Betel Box was first introduced by Mughals and Later on it was brought to Bengal by Nababs. At the time passed on, it was absorbed in Bengali Culture. Betel Box or 'Paaner Bata' were specially used by the Ladies of Bengali Houses. It was made with Kaansha or Pitol, a special kind of Metal which had a similar golden texture as Gold. The design on Betel Box was called 'Nakshi'. This type of Betel Box was fondly called by Bengalis as 'Nakshi Paaner Bata'. At that time, offering Paan was a way to greet a guest or a newly introduce friends,specially among the ladies. The top shelf of this box was used to store Chun,Supuri,Mosala,Khoyer and other necessary ingredients which were used to make a 'Saji Paan'. The lower compartment was used to store Betel or Paan leaf. Offering a Paan had often depicted as a symbol of friendship among the ladies.
