As a Star Trek nerd from the early 1970's I have a little complaint.....Oh no, wait I don't! As a purist I find this extremely satisfying! The very early Star Fleet aesthetic is completely convincing, from ship design to uniforms. The CGI is beyond impressive and the physical sets are impressive while still retaining the main design details that I loved as a child. The writing, well I can't find any criticism, it just evokes TOS for me. Some comments have lightly criticised the acting, and while I have a certain amount of sympathy for that I can't truly say any of it was actually bad. Most of it actually far outpaced TOS acting. In my own opinion (and I am not arrogant enough to actually expect anyone else to agree with me) I would happily pay a monthly subscription to be able to stream 10 episodes of this per year ( at this quality ) for at least 5 years, but I'd prefer 7 seasons. I've been less than impressed with some recent official offerings ( while still watching and not completely hating them ) This fan film blew me out of the water, very, very impressive and shows it's deep knowledge of the original I.P. (edited for spelling mistakes)

The lyrics to the hymn being sung in the opening scene are actually from the poem "High Flight", written by John Gillespie Magee, Jr., an American volunteer pilot who was killed in a midair collision over England in 1941 while serving in the RCAF. Okay. There are basically two kinds of Star Trek fan videos: there are the ones featuring teens who cannot act, in stories that are not plausible and that use green screened backgrounds and almost zero as far as props. Those generally use the same effects of sparking explosions inside the bridge that would either kill people or at lease scorch a lot of things. They are barely watchable. Then, there are the professional productions that have actual sets, use people who are right for their roles, and have very good-to-great special effects. This one falls into that second category. It is a real pro job. Certainly, the acting and delivery of lines can use some fine tuning, but this is an enjoyable production. I look forward to the next part(s) and wish the mercenary bean counters at CBS and/or Paramount would climb back off their high horses and allow these quality extensions to Star Trek of go ahead without constrictions. Great job Pacific 201 team. Please, keep it up.

Well, people in Star Trek generally do try to be polite, honest and intelligent. That still doesn't make them perfect or infallible. I like that one of the main themes of this fan film is exploring just that, in addition to the topic of various fears and how they influence our thinking, worldviews, and even policies, as a species. The trauma from the war with the Romulans is making the Earth and early Federation leadership (both civilian and military) a little too paranoid for their own good, trying to focus on military and espionage goals all the while pretending they've refocused on scientific exploration. The experiences of acting captain Vandre and her surviving crew clearly point to that tension and how it's actually undermining the ideals of the Federation and Starfleet, rather than making them more resilient and with the times. Rader's revelations to Vandre about the actual intriguing things they found, instead of tiresome espionage and realpolitik, gives a little hope for the upcoming 23rd century, as symbolised by the repaired Pacific 201 jumping to warp at the end of the story...

First, let me just say, well done! I gave it a like almost immediately. I feel actors could use a little more direction and camera could be a little more dynamic. It looks like you have some sets built, so you should use that to move that camera a little or get different angles. The ship is just gorgeous! That first shot of it, when you pan around it - oh, wow! You can see the work that went in it. Kudos to all the actors. You can easily see the effort and passion. Can't wait to see more!

Most of the Star Trek fan films I've seen need better lighting and camera work. I can never quite put my finger on what's wrong, just that it doesn't look right. If I went to directing school and learned how to set shots up, I'd probably be able to see how to correct it. This fan film does better than most. The camera work could be better, but at least I'm not looking at it and thinking that they've put a lot of work into this just to mess it up with the camera work.

  • @tehs3raph1m

@@bukster1 it looks like a lot of shots are green screen, they are incredibly hard to get right, also it looks like they are shot at 50 or 60fps which gives a very weird look called the "soap opera effect" Also the soundstage needs work in some shots. I may try to rework them myself, the talking while at the beach early on sounds like they are recorded in a small office, the footsteps in the opening sequence and the chair creaks sound small and not wide as they should. But then in other scenes, the CGI is amazing and the audio is back to being too notch. My favourite sound effect is the door, which is clearly someone going pssssshhhwwwww into a mic it's great!!

  • @Allinfun6789

The camera work did not bother me as much as poor sound editing. There are some really great sound effects, the door opening and closing is not one of them. The actor's voices sound puny/tinny and there is an echo on the set. They need to do a better job with the sound mix. The captain's voice is high tenor speaking range needs to lower a few tones.

I agree! More direction is especially needed with the actor's energy-levels in stressful situations. The way the XO was hanging from the shuttle was kinda wooden and when she was dragged aboard, she didn't quite react like she was just hanging from the side of a shuttle by her hands, high above a desintegrating planet... But the visuals are awesome! All in all, not too bad indeed! Looking forward to the next part. Live long, prosper and boldly stay where you've been the last several months... your home! 😁
