trailer ever. I have to watch this movie again.

The sheer cleverness and sass never cease to amaze me.

I love how in action movies they always have the modern fighter jets using their gun when in reality they can drop precision bombs and missiles that are far more powerful. 😆

Dog fights are far more dramatic

It's as if Guillermo del Toro saw "Cloverfield" and said to himself, "I could do it better."

A spherical and egg-shaped capsule is surprisingly strong. Do the following: Keeping your thumb well out of the way, crush a raw egg using your palm and fingers, no thumb. You'll see how smart nature is. This is not a prank, this is a "who knew?".

Ron Pearlman didn’t say he drifted with a Kaījū’s brain. He said he tried a public bunker. That’s why his face was scarred.

Every time I see someone's reaction to this or a Transformers movie the MEGAS XLR theme song instantly starts playing in my head. :D

You were not paying attention enough to what the characters say and the story but I loved it 🤣

I have never heard of anyone not liking this movie. The sequel gets very mixed reviews but I was under the impression the this one was liked by pretty much everyone.

The soundtrack also made the movie even better :)

Ramin Djawadi, who also made the score from the first Iron man movie and the Game of thrones series' one (among others nice themes) So, yeah, he's good for making catchy themes you keep in your head for days (Tun tun, tututun tun, tututun tun, tututun tun...)

One must indulge in cheese to savor greatness. You go girl.

2:57 only difference being gundams don't have the cockpit in its head but other than that, yeah, that checks out.

I don't get why Hollywood hasn't tried to make a live action, Mobile Suit Gundam, Voltran, or Evangelion Genesis. I'd watch an amazing story featuring people piloting robots.

I just replaying My XENOGEARS almost finished the first Disk and she reacted to Pacific Rim? Good Lord! Thank God!

This movie was so much fun!! I grew up watching all the Gamera/Godzilla/Ultraman/general tokusatsu stuff so seeing this as one big love letter to the whole genre was wonderful.

I'm here for the spontaneous "get wrecked!" comments sprinkled in every so often ;-)

"Is that a boat?" Out of the whole movie, that's what makes me nostalgic. I used to battle it out with my son on the PS3 game Godzilla: Save the Earth, and one of the things you could do is hit each other with oil tankers. Miss those days.

"So there's this movie where two people need to synchronize their actions to use giant robots to fight giant monsters" Oh, so they saw that one episode of Evangelion and came up with this concept... "And there's a scene where they pick up a SHIP to fight with" Oh. Well I guess they saw two episodes then.
