P0087 Troubleshooting - Diesel Insights

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How do you troubleshoot a P0087 (reduced fuel rail pressure) code? It can be difficult to pin down the cause when it only happens at certain times. In fact, if the code comes up when the truck is operating with a heavy load, it can be nearly impossible to duplicate the issue. That's why a dyno is the best diagnostic tool because you can run the truck at the necessary speed and load.

When our 5500 lbz had this problem it was because the lift pump had failed. Not sure if that’s stock on the top kick/kodiaks because we bought the truck used, but it did have a lift pump and it wasn’t working. With a new lift pump we haven’t had the problem since

theres a way to turn down the injector pulse to eliminate the issue and band aid the limp problem, kennedy has a tune for it, but i have efi live on a laptop, theres a video floating around here on how to do it.. my truck idles cold at 39% ipr, so it has some issues, want to try tuning first, why not, it runs absolutely perfect otherwise...

We had three of these trucks with the lbzs in them 2006 at 65000 miles they all started d raiting while pulling out 12000 lbs campers on long hills if we force the transmission to shift down quicker it will pull the hills just fine we have lift pumps replaced the relief plug is this bad injectors

I have a 2006 Lbz and the code only throws for me after about 10 minutes of driving over 75mph unloaded but it only happens once in a while now during winter during the summer it happened more frequently I do have a lift pump and a new cp3 could this be a sign of injectors or clogged pick up tube in fuel tank or what else I know that someone replaced the soft fuel lines the go from the fuel filter to the cp3 I need to order some factory lines because those are slightly kinked where they’re at I don’t know what to approach next my fuel line next to trans and after fuel tank aren’t linked or closed shut

Hi i have 2 of these 2009 lmm trucks and have had this low fuel rail pressure syptoms. It seems these trucks can have this issue even with low mileage.Wat determines rather your cp3 is just weak are the injectors? Are they usually bad all at the same time?

  • @Duramaxtuner

If the fuel delivery issue has been trouble shot to the high side of the system, it’s really a matter of finding what is returning fuel (return rate specs exist for the relief, pump and injectors). If the injector return rates are high then it’s the injectors that are in need of replacement. If not, then it’s likely the CP3 will solve the problem.

Isn’t fuel being that hot something to be concerned with or is 200 degrees ok for these trucks? I thought after 180 diesel fuel starts to boil off and vaporize…Been having a issue with the 06 LBZ throwing P0087 only while towing up a hill for 4 years. I replace the CP3 because I was told it was weak. We just got back from a trip and it tripped the code only once. Normally I’d have to limp it home, so that’s improvement. Now I’ve replaced the injectors with reman injectors along with some rubber fuel lines so hopefully it will fix this issue. I’ve done the FPRV solid plug, ported fuel rail fitting, added a lift pump, replaced the cp3, and now injectors. The truck seems to be quieter and runs a lot smoother so I’m looking forward to towing with it and seeing what happens. Only thing I noticed is it still blows black smoke at WOT, but my boost is 23psi which great. I have no tuner it’s a stock truck. I don’t run my truck hard so it may just need to be blown out good. I’m hooking up to my camper this evening to bring it home from repairs so I’ll update…

Update: Truck ran really well. Gave her hell going up pretty steep hills and she kept rail pressure, 23psi boost, engine temps stay around 198-214, trans was around 195-200, fuel stayed around 145-150, absolutely no black smoke 😁. She pulled the best she has since I’ve owned her. Only thing I have notice with this truck, and I thought it was caused by the injectors, is when my camper is Hooke up, which is a 5th wheel roughly 12k, pulling a hill I can have the pedal to the floor and I expect it to hit a gear and just tank up a hill but she doesn’t it’s just like the pedal is dead and she wants no more onions. I just figured out how to get what gear I’m in on my edge so next pull I’ll see what gear she’s in when she does it. It’s like she doesn’t want to go into 6th gear or maybe it’s in 6th and that’s all she’s got i don’t know. But for a 3500 and only 12k on the rear I would think she would yank it up a hill no issues. This part worries me about going up the mountains. I do use tow/ haul mode so not sure if that has something to do with it. But as of right now I think the injectors have done the trick. We want know for sure till we take another long trip. I think the next step is to get her properly and safely tuned.

I know this may be off topic...but i just purchased a 2017 2500 HD Chevrolet. (few months ago) and just purchased a S & B cold air intake. I know after installation I will need to tune the truck. Which tuner should i buy....I am not a mechanic but do understand basic stuff. Its just that there are so many????? Any info would help. I have done no other modifications at this time, but am looking at exhaust and when available EGR removal(after warranty) I do mostly highway driving with this truck at high speeds.

Your 2017 has an L5P engine, which at this point in time (December 2017) is not tuneable. Installing a cold air intake does not require special tuning - it's just improving the flow of air into the truck. This channel is owned by Duramaxtuner.COM - the leading North American developer of EMISSIONS EQUIPPED calibrations for common rail diesel engines. I'm fairly certain you'll need a tune once you start deleting your emissions equipment - and as written before - the L5P is not tunable - so we would advise caution. Finally - the L5P actually behaves like a tuned LML (2011 - 2016), according to our testing. If you have any questions - give us a call 815-568-7920

I have a question. My 160k mile LBZ gets a 0087 code but only during a 1/4 mile pass on my max effort tune and only when I lift off the pedal at the end of the pass. No issues on other tunes or in day to day driving. It doesn’t do it every pass maybe once every 5-6 passes. Has a PPE race plug. Ever have similar complaints?

I have a question regarding this code. I have an 06 LBZ that is going into limp mode on hot days pulling a 10k lbs camper. I’m throwing a P0087 code like you say. However, I’m throwing 4 other codes. P0299, P0128, P003 and P2563. No one ever mentions other codes. Is my P0087 causing the other codes by default or are these other codes causing the P0087? Every forum and video is strictly regarding the P0087. Really looking for some clarity.

My 08 throws the code during normal driving conditions, light throttle, no towing. Puts me in limp mode and has even shut off. Only thing I’ve noticed is it happens when my lift pump isn’t on, sometimes it’s intermittent. Truck gets chuggy, change fuel filter light comes on, followed not too long after by reduced power mode. Any thoughts?

My issue is that my symptoms are EXACTLY like his. Normal driving is a non-issue. But, carry a 5000lb camper in the hot summer...Bam. But my balance rates look great, all under 1.5-1.7 at idea. Most tighter then that, less than 1. Thanks and love your video!

Joshua Respecki they aren't exactly the same. Bosch offers hardened parts that some oems r to cheap to use. Also calibration makes a big difference in durability. Dmax likes to be happy with using max rail pressure much more often than Cummins. Higher pressure is higher wear. Can't change physics. U can change your gender(or so some idiots say) but not physics. Glad I am an engineer and not biologist lol.
