The only SG I ever owned was a late 70’s with P-90’s. The neck pickup on that guitar had a sound like a violin!!! Endless sustain and killer tone!!

So underrated, SG's, I don't know why! I thought I hated them for yeàrs, because I thought it was deliberately designed to look like the devil's head/horns. And Satanic Panic had cooled down to a tepid, lame, yawn - by the time I was teaching myself chords on an old a justice from a batteredokd chord book. Pretending to be minions of Satan... to snub your rebellious nose at the Almighty, was once the ultimare, ballsey act of rebellion... but had become a lame way to seem edgy, it "bad" or...even remotely interesting. Ozzy Osbourne, ACDC, Judas Priest , Kiss, Alice Cooper, W.A.S.P. and Venom were all on the way out as I was coming through. I got turned into rock music, and learning guitar at age 12-13, right at the end of town metals' run on the Sunset Strip. So...by that point, the o G acts like Black Sabbath and KISS were already kinda passe...and the death of Glam metal DOUBLY killed them. So, me,a teen wannabe rocker in the late 80's/90's , saw SG like I saw (and still see) the BC Warlock : all about looking "scary", without concerning itself with just focusing on being a good instrument. But I stumbled onto trying one out for serious a few yrs back...and wound up buying the blue SG Special, by Gibson , you see in my icon picture.☝️ My number one , now. ALMOST the perfect guitar! I am as surprised as anyone, believe me! I didn't think any model could outdo both the Strat AND the Les Paul, in one go! But that's really what it is....the best principles from each....the ergonomics of a Strat (albeit, employed iñ their own, different manner)...with thebest construction of the LP for great , rich, sustaining tone____________________________! I think it was just one or two "Makes/Marks" away from the penultimate, perfect Rock guitar. Ithink making the body thicker, but still thinner than a Les Paul, would counter neck dive...and add more of the rich Les Paul tone into it. That would be perfect. But...mine is pretty close, otherwise. It doesn't really dive, and it is so resonant...it siiiings!! I done rambled again.😗 But yeah...I meant to say that once I eventually gave it a go, I realised that my preconception - that it was shape that way to look "cool", like an Antichrist Axe, the Beelzebub blues basher...the Ghoul-Gods' guitar...the Satanic Shredstick and the Devil's Djenter...(lol - really pushing them now!😂)...was just wrong. It is shaped like that for ergonomic reasons...one of only a few guitarp models this can be said about, wholly and honestly. The Stratocaster...the Jazzmaster...and the SG...are the only classic shapes that were designed with ergonomics being the chief factor. In modern ti es,I would add the Boden, by Strandberg. So...the SG is in a very exclusive club of guitar models who DID NOT do what I accused it if..! I gotta stop raving on to some poor dude in the comments, who was just breezing through while be eats his cornflakes!

My sg special is the only guitar I have where I like the neck pickup better than the bridge.
I have an SG Classic and the P90's are spot on. Perfect in between of the single coil and humbucker. Best of both worlds really.
Gibsons on P-90 are fantastic with one of the most versatile pickups! Firstly, on different amps you can get both vintage and modern sounds. Secondly, use Volume and Tone knobs, for example "humbucker" will be with Tone from 8 to 4, "single coil" will be from 5 to 2 (depends on amp and basically your task). Third, they are less noisy than single coils. And last - they have enough output to cover everything, from crystal cleans, to heaviest drop-X genres. As for SG Junior/Special in 2023, they are not that pricey now... Quality is much better than previous years (i mean all 2019+), hard cases, straps, multitools, factory PLEK plus setup, it's US made guitars with history, but in hands they are just really good instruments.
Well done JOHN! You truly gave that SG a work out, having it perform flawlessly! Love the growl of those P90’s when pushed. Great riff too….OUTSTANDING!👍 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

P90s on an SG are amazing! Gorgeous guitar!
Wow. Love that sound. I've been thinking some lately about my next guitar build and I'm leaning toward P90s. Thanks muchly for the demo.
looks sweet, I have an Epiphone Les Paul Junior with a P90, it's tone is delicious.
Real nice tone! Like the black on black also! P90’s are great pickups…
John you rocked that badboy out my young friend !!!. Love p90's on an SG.... superb demo . you are an awesome guitarist... love your channel...
Scored a Sparkling Burgundy from CME for $1250 as "Good" condition. When this baby arrived, the scratches were miniscule and cleaned up with Lizard Spit fine scratch remover. Set up was on point, but put on new strings and it plays like a dream, intonation is near perfect, stays in tune, and NO NECK DIVE! Heluva buy, so I guess if sucks lately as stated by another commenter, I got goddam lucky 😄. But I own three other Gibsons and sold another two with no QC or tuning issues. I guess I'm super Fn lucky 😁
I have a real 63 sg with p 90s, it’s been played to death & sits in a case in the closet for the last 30 years, fingerboard & frets are completely worn down. One of these days i’ll get it restored when i hit the powerball!
Love my gloss ebony SG Standard (2019), but the fingerprints are just so persistent. Awesome axe. Great vid, guys.
I own a few Gibson SG's and one of my favorites is the one year only SG Standard T P-90 with the thin 60's neck.

I have a lefty Gibson SG Special in Pelham Blue and second your opinion that it is a great guitar. Would be interesting if you reviewed the 24 fret Gibson SG Modern to compare it to the Standard and Special SGs, and the Les Paul Modern, that you have already reviewed.
It sounds fantastic. What amp were you playing through? Great overview and demo!!
Great video and great heartfelt playing; thank you. It would be nice to know a little more about the bridge. Are there any intonation issues? It doesn't sound like, but I'm curious.

I have one in Pelham Blue and I highly recommend it !!! Nice review man !!!
My first real guitar was a strat when I was 16 then I got my hands on a Les Paul then I entered the world of the SG stayed there for a long time recently I've fallen in love with telecasters but there's something awesome about an SG with p90s
This is a great SG, very close to a vintage SG Special. I have what I need but this guitar is very attractive. Black SG is very sexy . A 5 ply wide bevel pickguard, a good setup and it' s perfect.
Hey, tasty licks on that jam man. This model and color sg is my favorite. Nice review.
The Gibson Iommi SG has a big chunky neck, you won’t find that feature on any other USA SG except for the much more expensive custom shop stuff.
42K!!! Can't wait to get my new green Les Paul!😜 Killer SG. P-90's sound so good.
I picked up a new 22’ husk of one of these via Stratosphere so I purchased all the stuff I’d want in one 🤙 I loaded this baby with Antiquity P90’s, the Revolution Kluson locking tuners, Faber compensated bridge with locking studs and I also installed a Vitamin Q capacitor harness. Mine comes in at 5.6 pounds fully assembled and it’s an incredible axe, love it. I also have a Les Paul Special which was purchased brand new via Sweetwater which feels great too however I wish I would’ve went the same way with that one as I did my SG with far better hardware. Cool review man…. I never realized the SG’s had long neck tenons ahah! Always cool to learn something new! Thanks 🤙

@@davidhamelin4164 I didn't change the bridge. As I mentioned I had picked this Special up as a husk from Sratosphere. Great review that bought heritage cherry yesterday thankfully no issues for a change thank you Steve Manchester UK
Sic playing on a awesome guitar. Good job
I need to convert one of my guitars to p90s, Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P-90 will fit in standard humbucker routes, most of my Epiphones have Probucker 2 & 3s, so it would be nice to have a little variety. I have a Prophecy SG but it is active which is an entirely different way to go, but not as easy to retrofit a newer guitar not routed for active.
You gather gear technical specs with musicality on playing the instruments in a very balanced way... I use to follow trogly's guitar show wich is cool too but I suffer when that guy grabbs the guitar to play😢... Good job man!! I will be a subscriber.
Hey man, love your work! Question though, are the pickups muddy at all or fairly clean sounding? I had an Epiphone Special and the P90s were too muddy for my taste...
It definitely sounds better than the (HB-equipped) SG Standard
In the mid 70s I bought a 63 SG custom for $450…I traded it for a 66 Ford van…I regret that to this day!
Just bought one of these. 2020 build date in cherry red
Robbie Krieger loved it

That is a beautiful guitar.
Just got mine the warpround bridge was tilted I purchased locking bolts from Magic city bridge that’s the only thing that worked to get this guitar close to being in tune , intonation is close but not spot on , might change the bridge , you would think that Gibson would use locking bolts so the bridge wouldn’t tilt up and cause a sitar sound !!!!
After recently becoming a Greta Van Fleet fan, I hope to own a SG one day. And yet the one Jake plays is a 63LesPaul before the SG.

If you are chasing the sound only - go Epi; but if you want luxury and feel and quality AND sound and are actually playing outside of your room once in a while, go Gibson. Both are valid for different purposes. It's a matter of a few less pizzas at a restaurant , big deal. Rosewood v Indian Laurel? Nashville v Guangdong? 2 no brainers right there. I have both (got Iommi SG and Epi Explorer and more) and there is no comparison as far as feel; but as far as multitracking you won't know what the heck I'm playing so it's all in what your needs and prefs are. All I know is I'm shocked how much I like the fat not typical SG Iommi neck what with my smaller (70 yr old) mitts but if it's the Plek job, MAN is it worth it cuz it's FAST. My 2¢ 🎸

I have on mine. The intonation improvement is noticeable. Dare I say, it’s a different guitar. I will say, there is a distinct, vintage, jangly charm the guitar loses when you swap for a bridge you can intonate. If this is your main guitar, I would swap for something you can intonate. I've been looking for something with P90's for about a year now. I've never owned a Yamaha (quick note, I'll be 71 soon and I've owned a LOT of guitars!) and I thought the new RevStar Std w/P90's would be perfect. But after all the $$ Yamaha spent on advertising it's still not available, and nobody can tell me why!?! Anyway, the LP Special, and this SG special would work too. But, I'm also a 'big neck' guy, no 'slim taper' for me. After a long hunt, I learned there are several ways to get a fat neck SG. Musicians Friend apparently has the rights to Team built CS ones from Gibson. ~$4400. Then actual CS ones, Wildwood has them for ~$5000. Then the Tony Iommi, I haven't seen official spec's, but a couple reviews said his neck was 'chunky', at ~$2300? So no P90's yet and the jury is still out. Maybe you guys could look into the RevStar thing? If you do it will probably show up, you know, that Murphy's law thing. LOLOL Thanks much!! 8) --gary
