P38 Pistol (Walther, Mauser, Spreewerk) Overview
In this video we discuss the differences between the P38 pistols made by the 3 manufacturers during WWII (Mauser, Walther and Spreewerk). This is a part 1 video. Part 2 will be a shooting demonstration.

Several years ago my brother gave me a P-38 AC 41. A beautiful firearm, but there were some issues with the trigger. I recently took it to a gunsmith for a look over. Turns out that it just needed a thorough cleaning and spring adjustment. He said it was a pleasure to work on such a fine weapon, and noted the tolerances and attention to detail the Germans took on a wartime mass produced firearm.

Who knew your supposed to clean guns. Gun cleaning kits are just collector items for looks in your gun room
Great video - lovely to see the old warhorses all together Spreewerk also made a rifles for the volksturm very late in the war.
I own one with tiny German eagle stamps. Just had the trigger spring replaced. Love it! Dad brought it home with permission (documented) from the war. Great review BTW.
Excellent video...just inherited a Walther P38 according to your info. All numbers match.
What an excellent video and comprehensive analysis. My father left me two P38's and I'm going to watch this video and see if the two guns are matching and such that you pointed out. Thank you!
Great video. Thanks for posting. I have a 1944 Walther (ac) P38 with all matching numbers. Still shoots very well (I only use 115 grain ball ammo in her). Very light trigger pull in single action mode. And pretty accurate as well. Love this pistol. I also like the fact that it ejects to the left, versus how most, if not all, modern semi auto pistols eject to the right. Nice to get some history on the various manufacturers and history of the development of it, too. Cheers!
I see this is a year old... excellent video!! I just got a 1942 P38 Walther... no import markings all matching even the magazine.... your video helped out a lot. Thanks again...
I love P-38's; I have a small harem of them, and this pistol is my go-to-war gun. Note: the extractor on the top of the Luger also acted as a loaded-chamber indicator. Thanks for a great video. Be safe, be strong. --Old Guy
Very good video! I have owned a P1 for a few years now. A very excellent 6/64 model. Like new. Finally able to obtain a byf 43 with reddish brown grips, all matching #'s and no import stamps in beautiful condition. I wish I had seen this video before the purchase, as I had my choice between a Walther manufactured one, or this one. They were both in beautiful condition, but I was drawn to the grip colour, as the ac model had black grips, which was the same as my P1. He may still eventually sell the other, but I also have my eye on another piece from his collection. A Browning High Power, Nazi marked, in also, very beautiful condition. I almost had the hard shell holster for $80.00, but then he changed his mind and decided to keep it for his other P38. This was very informative, and having all three manufacturer's models on the table, plus a Luger was great to see. Thank You Marksman TV!

Thanks for the comment! If you can talk him out of the AC P38 and the Hi-Power and the price is right - do it! They are only going up in value and they are such classic firearms. The P38 is my favorite WW2 sidearm - very interesting firearms. Congrats on snagging the Mauser P38, you will enjoy it :)

The gentleman I bought the P38 from had about 10 rifles laid out in his living room up for sale. My Son-In Law and I asked how much he wanted, and paid what he wanted. The P38 was $350.00. I can tell you that among the firearms we brought home, were a 1945 Ljungman AG42B, 1954 M1 Garand, an SVT 38, a M1941 Johnson, and others. Chinese Mauser, M95 Steyr, and finally a M91/30. We hope he will part with his M40 Lahti as well. The fellow had collected over 400 firearms over many years, and was not so interested anymore in the military side. His new interest is in long range shooting. He says it will involve $10.000 worth of rifle, scope, etc. etc. I can say that the price we paid so far, is about what you would pay for "ONE' nice 1941 Johnson or "ONE" SVT 38. Thanks for getting back to me. I just started watching your video on M1 V.S. Enfield, etc. Looking forward to more. Thanks again!

As a Walther fanbeast, this is hardcore gunporn.
I have 2 P-38s in my collection. A Walther manufactured in 1941 and a Spreewerk manufactured in 1945. Both have all matching numbers. As one might figure, the difference in quality finish is very evident. The Walther immaculate and the Spreewerk obvious faint machine marks and other slight imperfections from manufacture. Both function flawlessly and accuracy is very similar.
Excellent explanation or the model. One of the very best I have seen.
Thank you very much for the accurate info, I am collecting the pistols of WW2 and the cold war, this was helpful on the P-38 side.

guy has great knowledge of firearms and explanation is very scientific and easy to understand,i enjoyed the video and learned about walther ,luger and other makes
Excellent video, thx. I own a bring back AC, 42, 359 all matching.
Very good video, my p.38 has an AC and a 43. I thought it was a spreewerk, im pretty stoked its a walther. It has all matching numbers and i bought it for $750. The bore is pitted but the rifling is good.
Thank you for taking the time to create such a wonderful , informative video. I learned more in that 19 minutes then I did researching for the last 2 weeks. Currently looking for an all stamped matching 42 byf to go with my 42 byf K98 Mauser. Too bad the 42's are the hardest to find and the most expensive of the Mauser produced. Thanks again.

The Preserve Very good video. I have a excellent condition 43 Mauser with the reddish grip handles. A very good shooter. I have found that the front sight is not accurate and too high. I put white fingernail polish on my front sight half way up, and when sighted even up to the top of the white nail polish the firearm is on target.
great video & very informative, thanks.
2 days ago I picked up a P38 ac42 and its all matching with the exception of the magazines and about 90+ condition and came with the holster, I'm not sure on keeping it since I got offered twice of what It cost me, but I always wanted one, so I will have to mull it over for a week or so, but really like to try it also first. Great video by the way. thx greg
Wow good video. Thank you very much. I'm picking up a spreewerks very soon.
Thank you for this very informative video. I just recently acquired a p38. It has a Walther stamp on it so I am believing that it is a later model, not WWII Still super sweet pistol
Interesting and informative!
Very good and informative video.
My Walter p-38 shoots no less reliably than my 92fs. I love that gun. I love that shirt two. Might need one for my Yugo
*A GREAT COLLECTION, THANKS FOR SHARING!! ;-)*
Great Video! BTW - What's the rationale in design for the P38 to eject shells to the left instead of the right?
Well Done! Thanks!
Very informative!
Fantastic!!
Great info thanks!
Great info!
Love your vlogs
Excellent video, like your presentation, informative. I have an all matching no. WW2 Walther P38 which brought back by my father. It is in a gun holster of a puzzling design . Has no belt loops. We can not figure how the gun was carried. Any ideas??? (Has BUND on the back)thanks good job
Very good video .....
The Luger also have a loaded chamber indicator. At the top on the extractor, just on top of the firing pin... it says "Geladen" (loaded).
Great video! Just a side note, the Remington Rand 1911A1 wasn't considered a cheaper made pistol. Quite to the contrary, they were widely considered one of the better manufacturers when it came to quality. The only problem with it is that it didn't have the name recognition that Colt has so long benefited from. Again, a very informative video! I'm now better educated on the P38.

Indeed; wasn't Remington Rand the first manufacturer to implement the improved heat treating measures?
Wow great job 👏 thank you
i have one that was brought back from the war by a friends dad, it has a different number on the barrel and research i found said that it was not uncommon because when the guns went back to the factory for work a different part could have been installed. mine has a 4500's serial number with cyq and lots of markings on both sides, with an a stamped on it and 1944
I have 1944 BYF and still is in a great condition. At first, I wanted reddish-brown grips, but now I like the black grips more.

Nice video on the 3 types, where can I find a serial number list to find where mine was made and year. Thanks
I have both pistoles and I prefer the p08 luger. beautiful weapon.
Nice video
Nicely put presentation! I especially liked that «бля» in the middle of the video! :)
The P08 Luger is the most beautiful pistol ever made. The P38 is certainly the better pistol and is also quite beautiful. I would love to both. Maybe one day when my finances are a little better. Shame the gun shop I dealt with closed their doors. Wasn't expecting that and they had several of each.
Do you know anything about the Walther p4 is the info still the same
Thank you for that excellent review. I have a bring back -my father, P38 AC 42 matching numbers. It is in very good condition with an excellent hard holster. What do you estimate the value? Thanks.
@MarksmanTV
7 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching! If it is in 90-95% condition or better, all matching and with no import marks and holster is in excellent condition, I would estimate around $1000 - $1200. Thanks again!
Before you named them (and I am not knowledgeable about P-38's) I thought to myself the one that was on the lower right looked the best, then you named it as the Walther!
@MarksmanTV

They were definitely of the highest quality P38's. Thanks for watching!
GXY means your holster was manufactured by Gebrüder Klinge in Dresden, GE. CXB was manufactured by Josef Moll, Lederwarenfabrik, Goch, Rheinland.
GXY is Gebr. Klinge found on p38 holsters
If the pistol is in better shape than a bring back but has import marks does it really lower the value that much?
Markman TV, you still online? I have a 1943 Mauser, all matching S/N's. W/ hardshell case. Do you know where I can buy a complete spring replacement kit? (Recoil and firing pin springs). Does anyone still make or have these kits? Also, what does the letter L mean next to the eagle symbol?
Thanks Chris ❤️it
I have a Walther P-38 ac40 all matching numbers including clip and grips.

CYQ is ultra reliable lot of use them in shooting club . .....Walther...its relatively rare .... BYF....I SEE a great number with a cracked slide.....
I call this the megaton gun 👍🤛
I have an SVW45 e series Mauser two tone. Very late war never shot. Was told it was worth between $1800.-2200.00
So I have cyq in a holster for a walther
I have a 1943 Mauser version of the P38. Dad was in WWII and this was actually given to him by a German soldier years after the war. I inherited it when Dad dies in 84

No mention of the BYF code being changed to SVW in early 1945.
mauser or walther and why?
What does it mean when you have a 4 point star stamp on the brake down lever, and an ‘N’’ stamp with a German eagle on 3 different parts of the pistol/?

@@johnklatt3522 yes it looks like a compass. Okay cool so probably after 1942, I was just wondering because it doesn't look old at all it's brand new looking, and I've only put about 25 rounds down range with it. Trying to keep it from too much wear and tare
1 million P38 made. I am curious how many have survived till today? Hundreds of thousands maybe?
You mentioned the Beretta 92 - that pistol is actually based on the P38.
Super pistoal
have a 1961 p38 walther. value
It’s megaton.
Great Vid! Not to argue, but my research said the Mauser was the best, followed by Walther, then Spreewerk.

Isn't there anyone who know why the best version was Mauser, Walther and then Spreework? I can tell you why, in the beginning it was Mauser. A well known weaponproducer. Later in the war followed by Walther. Spreework was an 3rd party, while the German adults were fighting on the fronts in Europe and Poland/Eastern front, the production was established by civilians from The Netherlands. A kind of a labour camp, forced to work in the Spreework factory in Spandau, where they produced ammunition, Flak missiles, the P38 and V2 rockets. Therefor the quality was poor, there weren't good crafsmanship/metalworkers, no good metals and time. Recently we found out that my granddad was laboured into Germany during the war. From 1942-1945 in bad conditions, they need to produce as many if they could to win the war.
How much p 38
Whatever happened to the part 2 groupings/shooting video? Thanks for this overview though. Convinced me to walk away from a Spreewerk P38. All matching but woof... those machine marks concerned me. Think I'll just wait for a nicer Walther or Mauser P38 in the future.
I inherited a P-38 that my father relieved a German officer of in WWII. It will only shoot in single action for some reason. I can’t for the life of me figure out why it won’t fire in double action?
Erfurt. You pronounced it right, though the peoplke living thre really pronounce it different. :)
My AC 45 359 p38 won’t come apart and I did all the steps, any ideas

Pull slide back to lock. Make sure the mag is out of the gun. Turn the takedown lever on the left side of the frame down and around until it stops (should be at about the 7 or 8 o'clock position. Then release the slide, gently ease it forward. Once the slide and the frame are alined, drop the hammer. Then the slide should come off the frame. If you have problems, please let me know where in this procedure. G'luck!

John Klatt This ist not Mauser, no..any P 38 is Walther only..
The P-38 has always been my favorite pistol...not because of nazi shit but because (for all the reasons stated in this video, I won't go over them again) it was ahead of it's time. I own a Spreewerk P-38 that was taken off a young German officer who surrendered during the Battle of Berlin. You can literally see the machine marks on the barrel. I've never fired it...I view it as more of a historical artifact than a pistol you take to the range. I have a P-1 for that =D

You might want to mention that these three P-38 pistols were make by starving Polish slave laborers, which might explain the lower quality of wartime P-38 compared to those made before and after.
